  1. I would say that the process did go better than I expected, because I am a worst-case scenario person and expected the worse. I applied to a very large variety of schools but I was worried that I would not be accepted to any, even the "safety" schools. I believe that what kept me out of most programs was, probably even more than my sub-par math gre, my undergrad institution, which is unknown and not prestigious in the slightest regard. My professors to me from the beginning that it would be the biggest hurdle. I do wish I hadn't waisted as much money as I did applying to as many "long shots", but I felt that it was worth the try! I was so thrilled and surpised that I actually got accepted into USF, because of the unranked programs, it was a top choice, and the full funding was more than joyous!! I was frankly even honored to have been waitlisted at certain schools, and chosen for some MA programs at schools at which I applied for a PhD. I went into the process with very realistic expectations so I feel that the outcome was fantastic.
  2. Finally the brutal process is over! Rejected from Purdue and UW-Madison waitlist (btw anyone waitlisted at UW-Madison may want to confirm- I emailed them and was told that the admissions process has been closed for this season, they did not notify me!). I am attending University of South Florida and have a 5-years of funding! I am absolutely THRILLED!!!!!!!!
  3. Hooray!! I'm thrilled to hear this!! So farewell to Boston for you!!
  4. How fabulous to hear!!!! Congratulations!!!!!
  5. best of luck to you isothenia- I know that Pitt is certainly a dream school and your tension must be at peak! Everyone on these threads has been so supportive of each other and it will be so nice to see the tension and anxiety finally over for us all!
  6. what have you narrowed it down to?! Are you still waiting on any schools yourself?
  7. that's true! Ugh, today- I have become this blob just refreshing my email and the gradcafe!
  8. I know that I saw on the boards last year there were just a few acceptances off the waitlist AFTER the 15th- how is that permissible?
  9. I just wanted to say how truly awful I feel about what happened to you (and others) with the CU Boulder email. That had to be terrible. Thankfully you had the intuition that something was off, so that softened the blow, but it still had to be terrible.
  10. well I decided to email UW-Madison and was told the same- that I'm "still on the waitlist" - just like the other 1,000 of us waitlisted there! I just want this following week to be over with- I know this may be irrational but I feel guilty holding USF in suspense like this. I am going to be elated if I do end up going there!
  11. Do you think at this point it is appropriate to contact the schools we are waitlisted at and ask for an update? I contacted them initially (which for me was one month ago), but all I want to know at this point is if I am realistically in the running. I know I will probably receive an ambiguous answer, but I don't want to come off as a pest if I do contact them. Thoughts?
  12. This doesn't concern me personally but wow this in unreal! Any idea why? Is this perhaps because of some kind of upheaval in the department? It seems that it's a rather odd coincidence this many would happen to go on leave at one time.
  13. Officially declined Temple today, they were very gracious about it. So now it's just a matter of seeing whether or not UW-Madison or Purdue happen to offer me anything or not, and if they don't I'll be heading to USF! No matter what I'm very happy!
  14. oh wow that is so much tension! CUNY would be simply amazing to get into, and Miami would be incredible too- I can see why you are so tense! Thanks for the wishes, hoping for the best for you as well! I just hope these next two weeks go by as quick as they can so we can know our fate and start preparing for our paths!
  15. Well Purdue told me that my chances of being accepted off the waitlist was low, and I know that UW-Madison's waitlist is notoriously long, so I'm just not too hopeful at this point. But yes I am waiting until April 15th!
  16. I, like you twinkie eater (lol love the screen name), have been accepted to 2 unranked phd programs, both funded offers, and while I am waitlisted at more reputable schools, I don't see those prospects coming to fruition. Of the two programs, U. of South Florida is the one that has a better placement record and the program is a stunning fit for me interest-wise. I was accepted into great MA programs that I applied to in case I got shut out of all the PhD programs I applied to. Now your situation is of course most likely different than mine- I'm older and have less time to afford to my schooling if I want to have a shot at enjoying a career at this point (I'll be 34 in August), which is a major factor in why I'm not choosing an MA in order to better my chances at being accepted at a more prestigious program at a later point. The other factor is precisely what you mentioned in your post- I am perfectly content with the prospect of teaching philosophy at a small liberal arts college after receiving my PhD. The irony is that having come from an unknown, tiny liberal arts college is what I believe to have been a detrimental factor in my admissions process, but I truly did enjoy my undergraduate experience; the setting was intimate and there was a genuine camaraderie between the professors and students. I don't need prestige to factor into my professional legacy. I just want to teach philosophy and publish. I am hoping that we can accomplish such goals with such phd programs.
  17. is it one of the SPEP schools? Am I correct that many of those, while unranked on the Leiter Reports, are still good programs?
  18. unreal how different the approaches are at these various programs! 20 offers at UNC versus 5 offers at UW-Madison! In that case, does UNC have a tiny waitlist as opposed to Madison's enormous one? I know there was the decline at Madison early this week, but nobody has mentioned being accepted off the waitlist. Perhaps someone who doesn't post here has been offered the spot.
  19. my god that is awful! How are you feeling about BC? I know one of my letter writers always mentioned that he thought BC was an excellent program- I am unsure how deeply familiar he is with it, and I am pretty confident he doesn't know details such as it's attitude or support of women in the program, but what you say about Buffalo is truly disturbing to say the least.
  20. I wish I had some valuable input but I know nothing about LSE. I must ask though- do they actually teach metaphysics? I would, like others, say that UPenn would be the obvious first choice, and I honestly don't know how strong UConn is in ethics, but I would think that as far as metaphysics is concerned they would be a stellar choice. Their program appears to be growing in reputation too. And Establishment thank you- I too am very concerned about Temple's PR record as well.
  21. I'm glad this thread was started! I am wondering the same thing between USF and Temple. Is there really a distinction in reputation between these two PhD programs? I love the fact that USF has Manning- he appears to be practically a Donald Davidson scholar. They also have Lee Braver, who has the unique specialization of studying the continental/analytic divide and the topic of realism. Their phil of mind prof Levine has also written a lot on Kuhn who is a favorite of mine. Now Temple: Miriam Solomon- I talked with her - she is absolutely delightful (and someone I know has worked with her and loves her too) - she is a Quine expert, done extensive work in epistemology and feminist philosophy of science. In philosophy of mind they have Gerald Vision. I know they have one other person there, Philip Atkins, who specializes in epistemology and phil of language, but I don't know a thing about him. Both schools seem totally even on continental. I am so torn- as far as funding I have been guaranteed funding by both schools for a minimum of 4 years (details of how much in stipend to come over the next few weeks, but estimates appear to be about even). My interests are lphilosophy of mind, late 20th century analytic in philosophy of language and science (Davidson, Putnam and Quine are my favorites), epistemology, and 19th century continental philosophy. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
  22. So she said they are only accepting 5? Yikes that's not very encouraging for us who are waitlisted! I was hoping more like 10 so the odds would be greater!
  23. I certainly don't know the "rule of thumb" either; I wonder if it would be different for different departments. I hope Pitt works out for you! Which of your offers are you leaning towards? UCSD?
  24. We should start a Nietzsche addict group- Nietzschians Anonymous. Except we don't want to stop
