Appppplication Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 (edited) So yes I know we're all in the humanities and our lives are intricately intertwined with our reading. But what are you listening to??? We all have the soundtrack of our lives, whether to get us through tough admissions season or just in general. So here's your chance to make all of our lives richer.... I'll start, because right this very moment I'm listening to Beck: Morning Phase, and it is very nice indeed. I was so excited for this album to come out some time ago due to the single Say Goodbye that I first heard. I love that song. And then, you know, that whole Grammy's things too... jhefflol Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 (edited) The entire What You Don't See album by The Story So Far. Its always relevant to my life in one way or another. The first song is titled Things I Can't Change. I think that's pretty self-explanatory for right now. Other than that, I listen to Yo-Yo Ma's unaccompanied cello suites when I'm reading and writing. 1Q84 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 YES! I've been wanting to start this thread but I didn't want to spam the board. Here's a great song for when I'm feeling scared about my future: Lycidas and kurayamino 2

Yo Appppplication, I'mma let you finish but Beyonce etc. etc. etc. you get the idea. I recently got every Alan Parsons Project album on vinyl and have been listening to those a bunch. Special mention goes to "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" because this is an English forum and it's based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. Other Decisions Season hits include some very angry black and viking metal, because screaming/growling along to that is probably healthier than screaming/growling at students who roll their eyes in my class or my poor, embattled SO. Appppplication Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 I can already tell that this thread is going to be amazing!

fancypants09 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Great thread! To stave off the freezing winter temps I am listening to lots of Soca beats. I need the sugary upbeat music to get me through the days!
Dr. Old Bill Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 YES! I've been wanting to start this thread but I didn't want to spam the board . ME TOO! I've seriously considered it a few times now, since we've had a few music discussions within other threads... I haven't bought anything new in the 2015 calendar year as yet, but am looking very forward to Torche's new album Restarter which comes out in a couple of weeks. Torche has a very unique sound -- dense and heavy, with a lot of rumbling low notes...but there's something unmistakably positive and optimistic about their music. It's considered "metal," but is generally more like QOTSA in terms of heaviness. Some of the albums from last year I'm still playing pretty regularly include TV on the Radio's Seeds, which I would probably call the 2014 Album of the Year, for me. A close second would be The New Pornographers' Brill Bruisers. I've been a big fan of them for about ten years, when my best friend at the time worked on a couple of their albums. I also met one of the members while I was doing a recording session in a small studio, but it was before they were big, and I didn't know who he was! I'm actually seeing them in concert down in Richmond on Saturday. Great Valentine's Day outing for my wife and I. I've also been listening the heck out of Wolf Alice. They're a UK band and don't have any albums out yet, but have a couple of EPs and a couple of singles. I heard the first eight bars or so of "Moaning Lisa Smile" as incidental music on an HBO series last year, and had to find out what it was...and wasn't disappointed! I'll be seeing them later this month as well during their first brief American tour. I think they might become a fairly big band, and I'm rather tickled that I've caught on to them "before they were famous."
Lycidas Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Anything by The National is typically my go-to music for a stressed out period, but surprisingly I've found myself listening to nothing but Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited for the past three weeks. I think the abstractness of Dylan's lyrics on the album mirrors the abstractness of the graduate application process quite well, actually Ramus 1
pannpann Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Everything by The Wonder Years has felt really apropos this year of applying. But especially Suburbia: I've Given You All and Now I'm Nothing (oh yes that's an intentional Ginsberg reference). That band has the perfect balance of angst, social anxiety and "what the hell am I doing with my life?" echo449 1

There's been a lot of Dylan for me lately, both in father and son forms. Highway 61 Revisited has been on my playlist, as well as Jakob Dylan's Seeing Things. Outside of that there's been a lot of study music on Pandora which includes Moby, Tokimonsta, Xx, Colcannon, and Miles Davis. I'm loving this thread though. It's awesome to see what kind of music people listen to!
.letmeinplz// Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Joanna Newsom - Peach Plum Pear I've had "The Milk Eyed Mender" on repeat lately - one of my favorite albums! I like Joanna Newsom a lot, but my girlfriend doesn't like her at all so I have to listen to her in secret...
Ramus Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I've been trying to finish up my thesis, so I've been listening to Daft Punk's Alive 2007 album on repeat. There's something about loud, fast club music that motivates me to write about early modern logic.
toasterazzi Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Definitely always Beyonce (duh!). I also have a lot of Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and J. Cole on regular rotation. I've also been on a Missy Elliott kick since the Super Bowl. And I regularly listen to The Read podcast. It's one of my favorite things. And of course, I rapidly consumed Serial like just about everybody else haha.
andalus Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 been listening to more hip hop. Today, Childish Gambino's because the inter.net. Because if Donald Glover can be a great rapper, actor, comedian, and an all around good guy, maybe there's hope for the rest of us. Also Kendrick hypervodka and ProfLorax 1 1

I really wanted to like it but just.... couldn't.
khyleth Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I'm oscillating between a few moods: When I'm in my "strong independent editor who don't need no PhD" mode, I'm listening to the new Doomtree album. http://youtu.be/MCJJ5aR5vwA When I think my whole life is about to collapse, I drown it out with doom metal (Windhand, specifically). And when I think maybe I'll end up with an acceptance after all, I'm getting into Courtney Barnett. http://youtu.be/bcnIhzaDTd0

I really wanted to like it but just.... couldn't. I liked the Pinkprint quite. There are definitely some songs I could do without, and I don't understand who was in charge of determining the singles because I think there are far better songs on the album than Bed of Lies of Pills N Potions. 1Q84 1

HesseBunuel90 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Lately I've been listening to Jenny Lewis' album The Voyager. The lyric in the opening song "Head Under Water" (there's a little bit of magic, everybody has it. There's still sand left in the hourglass) has been my rallying cry lately.
