Can I take post-bacc classes in different places??

Recommended Posts

Okay I am very confused b/c I never anticipated looking into this at all.  I hope someone had an excellent adviser and can help me out!

I am currently in a 12 class post-bacc program.  They have outlined 12 classes we take as "common" pre-reqs for Graduate programs such as phonetics, anatomy, audiology, neuro-anatomy etc.

I am curious can I take one of the classes they want me to: "speech and hearing science" at a different school/online to get it out of the way this summer?  I want to b/c I commute 3 hours round trip daily and next semester the schedule is 5 days a week  .

One reason i'm so confused is different schools want different classes so I'm all mixed up on do I need to take all these classes?  But then what about my observation hours that are required?

I'm so confused b/c do I have to take all the post-baccs in my program since I'm telling schools that's where I took them or do they just highlight stuff on transcripts and check it off?

I'm already going to be sending them 4 transcripts since I took a chem class online and went to a CC my first 2 years and am doing my post-bacc away from my undergrad school since it didn't have one.

This post is so jumbled if anyone can interpret it i'd appreciate the clarity

As long as the class fits the prequisite, yes you should be able to take it anywhere you want.  I know many people who fufilled their preqs at different schools. If you want to attend the particular school you are now taking your prerequisites, I would check with them if it is acceptable.

For most programs as long as you take the classes needed and it fufills their requirement, it does not matter where you took the class.

I think you can take them anywhere, BUT...when I visited UT Austin this summer, they specifically said that they would not accept ANY community college transcripts...which seems a little snooty to me. But, you might want to take that into consideration, and call the schools you would like to attend just to double check. Good luck! And good job commuting so far! dannng!

Something also to consider: you need to send all transcripts, so the more places, the more transcripts, the higher probability of a problem. I wouldn't say this is a major concern, but sometimes those transcripts can get lost in the process (this would be something out of your hands, but nonetheless still frustrating if it happens).

Seriously no cc classes? I will not be applying to them! I went to a great cc with great teachers to save money that is totally snotty of them! Plus I don't have time to retake stats which I took there.

Also I see the class I want to take is upper division so I will need to take it online at a 4 year. But I am trying to take it the same place as my online chem class so hoping for one less transcript!

I had a friend who took her pre-req post bacc classes at two different schools and it worked out fine for her. What my advice would be though is look at the schools you want to apply to and make sure that you are taking the classes that they require. I am currently finishing up my post bacc online through Eastern New Mexico universtiy and when I went to apply for grad schools I found out that one of the schools I really wanted to apply for had more pre-reqs than ENMU offered. I wish I had known this earlier because I would have taken that class at another school.

I wish you well on this journey into grad school.

I took my pre-reqs at two different universities. I was planning to just take them from one school, but the grad director at my top choice grad program recommended that I go to a second school for a couple classes that I'd be missing by following the one school's pre-req program.

Do you already have a bachelor's degree?

Yes I already have my bachelors degree in an unrelated field.

How do you figure this out?  Meaning oh this class they absolutely want and this one is no big deal?  Do they only let you know after you have sent your transcripts and they see some important classes missing?  I feel this is probably an important step for me to be doing to be applying to schools that are a good match.  Also my "adviser" via email sent me a list of classes accepted as equivalent by my current program.  I feel like she was saying I couldn't take the class at the school I wanted to...BUT if I don't plan on applying to my current school's Graduate program does it matter where I take it?

Hi! I was shocked to find out I needed two more prereq classes prior to starting grad school in the fall but was able to easily and very quickly get in to Utah State to take them online over the summer. You are automatically accepted as a non degree seeking student and Heather Humphries waived the registration restrictions within minutes. Good luck!

So I'm applying this Fall and thinking about applying to around 10 schools would your advice to be try and figure out a class that is offered at maybe 5 that I didn't take or do you think it's better to wait and see where you get in before taking that particular Grad Programs extra classes?
