slplivin Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hi! I know we will not be hearing much news from Northwestern until March 18th, but I was curious if any of you have visited the program or heard anything about it? I know that it is highly ranked and very pricey, but I was just wondering what other opinions people have about it? I have heard that it is very research based, can anyone confirm this? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
HogHug Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 (edited) Hey! I'd love more info about this too, but I have a first hand account as well. I currently work as an intern for an SLP who went to Northwestern and she has nothing but wonderful things to say about the program. She specialized in early intervention and now works at a pediatric clinic. Her case load is largely children with aphasia, though she also works with some motor speech kids. She says Northwestern's program is very personalized and the clinical training is really exceptional. She is also jealous of current students because the new clinic is supposed to be amazing! She continues to keep in touch with faculty to this day and recently visited with the dean, I believe. Also, I've shadowed her and other young SLPs quite a bit and I think her training really shows. She is one of my favorite SLPs to watch because she is so comfortable and effective with the children. She is extremely knowledgable and can articulate her processes really easily. Of course, a lot of these could be personal qualities -- she is a pretty exceptional person -- but I don't think we should discount Northwestern's role in her being so great! Let me know if you have any other specific questions I can pass along! She loves talking about the program, so I could ask her later today if I see her. Edited March 2, 2015 by HogHug
ahirsh7 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I also observed an SLP Northwestern grad. She actually said the program is NOT as research based as others. She went to the UNC for her undergrad and she said their SLP program was very research based. I'm also currently in their prerequisites program and the professors are really great. Can't wait to hear!!!
slplivin Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 That is great to hear thank you for the responses! I am glad that it is not as research based as I had originally thought since I am more interested in the clinical side of things! Good luck to everyone...only 16 days!
slpchi Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I have heard really great things about the program!! But it is SOOO pricey
Holly44 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I didn't apply to northwestern, but I'm curious as to what is considered pricey. Is it comparable to NYU tuition or is it even more?
limegin Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Northwestern tuition is 120,000 for the two years, if I remember right. I applied but am probably not going to attend without scholarship money.
Holly44 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Ouch. Hopefully you'll get some sort of funding if accepted.
limegin Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Sure hope so! I would love to go there and be in the Chicago area but all of my other schools are cheaper--even UW-Madison is less than half the price. It's hard to justify paying so much for basically the same education.
slplivin Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) Tomorrow is the day! (hopefully) Edited March 17, 2015 by slplivin
nicoleac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Fingers crossed everyone! Thank you! I got a weird email this morning...I never got the email about March 18th, like it seems other people did. However, this morning I got an email saying, "Your application decision will be delivered today, March 18th." Lol what? What was the point of that? Thanks for the warning...the subject line of the email got my hopes up!
limegin Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I haven't received either email about March 18! I hope nothing happened to my application
nicoleac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I haven't received either email about March 18! I hope nothing happened to my application I have heard from other people who haven't received an email either. It is strange, but I think everything should be okay! I called the school back in January and confirmed they had all my application materials, and they said as long as CSDCAS was mailed to them, they have it.

slplivin Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 Wonder what time they will start sending decisions? This is nerve wracking!!
nicoleac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I just got my decision email. I am accepted! They said I am being considered for a merit-based scholarship, but will not let me know until April 13th. If I don't get the scholarship, I will be declining! If any of you are waitlisted, I hope this helps.
nicoleac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Wow congrats! That's so exciting! Thank you so much GOOD LUCK! I imagine you will get yours really soon!!!
limegin Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Hope so! I'm 90% set on UW-Madison, this is the last school that could change my mind!
slplivin Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 I just received my email as well and was accepted! Am also being considered for a merit-based scholarship. Very exciting! But it is soooo expensive....
nicoleac Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Congrats on UW-Madison!! I feel like now that I have been accepted to schools I would be happy attending...now I care much less about getting accepted to the rest of the schools I applied to, but I want a decision just for the peace of mind! It's nice to cross another one off the list instead of playing the waiting game bindlestiff 1

But it is soooo expensive.... Congratulations!!!!! I know, the cost is why I'm probably declining. A partial scholarship of a tuition that high is still probably not enough, no matter how great the school is.

I feel really lucky because it lowered my stress so much this last month! I can't wait to finally commit somewhere.
kmfl9 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I was also just offered admission to Northwestern and am being considered for a merit-based scholarship. I wonder if anyone actually got financial aid outright?
