Hey guys!

I am currently a junior Undergrad at St. John's University and looking at a bunch of graduate programs. I am absolutely in love with Deaf culture and have taken 2 college classes and one summer class at a Deaf school for ASL. I would love to work with this population, but also would love to work in a school in general, and am open to hospitals as well.

Does anybody know any specifics about the program at Gallaudet? The only things I can find are on their website, but I would love to get an insider's point of view!

Thanks!

Hey, I emailed the Director of the program recently to get some more information. They receive about 200 applications each year for 15 spots. They have a 20 criteria that they use to decide on acceptance. The GPAs are typically above 3.5 and GRE scores are at or above 50 percentile. However, they said that some students don't have these requirements but, score higher on the other criteria which pulls up their overall score for acceptance. They also said they prefer those who have some type of background in ASL! She said about 1/3 of graduates move on to work with the deaf population. Hope this helps. It looks like you have a good shot based on your stats and experience!Goodluck!

If you're open to working with the D/HoH from the auditory-verbal therapy side of things rather than ASL or "Total Communication", I can give you a list of programs that have that emphasis.

Gallaudet is actually NOT on my target schools list because they are well-known to be in the anti-oralism camp. I don't have a dog in the fight for people who are pre-lingually deaf, but my HoH child had normal hearing for at least the first 2 years of life and possibly longer. Spoken English *IS* her primary language and while I'm not opposed to her learning ASL as a 2nd language, that's not my priority.

Thank you guys so much! I mostly am just hoping that if I can't get a job with the Deaf, Gallaudet will still prepare me for other work environments well.

What other schools have that emphasis? I'm applying to Gallaudet but I'd like to maybe add a few more schools that would prepare me for working with the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community.
