Javits Fellowship

I thought I would start a new thread for those of us who applied this year, since there was one last year, even if this may not get used much until next semester.

I'm wondering, though, whether anyone else has received the confirmation that their application was received? The application materials say in one place that you should call after 15 days if you haven't (which have passed), but in another place of the application it says 15 business days (which have not yet passed).

Of course, this is the same application that says three times to submit originals and 2 copies of the application materials, and says two times to submit the originals and 3 copies of the application materials. All within the same document. Seriously...

I'm thinking that perhaps I should call next week, but I don't want to nag them. (And if for some reason they didn't receive it, I don't know that there is anything to be done about that anyway....)

Ah, the joy of the Javits instructions! I was so frustrated by the 2 copies / 3 copies thing. Have you heard from them yet? I haven't, and have been meaning to call, since it is well past 15 days by both definitions.

I still haven't heard anything either. I keep thinking about calling, but then wonder if there would be any point. If they received it, they received it. If not, then I will just be frustrated and sad, but I don't think there is anything to be done about it....

But I'm a bit relieved to know that someone else hasn't heard back from them also. If you call them, do let me know!

I haven't heard anything yet- though my phone was definitely attached to my body all day. I'm hoping that this delay is for real, because that means I still have a chance! Wishful thinking, probably, but let me enjoy it a while longer... :P

Here is a clip of the email from them... "We are running a little behind this year, due to the snow and the lateness of the review. I would guess that we will be able to make award annoucements by April 1 (hopefully earlier, but I'm leaving time for the Departmental clearance process)."

Spoke with Carmen today, about an hour ago. She says they are running behind with no idea of when they might get clearance from DoE to start making calls. She says it's frustrating to get bombarded by calls when she has no real news--keep in mind there are over 800 applicants. She said she hopes to call the finalists on March 15--maybe even March 10th. But then she added alternates likely wouldn't be called until the beginning of April, and rejection notices would be sent out in late April probably.

Good luck to all!

Thanks for all the information, everybody. My parents live within a couple hundred miles of DC, and school there was cancelled for something like 10 days, I'm not surprised that the DoE is behind. They should just post something on the Javits website, or email applicants, so that they don't get so many phone calls. I can see how that could be annoying!

Hardest part about this fellowship is that with over 800 applicants, and notifications being made by phone instead of an online list or email, if the ones who are selected don't post - it basically means the only way to find out if notifications have been made is through calling the Javits Office. I actually received a phone call from a 202 area code last Friday, and it turned out to be a friend calling from DC, not the Javits office. I think he was wondering why I sounded disappointed when he said who it was!

Seems like a good idea to make an electronic notification system, like the NSF does. Judging from this website, people love to check their application status online, which makes it all the more suspenseful for this fellowship when we can't check anything except our call logs on our phones!

out of curiosity, anyone hear from javits?

er actually, just e-mailed and got a quick response saying that notifications have not been made and may possibly be made around march 19th (uncertain, but for sure not before then)
