I saw some people were getting their rejections today so I went and checked- yup, I was one of them! Oh well- to be honest, the schools I've been accepted at and the ones I'm waitlisted at right now are better program fits because they are a nice hybrid of both analytic and continental. I'd never see Nietzsche again at UMD- they would be like Nietzsche WHO?
-
Waitlisted at UW-Milwaukee and declined it- hope this helps somebody out!!
-
I was told the same thing by UMD about their program- basically that they weren't done reviewing apps, but I wasn't yet on the waitlist and of course wasn't accepted yet. So I just put it on my rejection list unless something fabulous happens, then I will take it back off! I am wondering if, in regards to somebody's Columbia inquiries, perhaps they are now reviewing files for the MA? Just a guess.

I concur 100% with you! And in a way, I respect the fact that they are being a tad enigmatic at the moment- until things are more decisive, I'd rather not have my hopes too high. None of my AOIs involve ethics, which of course puts me at a disadvantage if the waitlist is divided (I'm phil mind and language, and to a lesser extent epistemology, and then 19th century continental). At this point I think we must all should do what my dad says- hope for the best and expect the worst! haha!
-
That's a good point Ian- I was told by my parents (and they had no idea, it was a sincere misconception, I think due to the fact that my parents are older than typical for my age), that it doesn't matter at all where you go to college- if you do spectacularly with your gpa and impress your profs, you can get in anywhere! I didn't even think about it until I was enrolled and began to research the realities of grad school and talk directly to my profs that whoaaa- not quite the reality!

lol, I decided to contact DGS yesterday after posting about speculation!! She basically said the same thing, she said it is a "roll of the dice"! Just so frustrating bec I would love to start beginning my solid plans- as we all would at this point. Are waitlists how the concept of purgatory was created?
-
Unless somebody has emailed the DGS and failed to mention it, I'm pretty sure it's all speculation.
-
I'm just curious, do you come from a highly reputable undergraduate institution? I think that does play a very large factor. I know my profs said that was what was going to hurt me the most in the admissions game. I have achieved acceptances to non-PGR ranked programs (USF, Temple and Wayne State)- were the programs you applied to ranked on the PGR at all? I know you said no top 10, but i mean even up to top 30 and so are extremely competitive.
-
I decided to contact the DGS directly at Purdue to find out more about their waitlist procedures, and while he told me they don't have a ranked waitlist (which was not what was told to someone else), he told me that I was unfortunately low on the waitlist, but not "very low". I know the other person said they were 26th- a waitlist of over 26, to me, is quite long, and I know that UW-Wisconsin has an extremely long waitlist. I guess I am unclear as to why certain programs have such excessively long waitlists; why don't they just waitlist about 10 and just call the others "honorable mentions" or something?
-
You know that's really lousy, I will have to email the DGS, it was the secretary who told me that. Not only that but that's also frustrating when in the meantime you have to spend more money ordering more transcripts. I wonder, why do these schools waitlist so many people? Do they usually have that many rejections?
-
I second that! I wish I knew what Purdue's history was for accepting off the waitlist- it would be nice just to have the odds. It's particularly frustrating when you know that not everyone receiving acceptances/waitlist spots are noting it on gradcafe. Oh the angst!!
-
You know I hope I wasn't' creepy today- I had to do the transcript thing for Purdue, and I emailed the secretary telling her that I had mailed my transcript requests so she could make a note they were on their way (the other day I had emailed her back from the waitlist email telling her I was happy to be on the waitlist and asked her one question about it). Those are the only two emails I sent (or plan to send), but I hope that wasn't overly creepy or obsessive to tell her I already sent out my transcript requests- I just wanted to emphasize my interest! I have no intention of emailing Purdue or UW-Madison for updates, I know they will contact me if they want me.

