U Southern California: Psychology Ph.D. Applicants

Hello, everyone!

I applied to the Social Psychology Ph.D. Program at U Southern California. I am getting restless now, and I am wondering if any of you have heard back about interviews or know anything about the fateful day on which we should refresh our e-mails every 5 minutes.

Best,

anxious applicant.

I don't know if anyone else got this, but I got an email saying "We have reviewed your application for admission to graduate study, and are unable to proceed because of important transcripts missing from your application file.". Probably because I hadn't sent it yet :(.

does this mean I might still have a chance, if it's not a rejection email? Could it mean that I even might get an interview possibly if they receive the documents?

I don't know :( With an application to a different school (NOT USC), I received an e-mail (from the grad portal, not the department itself) saying that they wanted another version of my transcripts (official instead of unofficial) scanned and uploaded. Their deadline was Dec 1st, and I uploaded a new one on the Dec 5th - I was still able to upload it. It didn't come with any messages about the likelihood of moving forward with my application review though.

If I was you, I would call the department. What's missing? Can you make a good case for why?

I've applied to the same program and haven't heard anything yet either, if that puts your mind at rest. I did see someone on the results page posting that they had a phone interview though. Don't know if you saw that? Apparently invites are being sent out next week!

Seeing that post on that results page made we want to begin this thread. It started worrying me that someone already has had an interview via phone.

I also got one of these emails a few weeks ago, I'm not sure if it indicates interest or if it was just a formality sort-of-thing for preliminary application filtering. Fingers crossed though!

I haven't heard anything back yet either. This weekend I made myself stop checking the application site to see if the status had made anymore changes. Sending good vibes to all of you other USC applicants, hopefully we hear soon!

I know we all like to overanalyze, but this is a bit much, no? I think it means you're missing a transcript and should probably send it. So...I hope you sent it...

Right, and I sent it. But they already had both transcripts on file, they just wanted the official version of one of them "before [they] could progress"; that typically implies some level of interest.

Possibly but it just seems a little vague to me. In my experiences, most communications are pretty upfront and avoid such vagaries when possible. There are substantial differences between programs in when they want your transcripts. Some want them to arrive before the application deadline. Some ask you to send them as soon as you submit your application. Some want them once they've processed the rest of your application. And some want them once you've been admitted.

So I'm not trying to be a downer here, I'd probably be just as privy to overinterpretation in this case (especially for an awesome program like USC :)). Just keep in mind these differences between programs. Best of luck, and hopefully you hear some good news soon!

Per the grad secretary, each admissions committee member sends out invites at their own pace. No way to know if you're in or out until you hear from someone. Guh.

ARGH agonising, but at least we can go on to live another day of hope for the time being!
