uselesstheory Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Hi -- figured I'd start the IU thread for Fall 2015. Anyone headed here for a graduate program in the fall? I'll be a doctoral student in Sociology.
Liz113 Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I will be a Masters student in Speech Language Pathology.
ToomuchLes Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I accepted an offer to do my Masters in United States History at IU =D! Very exciting!! Excepting for the part of moving from CA to IU ...
Liz113 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Uf, moving from California. Are you ready for the cold?
Rylai Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I'll most likely be attending IU for an MAT in Classics. I'm in Texas now but originally from St. Louis, so I'm happy to be moving back to the midwest.
ToomuchLes Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Uf, moving from California. Are you ready for the cold? I've never experienced the real meaning of "cold," (unless 40F is considered cold haha) so this will definitely be an experience! I think after my time in IN, I will truly appreciate CA weather more

Looking forward to getting to know several of you.
Rylai Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I made a similar post in the Bloomington City Guide thread, but figured I'd post here as well. Anybody found a decent living situation yet? I'm traveling to Bloomington in two weeks to scope out apartments, and so far I'm interested in Fountain Park (east of campus on 10th street) and Heritage Apartments (south of campus on Hillside Drive), both managed by Regency. Have you guys found anything else that looks 1) reasonably priced, 2) not too far from campus, 3) away from the undergrad party scene? I might be able to visit them and let you know what I think if you give me any suggestions.
audiu Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I was just in Bloomington this past weekend looking for a place. I had also considered Heritage, but decided against it just from the outside/area. I'm probably a little more picky though. The price was the only thing that seemed appealing to me. I signed a lease with SummerHouse at Indiana. All utilities included, plus internet and cable. They have fully furnished options as well, which was another plus in my book considering I'll be moving kind of far and prefer not to have to worry about bringing a ton with me. The price was really the only con, but for what it included, it seemed worth it to me. It was really nice and perfect size for one person! It's right down the street from College Mall, so basically everything (groceries, food, etc.) is right there and not around undergrads! It is also pretty new (only opened last summer...used to be a hotel so it still kind of has that same feel, the first floor of each building is actually still used as extended stay rooms for people just visiting, but everything is new). I plan on taking the bus to campus (as I tried to visit the campus and walk around, but it was completely awful parking wise, and I can now see why people suggest taking the bus instead of parking on campus). It seems to be maybe only a 10 minute ride, so not bad at all. Overall though, I loved Bloomington and am excited to move there in the Fall!
allplaideverything Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I made a similar post in the Bloomington City Guide thread, but figured I'd post here as well. I might be able to visit them and let you know what I think if you give me any suggestions. I recently finished my MFA at IU and am still in Bloomington through the summer. I live in Heritage Apartments right now, and I lived across the street from Fountain Park my first year. Both are nice, quiet neighborhoods, and both are right next to a bus line to campus and downtown. The Heritage Apartments maybe aren't the best / nicest, but maintenance is always on hand to fix stuff, etc. I don't have any big complaints. In case you don't have a car: the bus from Fountain Park has a dramatically reduced schedule during spring break / winter break / summer, and the walk to downtown from there isn't fun in the rain / snow / construction. The bus from Heritage doesn't change its schedule, but it doesn't run on Sundays--but the walk to campus and downtown is a little easier, too. I've got some friends who live in Dunnhill apartments. Those seem nice, too, but I think there's a lot more undergrads around there. Anyway, if anybody here has specific questions about Bloomington, send me a message. Congrats! It's a beautiful town. Bumblebee Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 As allplaideverything said the bus frequency from FP reduces a lot during breaks and Sundays as well (one every hour and a half or so), which can be a real pain, but during the semester weekdays there's one almost every 10 minutes (lines 6 and 6 Limited). I work in Ballantine Hall and it takes me around 35-40 minutes to get there if I walk and around 25 minutes to get to the Wells library. It's a nice walk when it's nice and sunny and you're not in a rush, but definitely not in the winter. Getting to Marsh (the closest supermarket) takes around 20 minutes on foot and getting to the mall takes around 25. FP can be a bit pricy compared to other places, but the management is good. They organize activities (Thanksgiving parties, free breakfasts during finals week, chocolate party for Valentine's) and they're quick with maintenance. They may not be that good cleaning in the winter, though. But maybe it's just my impression - I used to live un Upstate New York before coming to Bloomington and they handled snow and ice better there. I don't know about Heritage Apts, but since it's the same management I would imagine they offer a similar service. I also know of people who live in Steeplechase (nice place, but too far from downtown), Reserve on Third and Meadow Park (these last two further east than FP). They all seem to be fine in those apartments (at least I haven't heard them complain about them).
