Yes, congrats, fencergirl! Does anyone know if Oregon and USC release PhD and MA results at the same time or PhD decisions first and then MA decisions?

Oh okay, gotcha! My guess is that the MA and Ph.D. programs would be on different timelines, but I am really not sure, sorry! Also it was an informal email from the department, not an official acceptance so the official acceptances may take a bit longer still.

As I mentioned on the results page I turned it down as I've accepted an offer from Northwestern for their History PhD program.

fencergirl, many thanks for the input! I hope so. Do they mention anything about funding in the email?

It is very kind of you to let the school know that you are not going to attend. I believe that is very helpful for people on the waitlist. Best wishes to you at Northwestern! 

BTW, does anyone know what funding is like at Washington or Hawaii?

@daniel345 The MA and PhDs are handled by two different departments at USC. PhD acceptances are long out (the recruits are visiting right now actually), but I believe MA results are coming out/are out this week. No idea if they are releasing waitlist/acceptances/rejects all at the same time though.

I saw someone posted on the results page: “The Graduate Admission Committee has carefully reviewed the applications and a short list of candidates has been prepared for further consideration. I regret to inform you that you have not been short-listed. Although we are yet to have finalized the admission process, we thought we should inform you of the status of your application to assist you with your own planning.”

However, I did not receive the email about shortlist, and I did not receive the email about recruitment event, either. Does this mean that I am on the waitlist?

@daniel345, if you haven't been rejected yet it seems reasonable to assume you may be informally waitlisted? But it might be appropriate to contact the school at this point and ask if there's any update on your status.

Also for people on this board and for future applicants' reference, I just got (and turned down) my offer from Yale for the East Asian Studies M.A. and it was a fully funded offer which was a little unexpected. I don't know if all candidates are fully funded but at least some are so for those of you applying next year and considering funding seems like Yale is definitely one to take a look at! (This was for the one year M.A.). Also seems like they definitely make an effort to recruit diverse candidates.

Accepted onto the Yale MA EAS with 20,000 funding. Really wish I'd got full funding, going to be a real scramble now

FYI, UCSB said that they are currently finalizing their decisions and they are hoping the process would be complete before the end of March. Minnesota said that we can expect a decision by late March or early April and they will do their best to inform us of their decision as soon as they are able. I emailed USC and received the same reply. I am still waiting to hear from UMich and Oregon.

I have been accepted to Washington (PhD), Hawaii (PhD), and Ohio State (MA). My biggest concern is funding. However, I haven't heard much about it. If anyone could tell me anything about what funding is like at these schools, I would greatly appreciate it.

How is everyone doing? Have you received funding (fellowship, tuition waiver, living stipend, GA/TA/RA, etc)? What is your decision?

I'm still waiting to hear back as well! But I know some people heard back already and that all notice should be out this month.

Loving this thread, @machacreampuffthank you so much for starting it! I got offers from Columbia EALC M.A and Stanford's East Asian Studies, right now I am struggling very hard between the two because Columbia wants to hear back by March 23. I have a clear research topic that I am interested in and there are professors that I like from both schools. My research area is contemporary Chinese and Korean literature. Please give me any suggestions or share your experience!

I heard about funding the same time I heard about admission at UCLA - fellowship and stipend for the first year, then the next four would include at least one year of fellowship/stipend and three years of either TA/GRA work or funding/stipend depending on departmental need (or whatever I could get by applying for fellowships). A big relief since it was my first choice -- and also because I wasn't admitted with funding anywhere else!

Hawaii also let me know about lack of funding when they admitted me to the MA program, but I'm sure their PhD program budgeting is on a different timeline, especially since their application deadline wasn't until mid-January.

Thanks for the post! I applied to their Ph.D program and got an email from my POI in early/mid-January said the committee is quite interested in me but also think it would be better for me to have a master first, so I told her I agree to transfer my application to the master program. But since then, I haven't heard anything from Harvard. Hope something good is coming!!!!

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been posting but I'm currently facing a dilemma and was wondering if any of you could offer me some advice. I've gotten into the following programs:

*UCSB-East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies MA/PhD----Fully funded for 1 year, guaranteed TA-ships for 5 years
*UCLA-East Asian Studies MA----Fully funded for 1 year
*UChicago-MAPH (East Asian Languages and Civilizations)----No funding
*WUSTL-East Asian Studies MA-----75% remission tuition, guaranteed TA-ships
*Yale-East Asian Studies MA-----No funding
*USC-East Asian Area Studies MA----No funding I'm assuming
*Duke-East Asian Studies (CAH Track) MA----Scholarship but not fully covered

I'm narrowing my choice to UCLA's MA and UCSB's PhD...but I can't decide whether or not it would be better to go to a higher tier MA at UCLA (then apply to PhD programs later) or go straight into an MA/PhD at a middle tier school (UCSB). I know that my choice should be based on my research interests mostly but realistically, school ranking has made a difference for many hoping to secure tenure track professorships.

 

Oh! I forgot to mention that my specialty is Contemporary Chinese Film/TV/Media.

No problem! I'm glad this thread could be of help. I would personally choose Columbia only because I'm from UC Berkeley and we're rival schools ya know? Hahaha But in all honesty, maybe you can see what funding is like for each school and make your decision based on that? Both are very expensive schools to go to after all...it may also provide you with leverage if you can say that you're considering other ("better") offers from other schools.

Hi, machacreampuff. I would choose UCLA, given that they have a stronger (if not the strongest) Film/TV/Media faculty than UCSB does per my knowledge. Have the professors at UCSB or UCLA contacted you? I would choose the school which has the more (most) encouraging professor(s).

I just saw one UMich admit. Does anyone want to claim it?

I also just got into Harvard RSEA but with no funding! I'm narrowing things down to Harvard and UCLA now...but any opinions on what would be better for Chinese film/tv/media and whether Harvard might be worth the investment would be great! Thanks!

Congrats! I got into RSEA as well. How did you find out about funding? I'm wondering whether I have to wait for snail mail to find out. I'm living in Japan right now so that might take a while...

Congrats! I'm not sure about funding actually...but I'm going to assume I didn't receive it.

If you're choosing between funded and unfunded masters: TAKE THE FUNDING! Even for Harvard, it's not worth going into that much debt when you have an option that will pay. That said, you may want to contact Harvard (or any other MAs you were accepted to and still interested in) and let them know about the funding from UCLA. They may be able to give you more money, but you never know.
