  1. "That got really annoying" petty-bourgeoisie privilege alert.
  2. Add it to the list of reasons for why we needed a Communist Revolution.
  3. You CANNOT talk about World War I and not consider the spectre of global communism revolution. Europe was on fire and the Left was a scary possibility to Europe's capitalist elite and their politicians. See, in particular: Ireland, Russia, labour unrest in the UK, and Germany. The concomitant rise of communism and its watered down forms in conjunction with capitalist-nationalism is a narrative that need be told to offer non-teleological alternatives to the carnage, exploitation, and death wrought by imperial-capitalist competition.
  4. Hey all, saying hello from the History forum and politely asking for some help So, could one of you lovely people provide me with a strong reading list for surrealism? Broad, yes. But I would appreciate the help and would like to get some good advice on both broad, general intros as well as specific monographs/works that are more complex (please and thank you). Cheers!
  5. Great point. Listen to this advice. You really should accept UCLA's offer.
  6. Statement of purpose, without a doubt, could have been better for me. They were all slightly vague, perhaps reflecting my lack of sureness in a dissertation topic, but where I was most specific, confident and well-read, I was accepted. Where I was kinda-sorta interested in maybe this, I was not.
  7. Sweet! Similarly I am interested in the 17-18th centuries anglo-world and will be working with Owen Stanwood as well! I am more interested in a transatlantic look at the Irish during this era but am very much interested in colonial/revolutionary America as well. Cool
  8. I will be hiking in the Maine woods, reading some books here and there, practicing my French + Spanish, and preparing to move.
  9. No worries, friends! I'm sure if I stopped be lazy and looked more myself I could find plenty! I have to say, though, that War and Peace is a great read. Long as heck, to be sure, but truly fun
  10. What is the best way to find apartments in Boston? I am trying zillow, padmapper and craigslist (and the BC students webpage). Anything else???
  11. War and Peace - Tolstoy The State and Revolution- Lenin I'm looking for some suggestions, though, on medieval and ancient European histories. It's not my field, but I'm just curious on some good surveys. I best get some "fun" reading before beginning grad studies next Fall!
  12. Someone asked about UVA- I got my rejection soooo..... They probably like you more and have you somewhere in the trying to figure out where to place you in terms of a wait-list/admission/rejection still? Anyone hear from Upenn??? Or Upitt??
  13. If you know what you're interested in and you're ready to commit, go for it. I did, was fortunate enough to be accepted, and am very thankful I went for it.
  14. Heh. I hear ya. Experience?? Or UCSD??
  15. Wooo, officially rejected from Brown and UVA. Not unexpected, two very competitive schools. Plus, I am still fortunate to have been accepted into BC which, honestly, was my best fit anyways. Congrats to everyone with acceptances and for those without; your self worth is not tied to an admissions process.
  16. Don't know much about specifics, both schools are renowned though. Congrats! Though for the cities... I'd personally much prefer Dublin. London area = unreal expensive and wayyyy too urban for my taste. Dublin is also a tad expensive and urban but not nearly in the same stratosphere as London (have spent a little time in both). That said, both are world class cities and, in that regard, London would certainly have a never ending supply of things to do (if you ever find free time outside of academia!)
  17. Perused this a bit. It seems like Brighton and Allston are my best bets but I thought I'd ask away anyways: any thoughts for one attending BC next fall? Also to consider, my younger brother attends Bentley as an undergrad, we've considered living together. How's Newton? I also have a long-term partner I'll be living with who will be looking for employment. My personal budget is the funding from BC- $20,900/year, but obvs shared rent with my girlfriend and brother.
  18. Accepted with funding at BC! Very excited. Waiting on the rest but that was near the top of my list.
  19. I have narrowed my list: Brown, BC, UVA, UPenn, and UPitt. (I'm not fretting at all/content/am aware they're not that big of a deal but-150Q 165V 5.5W). Just finishing up my SOP and writing sample (a published piece). Looking to study early Atlantic World, capitalism/class "from below."
  20. I've scoured around a bit at SOP threads but couldn't find the answer to a somewhat specific question (also, I might have missed it...): Is it wise to reference the extant historiography in your SOP either directly or indirectly. I originally found myself falling into more of an historiographic essay than a directed SOP, I think I've mostly fixed that problem but still am unsure about this. To make the question clearer, I'll include two sentences similar, but not identical, to my SOP- "A desire to study the "Lower Sorts," or those who "Scraped By." "Which would likewise necessitate an understanding of the radical elements, that "Many-Headed Hydra." In quotation marks are references that would be obvious, though slightly indirect on my part, to major monographs in my subfield. Good idea? Bad idea? Thanks and i apologize if this is a redundant thread.
  21. A mix of MA and Ph. D programs for me: Unversity of Pennsylvania William and Mary Boston College Memorial University Dalhousie University University of Pittsburg University of Maine (just MA, my current school) I'm interested in the early modern period from a Marxist/class perspective- think Gary Nash or Marcus Rediker (
  22. Kleio, can I ask about your experience with Dal?? And I don't mean to pry about acceptance or not, but rather the process + working with the school
