Also, is it typical for Wayne Lesser to ignore emails? Or is there someone else I should be emailing with questions?

Oh man, getting an email reply from Wayne is close to impossible. Did you cc Amy? She's your best bet for a reply.

Do you like it there? Are people nice?

Late reply, but I'm totally agreeing with dazedandbemused. I also had to make the decision between Davis and Austin, and it was a close race in everything "important" but the people totally sold Austin for me. Everyone on the visit was so welcoming and happy to get to know me, and it hasn't changed the semester & a half I've been here. It's actually kinda surprising how supportive everyone is, when I sit down and think about it. I'm genuinely friends with grad students both within and without my cohort. I can't stress enough how great this community is (to sound like a broken record).

And definitely, definitely go to Barbarella's. At least once.

Don't stress too much about finding a place to live. It's definitely doable, roommate or not, and the further you go out from campus the easier it is to find cheaper housing. Buses are free with a UT ID, so if you don't mind a bit of a commute, it can be extremely affordable. I'm splitting an $800 rent on a 2-bedroom up north, and my bus commute is no more than 30-40 minutes at worst. Granted, it's a terrible complex and we're moving, but the point remains, look outside of neighborhoods immediately surrounding campus. North of 51st, I think, is going to be your best bet. At least in my experience.

Awesome. Thanks so much for responding. Y'all are making me so excited. It sounds great.

Is waitlist at UT operated on a field basis? Can they opt for more than one kid per field? And what is the average strength of the class?

Yes, the waitlist is according to field because their philosophy is that each incoming cohort is meant to represent a cohesive representation of the departments strengths. Specifically, I was told that they want the people in the cohort to compliment each other in a way that stimulates a feeling of intellectual community. There's usually more than one person in a few fields, like Medieval and Victorian, but that's to be expected with such large cohorts. And I'm not really sure what you're asking in your last question, could you clarify?

I was just asking how large the cohort was?..and a field like Digital Literacies is likely to have one new student entering per year, then?

Just to update, I emailed the GC a week ago and still haven't heard a peep by email, mail, phone, or UT Direct application status online. I am perplexed.

Oh, that I actually don't know for certain. I know they had planned to shrink the cohort size this year because of budget issues, but I don't know what they decided on. The last I heard, it was going to be about 18 people. And yes, at least for the last three cohorts there's been one DLL person.

The word you're looking for is "humiliating". But if my foolishness can provide levity in what I know is a stressful time, then I suppose there's some upside to all this  :)

At risk of sounding like a total hick... Well nevermind I don't care. This Hotel they have us staying in is so fancy!!!!

random question---but what days does the visiting weekend run? I'm waitlisted and waiting on acceptees deciding between U Texas and other programs so I was hoping to get a potential time frame for their final decisions after this weekend:)

Saying true things doesn't make you a hick!  :) This is a really nice hotel, never seen one like this on a campus before.

Hey goldfinch, I'm about 90% sure I'll be turning down UT. I'm an Americanist, so not sure if it'll help you, but there were plenty of people there wavering so I imagine more spots will open up.

It seems like an awesome program and honestly I prefer it to UNC, but UNC is undeniably a better fit for me.

Thanks, Caroline! I have two offers in-hand from great programs, but I'm waitlisted at UT. At this point I'm not planning to take it even if I get it, but do you feel like sharing more about why you and others are wavering?

at any rate I think UT had the last visiting days of most programs so maybe everyone can begin to finalize choices by this weekend and they can trickle down to other waitlists.

I have no idea why others were still deciding aside from one girl who wanted to be closer to family and another who is considering a program ranked 13 rather than Austin's 17.

Nobody had anything bad to say. Everyone was warm and fabulous. Seriously it seems like a dream program. My main reasons are location and chapel hill's stellar placement rate (plus ch is nineteenth century American heaven)
