So far I have been applying to three universities in Canada for the fall term 2015, and am anxiously waiting for an answer. Has anyone else applied to similar programs (aboriginal studies, first nation studies, ...)? Have you heard from any of the schools yet?

Just wondering what schools you applied too? I am applying for history programs, but considered maybe applying to the Indigenous Studies program at UVic, as that is another area of interest for me (first being modern German history).

Nice to meet you! I had not met anyone yet who applied to similar degrees so it`s great. I applied to UVic (it is my first choice), UBC Okanagan and the University of Northern British Columbia. I can`t wait to hear from the schools. I think you passed the admission deadline for UVic, but I think they also accept late applications sometimes. Where did you do your undergrad?

Sorry! I did NOT apply to the Indigenous Studies program, only considered it! However I did apply to UVic already but for an M.A. history program!

I did part of my undergrad in Kelowna at OC and then transferred to a school in Alberta. How about you?

I did my undergrad at OttawaU (Aboriginal Studies and Canadian Studies). How is Kelowna by the way? I haven`t been to British Columbia yet, so I am not sure which city would be best to live in between Prince Georges, Victoria or Kelowna.

I hope I get to see it one day :) Congratulations for your admission at UBC! Do you know if UBC Vancouver and Okanagan start giving admissions offers at the same time? I haven`t heard anything yet so I am a bit nervous... Not sure if good sign or bad sign.

I grew up on Vancouver Island and love it there, so I am really hoping for a UVic acceptance. I lived in Kelowna for two years and the city did not really win me over. It is a really pretty place but it is also very small and there is not much to do. The UBCO campus is really small too. I would rank those three cities as 1) Victoria hands down, 2) Kelowna, and 3) Prince George.

Good luck to you! I did a History MA at Trent, and if Trent's policy on US student loans hadn' changed (along with poorer funding for international students) I might have switched over to the Indigenous Studies PhD there. I almost wound up in Trent's Canadian/Indigenous MA, but History offered me slightly more money. I still took some of the same course I would have in either.

Thank you all for the answers!

Henry: I considered applying at Trent for a while too, but the tuition indeed seems to be very expensive there for international students. I might apply there for my PhD one day if I become permanent resident though.  How did you like Trent University? Do you have any tips on how to patiently wait for answers from schools?

Has anyone heard anything from UVic? I don't see much in the way of results posted. (I'm not indigenous studies, mind you.)

I applied to UVic for history, and have not heard anything yet. I only just heard from Guelph today by email, stating that final decisions would be made at the end of Feb and there is a lot of interest in my application. I don't think all schools are as considerate in providing updates. So I figure that a lot of programs will be making final decisions around the end of the month. Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations on being almost accepted at Guelph Kleio! Best of luck to you  :)

I have another question for you guys :) . My file has been accepted by the office of the director of graduate studies in one school, and my application now says my file was forwarded to the department. Does that mean I have good chances of getting in, or would it just mean I passed the minimum requirements but it does not necessarily mean I am in quite yet? I think I might start over thinking everything.

I wouldn't say its an almost acceptance just yet! I don't want to jinx my application! LOL. Also, my UVic application says "forwarded for review." Not sure where in the process that puts my application though. I found this link that kind of explains the process... Hope it helps!

Oh, helpful!

Yeah, my UVic one is "file forwarded to department". But, I have deadlines coming up for my acceptances and I am not holding out hope that I will hear back, given that there are basically no results since January on the Results Search page. Oh well.

Did it start off saying "forwarded for review" and then move to "file forwarded to department"? Just wondering since I'm checking my UVic page constantly!

Didn't see that stage, so you may be further along than I am? I have a friend who emailed the department asking about the timeline two days ago and has not gotten a response. I am assuming that they have a generally later timeline for offers?

In my case it started with forwarded for review, and then forwarded to the department. Thank you for the link Kleio! According to my supervisor at the research center I work for, several canadian universities are late this year because of the budget cuts, so it would be normal if we haven't received any answer so far.

Now I'm worried! Hopefully my UVic status moves to "forwarded to the department" soon!

Sorry! I didn't mean to worry you. It might just be because I applied on September first. They probably just review applications by order of arrival. I checked the admissions page of UVic for my program, it says they will make admissions decisions on the last week of February, so maybe the History department will make decisions around the same time :)
