Monadology Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 So everytime I get the buzz on my phone that an email comes in I race to check it- and it's nothing but a damn piece of junk- examples of my disappointment: is this a decision? no, but an isaac's sandwich is 10% off. Is THIS a decision?? No, but I can sign a petition to save the north american quail. Is this a decision? No, but if I buy $200 worth of aveda hair products, I get free shipping. Just thought I'd vent a bit. LOL! Not sure if this is feasible for you, but I used an email filter (I think for the word "admission") and set a special notification for emails arriving through that filter. That made it a lot easier on my heart! Ulixes, Edit_Undo, Nastasya_Filippovna and 2 others 5

Edit_Undo Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 (edited) ok I am totally going to have to figure out how to do that! I have just figured out how to do it (for Gmail). I have created a filter in gmail that says 'if the email has the word 'admission', then move email to label 'admission'.' It is very easy to create the filter. I've created a filter for each relevant word such as 'decision,' 'graduate,' etc., and they all move to the same label. Now, on your phone (assuming android), go to Gmail => settings => choose your account => manage labels => 'admission' [or whatever you called the label], set it to receive email and choose a unique message tone. Edit: I have just received an email with that unique sound. My heart fell to the ground. It was just a reply to a question I had for some school though. I have to warn you, hearing the unique sound is frightening as fuck! Edited January 26, 2015 by Edit_Undo NathanKellen, a_for_aporia, Monadology and 1 other 4

isostheneia Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Given my impatience for results and general level of anxiety, this forum is far too quiet for my taste. I can only reread the same admissions advice blogs so many times before I go insane. (It's going to be a long month or two.) What's everyone up to?

BU had two days off for the city to clear the streets and such. As such, I've been going stir-crazy (I have a really hard time working from home). However, I did read some good stuff in between refreshing the forum page and the results page. isostheneia 1

Here in Chicago we were spared that snow storm (we only got a dusting). Still waiting for that email from Northwestern to show up in my inbox.... isostheneia 1
overoverover Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) I should also add that I'm getting incredibly anxious, even though the earliest I'll hear from any school is next week (if UC Berkeley remains consistent). I'd really, really like to get in to UC Berkeley (after this blizzard, California seems so warm and inviting). Edited January 29, 2015 by overoverover

overoverover Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Looks like you have three shots at Cali, and the rest are cold. Just like you should never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach, I suppose you should never form preferences about graduate schools during a blizzard! Monadology 1
isostheneia Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Looks like you have three shots at Cali, and the rest are cold. Come to think of it, I really should have applied to more warm-weather schools... Looks like University of Tijuana needs a philosophy department. If they just hire an adjunct or two and fund me, I'm so there. Nastasya_Filippovna and B. Blumenstrauss 2
Cecinestpasunphilosophe Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 As a Canadian, I think you all need to suck it up I've been trying to keep myself as busy as possible with coursework... but that still hasn't prevented me from refreshing the forum and the results page every hour or so. I got a couple emails from UChicago today, which nearly gave me a heart attack. Apparently, there was a glitch in their system that made them accidentally send out requests for GRE score transcripts, and then they had to send out another email explaining the glitch. My poor heart. a_for_aporia 1

I once looked up the the University of Hawaii's philosophy department for this very reason while choosing schools to apply to. Never have I more regretted choosing to not focus in Chinese/Hindu philosophy. (http://hawaii.edu/phil/ for anyone who wants to imagine what life would be like earning a Ph.D. in Hawaii...) reixis Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I'm on summer vacations (which means free 24/7). I've been busy mostly with a few pieces of philosophy and watching sitcoms. When I'm inspired, I write some drafts of what might become future papers. I am also working on a Peirce's paper (about the use of diagrammatic reasoning to aid scientific discovery) with my former advisor. On the more relaxed side, I enjoy playing videogames when I don't have anything else to do. I've spent quite a lot of time on Diablo 3. As someone from a tropical wheather country, I must say that I envy you guys. In summer times, air conditioners are sine qua non conditions to even think about reading/doing philosophy!

I was in Brasil last summer, it is an amazing country to live in. anyway. I am reading philosophical gourmet over and over again :/ (I already memorized almost everything on this site). and sometimes I read the tweets of some profs. today I began to study Greek after a long time (I study on Aristotle's "On the Soul" )

That's fantastic you are keeping so busy reixis! It's truly the only way to stay sane! Unfortunately, one bad habit I have run into is the discovery of the app Crossy Road on my phone- it is basically a game designed for 10 year olds and I am becoming a little obsessed with it! Other than that, reading, work, and I'm just beginning to audit a course on Wittgenstein and I'm super excited about that! reixis 1

Where have you been? I think that it depends on where you live and on your monthly income, but the South and Southeast regions are pretty reasonable (I live in a mid-sized town in the South), though violence is a concern pretty much everywhere. I don't hate the climate here, but I think a few more colder weeks would be welcome! Haha Edited January 29, 2015 by reixis

YoungFoucault Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 It seems as though tomorrow might begin the first initial major influx of acceptances so cheers to a night of anxiety ridden insomnia! a_for_aporia 1

sidevans Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I wanted to let people here know about something I wrote on my blog last week: I have reason to believe that UChicago is finalizing their admissions decisions tonight, and will likely release acceptances tomorrow via email. This is a week earlier than I originally predicted. Of course, if they don't release acceptances tomorrow, they likely will not release until next Friday, since they have released on a Friday each of the past three years. Also worth noting is that UChicago does not have a wait list, so it's one round of acceptances and then nothing more for the rest of the admissions season. a_for_aporia, NathanKellen, reixis and 2 others 5
kosmo Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I just got my first result - a rejection from Northwestern. Can't expect to not receive rejections, having applied to so many schools, but still, it's very disheartening to start off the season with a reject...