Ahhh Turretin what do you think? The first two you have spot-on. My first two picks, in that order, are 1- UW-Madison and then Purdue. As far as the other three, do you or does anybody else have any opinion on school reputation? I am beginning the placement research (i do have some info regarding Wayne State's Placement but the other two I have yet to investigate). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! My main AOIs are philosophy of mind and philosophy of language (particularly in respect to the work of Davidson, Quine and Putnam), epistemology. I also like a bit of continental- in truth I love Nietzsche and some Hegel, but my ultimate dissertation interests are in the former categories.

I just wrote USF because I hadn't heard from them, and apparently my acceptance email must have gotten lost somehow because I was accepted there! So now I have my options: Acceptances: USF, Wayne State, Temple Wait lists: UW-Madison, Purdue At this point I have no idea what odds are for the wait-lists or when I may hear back, and that adds so much stress! As far as the acceptances go, there are things that appeal to me about all the programs. I'll be visiting Wayne State in two weeks (trip got delayed), and I have more encouraging news about Temple after contacting some profs there who did get back to me and appear to be very knowledgeable in my AOIs. USF has a good program for me too. Right now I am just drained and overwhelmed!
-
Just got waitlisted at Purdue- does anybody know Purdue's waitlist history? Small or large? This is one of the programs I like a lot so I hope this is encouraging!
-
So I am assuming this point that I have been rejected by JHU- it is just frustrating though because I emailed the DGS on Monday and he hasn't responded and I know he responded to someone else that they were not accepted into the program. Why would he not even respond to my inquiry?
-
Oh wow well if it in fact did that would make me feel wonderful! I think they must be a class act there, because I just received the kindest email from Professor Pritchard acknowledging my decline and wishing me the best. Sounds like a stellar program and personable people!
-
I just declined a funded MA offer from Western Michigan. As a note- I've already written to decline all my MA offers so they can move down the lists since I know I have a foot in the door for the PhD- I want to keep those waitlists moving! On another note- I know there was somebody upset earlier on the posts about those not moving fast enough. That, I believe can be an unfair assumption. People need to make carefully informed decisions about these choices and deciding between PhD programs is a life-altering decision. There is a big difference between waiting to decline a PhD offer and rejecting these MAs because you have a PhD offer. It's excruciating because I want off the UW-Madison waitlist- but I GET it! Nobody should have to rush their decisions!
-
Don't feel bad at all- it's only about the biggest decision you will ever make!
-
Did anybody just see the post on the admissions results page about Columbia? I am in doubt as to whether the person actually received news from Columbia, or just wanted to express frustration. I didn't know if it was someone who posted here a lot or not?
-
oh god maybe this will clear out a lot of people off the acceptance and waitlist - do you think? I have no interest in ethics (as an area of specialization I mean LOL).
-
yes we NEED to get like 10 people to reject UW-Madison, like tell them Wisconsin has been hit with a sudden resurgence of the bubonic plague or something.
-
Got waitlisted at UW-Madison- oh god please I hope enough ppl turn down offers they have to accept me- this would be absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And ugh- I got a huge envelope from Boston College today- all to read that while I was not accepted into their PhD program, I was invited to their MA program. It was a compliment but I wish they hadn't sent it in a huge envelope. That was a real tease.
-
i have a question- I was accepted on Feb 11 to Temple's PhD program- I emailed the DGS back that night asking some important faculty questions and didn't hear back so a week later I emailed her, just asking if she got my email, saying I understood she was busy during admissions season but I was looking forward to her response. Still no response. So last week I emailed my POI (rumor has it he is retiring soon and of course my other POI as you all know, Margolis, is 90 so that's super bad), asking him about how long he planned to stay at the school given that he is my POI (not referencing the rumor of retirement), and no response from him either!! Do you think it's odd that I haven't heard from any of these people?!!!! I just think that the school that accepted you would be eager to communicate with you as these are the most important questions for making a decision. Wayne State has responded quickly to every question I have asked and provided detailed information. I just wanted some input.
-
accepted to Virginia Tech with a nice package and a very nice funding package, although at this point I'm leaning toward either the Wayne State or the Temple PhD offer. Still waiting on a lot of other schools though. And the NIU acceptance is just so weird- accepted but no actual email- why do you think they do it that way?
