Thought I'd say hi officially too. I'm a traditional undergrad interested in quantitative sociology especially applied to medical soc. Starting to bite my nails with the apps out, but good luck to you all!

Hi. Has anyone else seen the early U. of Chicago acceptance posted on the results page?

Must be exciting to have one acceptance in hand this early of the game. Congratulations to the poster! If you're reading this, I hope that you wouldn't mind sharing your stats and research interests.

Me: Submitted 9 apps out of 12 so far.

Er, the deadline for U Chicago was only 10 days ago, and the application page says their decisions are made early March. Whoever posted their acceptance must have been dreaming.

I'm 34, been out of school for 10 years. I'm currently working as a user experience researcher, so I have current research experience, but not academic. I have two undergrad degrees, one in Psychology and one in Humanities & Social Thought. Undergrad gpa: 3.4 (Psych gpa: 3.75). GREs: 701V/530Q/6.0writing. I was also on a research team as a psych undergrad, and presented at an APS conference back then, too.

I'm applying to both Social Work and Sociology programs. Sociology: Northwestern, Northeastern, and NYU.

Also Social Work at Michigan (Social Work + Psychology), University of Chicago, and University of Texas (Social Work and LBJ Public Policy).

My research interest is the experience of domestic violence abusers, and how to develop intervention and prevention protocols for them. On a broader scale, violence in general. It's a very specific interest, which I hope isn't a detriment to my apps! I really don't have a great sense of what my chances are (maybe nobody does), but worst case scenario, I have a job now, so...

I'm also a self defense instructor, which is part of where my interest in d.v. comes from.

Oh, and I'm Amy. Hi!

Hi everyone,

I'm also applying this year. I'm already done with my applications. I'm not applying to a lot of schools, since my husband is also a grad student and we are limited to the number schools in our area. My background is in engineering (undergrad) and theology (masters). My research interests are immigration, social/racial stratification, political/economic sociology and labor. I also have a secondary interest in sociology of religion. I'm only applying to three schools. One of those is Notre Dame.

Good luck to all of you!

Right, I guess I never posted here... I'm applying next season but am familiar with the processes. I'm an undergrad at the moment studying political science, philosophy, and history (majors) and english literature (minor). I'm newly interested in sociology as a field of study but have always really been interested in the subsections -- social stratification, historical and comparative sociology, primarily, and political sociology, the three of which I believe inform one another (necessarily) and cannot be separated. The approach I take is interdisciplinary (obviously) and informed by my background. I'll probably be geography restricted when I apply because I am seeking to study somewhere warm and near the east coast of the united states.

i have some publications (mostly in progress) on literature, rhetoric, medievalism... some talks given at conferences (talks on religion and literature which are probably more sociological in nature than either religious or literary). My primary interests at present are regarding power and oppression which is probably stratification by definition, and I am doing a study on this with a social psychologist which we hope to publish at the end of the year and perhaps speak at the APA conference this summer. i'm not sure if any of this helps with sociology, but I like it so there it is.

No GRE scores yet, GPA hovering around 3.7 and should finish around 3.75 (poor performances in a few courses early on but will finish the last 2 years with nothing below an A-). I'll probably throw some political theory applications in the mix as well.

Hi all!

I'm relatively new to the forum, applying to programs in the northeast to study social movements. it's such an isolating, terrifying process, it's nice to find a supportive space in all this! all my apps are in, except for one. my partner's also applying to grad programs in a different field. i applied a few seasons ago to 1 phd program, getting a phone interview & eventually a decline. hoping to improve my 100% rejection record.

and i'm awful at waiting!! i'm already starting to feel it, even though I know that there is NO WAY that i could hear back this early. i'm totally obsessing about what might happen. and daydreaming about getting that one admission letter/call.... (would i cry? would i call my partner, or wait to see her in person to tell her? where would i go out for drinks to celebrate?)

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forum for a while now but haven't posted yet. I'm already anxiously awaiting on the schools' responses! I applied to 10, very difficult schools in the US, so I'm hoping I'll at least get in somewhere. I'm an international student but have been in the US for just about 5 years now for undergrad and work experience.

Good luck everyone!

I just want to throw it out there that Purdue University is also a very solid place to study the sociology of religion. Fenggang Yang and Dan Olson are both great scholars who have developed impressive reputations in the field. They're also fairly young (both associate professors) and are committed to working with students. Purdue is supposed to hire another soc. of religion scholar at some point over the next two years to replace Jim Davidson. If you're interested in religion, I'd look into Purdue. The website is very informative and if you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me.

Notre Dame and Duke are also great soc. of religion schools that I haven't seen mentioned. Best of luck in the applications process.

I'll be at Purdue Fall 2010. I did not forget what you said in this post several months ago. Now that I have spent some time with Dan Olson, Fenggang Yang, Jill Suitor, several other professors, and the sociology of religion graduate students who have been at Purdue for various numbers of years, it is easy for me to understand your enthusiasm for the sociology of religion at Purdue.

Thank you
