sreyb Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 (edited) Hi Guys, I had an interview (not really great) yesterday from a really great university that I hope admits me. The professor was super friendly and was not any of the POIs I mentioned in my SOP. We almost ran out of time and the professor told me that he would be happy to reply to my queries via email. I sent a thank you note thereafter with some questions and so far, I have not yet received a reply. Does this mean I am rejected?? I am really confused and heart broken at the same time. GeoDUDE! Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Why would it mean you are rejected ? Its been less than 24 hours. Chubberubber and tito balisimo 1 1
sreyb Posted February 28, 2015 Author Posted February 28, 2015 (edited) I think the interview didn't went that well and probably, it seemed like he was not convinced about my decisions for phD. He said once that he understands that it's been long since I published my papers and that I have been working for the past 5 yrs. And thereafter, he asked me a question about my current work. There were also many times I felt I could have said something in a better way, but somehow didn't (it was my first interview and I was nervous like hell). Also, she didn't switch on the video. Is it normal? Basically, I am just freaking out Edited February 28, 2015 by sreyb
deepfriedsushi Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 This does NOT mean you are rejected! If you can, try to calm down. Breathe deeply, have your hot drink of choice and some chocolate =) Professors are really, really busy people. And they have very different habits with email. I know some who will always reply within 5 minutes, and others who will take days even if you're asking a really simple question. Give this professor a week, and then if the questions are important, remind them very gently. There were also many times I felt I could have said something in a better way, but somehow didn't This is how I feel after every interview I've ever done. Sometimes I do well, sometimes I don't. But feeling like this means precisely nothing =) Also, she didn't switch on the video. Is it normal? Yes. I've had 3 interviews - 2 without video and 1 with video. Usually I answer without video, and then switch mine on if the professor has theirs on. I can fully understand how you feel - this is a nerve wracking process! Please know you have NO reason to worry. It will probably take quite some time before the professor gets back to you to let you know whether you have been accepted or rejected, and until then, second guessing the result is not going to be useful at all. The best thing you can do is go do something relaxing / fun and try not to worry about it!

Ya true, but the thing is she used to reply quite swiftly before the interview...The waiting is almost killing me. I am not hoping much for this as well, since they generally accept 9 to 15% of students who applied. Did you have interviews for all the programs that you were accepted?

I had a similar experience. I too had an interview that I felt didn't go really well, and she assured me I could email her for advice and whatnot, and she never responded. I didn't get an acceptance (or rejection) yet. I think that they say that type of thing to everyone. I wouldn't hold any grain of salt to what most interviewers say because even if you think it went bad you may still get an admit or rejection. In reality there is nothing else you could do about it.
PhDEducation Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I can relate I had a 15 min Skype Interview. Ahhh 4 faculty members all asked 1 question 2 at least asked follow up questions. It was on Skype my first time. I know in my heart my answer were right for me, that's what will keep me going. Now just waiting another 2 weeks.
