CBG321 Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I know this has been asked before but does a good verbal and written trump a low quant score? My quant was 37th(149) percentile ...probably due to the fact that I have not taken a math class relevant to the GRE in over a decade. And i've tried to look at ranges this score is within that 20 point range for some schools and below for others. Thanks in advance!
Jolie717 Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) I think it depends on the school. Sorry - not that helpful, I know. But I was looking up what the expected GRE range was for Ivy League grad school programs (bio, chem, physics, math etc) and even the least math-dependent among them (bio supposedly) still had fairly high minimum quant scores. As do most of the top-ranked SLP schools, but to a lesser extent. Edited to add:PS: You said your score is due to not having taken a relevant math course in a decade - so are you planning to study and re-take? In my experience quant is the easiest score to raise. curly_girl Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 If you check out EdFind, you will find you quant score is in the range for many grad schools. If your overall score is over 300, I think you will be fine.

In my experience quant is the easiest score to raise.Well the biggest issue is I just can't do math quickly I feel like there were some I just flat out did not know and others I probably got right but I am not getting faster at solving them even when I know how to solve. My concern retaking is I got 85th verbal and 93rd written I didn't want to risk those going down...also my current school schedule is hectic leaving me no time to study so my exams surrounding the gre were getting lower grades.
slptobe92 Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I think it depends on the school, but I've heard that most SLP programs look at verbal more than any other part of the GRE. I even had an application only ask me for my verbal score. Math and science are often lumped together but honestly as an SLP you won't be doing much math it's much more science-based (unlike audiology which is very math and algorithm-based). Good luck!

curly_girl Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Your scores are similar to mine, and I didn't retake. I didn't think it was worth the $200 or so dollars. You could always call or email the schools you are considering applying to and ask.

They are top 20 so I figure if it is good enough for them hopefully it is for my other choices as well.

This process is so expensive

CBG321 Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 I got my first acceptance recently so in my case it worked I'm in ? obviously won't hear back from other schools until March but thought I'd leave a positive perspective on it!
kumapanda Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 What if it's the opposite? For me, my quantitative score is higher than my verbal score by a small margin. I have a 155 for quantitative (60th percentile) and 151 for verbal (50th percentile). Would it matter to the schools?
Jolie717 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I'm not sure anyone can answer this question at this point, unless they are on the admissions committee for the schools you have already applied to. I would just sit back and relax and wait for responses. That's what I am trying to do, at any rate lol. thespeechblog.com 1
