Im thinking maybe duke n washington as well? weird that theres only been one acceptance for washington,  thot that wud be my 1st notification (n rejection).

I've also been wondering if I have gotten de facto rejected from Washington. I assumed there would be more posts about them in the results than just one. But maybe they just didn't admit very many this year (or none of them happen to use grad cafe).

@Katastrophe @redhillgirl  yeah... interestingly that uw guy has the exactly same GRE as I had, other than a different gpa. lol     Hopefully that admits is just an early contact from the POI, or something like that

It would be weird for there only to have been one for Washington, even if they are being sent out in batches. When the Stanford rejections came out yesterday, a shedload of them went up on the results board within a couple of hours. I can't imagine that Washington is so many times less popular to apply to in general than Stanford, and even less popular than that on the Grad Cafe.

 

My understanding based on the GRE scores on the Washington upload is that goofylemon is the admit - perhaps they could let us know if it was informal or something?

I really like Washington's program, so would love to still be in the running!

Dunno if i rmbr it correctly but they had a pretty small cohort last yr.  5 out of 23 offers were taken. So i wud expect them to hand out more offers this yr for a larger cohort size n maybe there were more $ left to admit more grad students than usual? Just my guess.

see my previous message - I am not - I wish I were, but no I was not. I am not type of person fear of revealing my admission results, needless to say good news.

New cohorts in programs like UW should have at least twice as large as a size of 5... The yield rate was normal (~25%) for that kind of program. Therefore, I guess UW was either running out of funding last year or being too optimistic about the yield rate.

Is that one acceptance the only reason that people have been anticipating a response from UW? They sent out an email saying that they wouldn't have a decision until February, but people on here have been talking about it for a week or two now.

First time posting, but figured I'd throw my hat into the ring of people anxiously awaiting decisions from their chosen schools.

I was also wondering if anyone might have heard anything about a possible timeframe for Princeton?  I know they've sent their decisions out by this time in previous years, so I was just curious if anyone might have an idea of when decisions might be going out this year? *anxiously awaits responses*

Mostly it's because they have notified really early in the past three years. They notified on 21-Jan (2015) 25-Jan (2014) 18-Jan (2013), so we are just getting a bit antsy too

They also probably say that because most applicants WILL in fact hear in February, because they usually release rejections a week or two after the first wave of acceptances.

Very jealous of @goofylemon . Pretty awesome to hear so early from a school like Brown. Congrats again!

That makes a lot of sense. Keeping my fingers crossed that the first wave has yet to go out.

I got word today that I've been selected to present at my department's annual conference in March. I already mentioned on my applications that I had been nominated, is it worth emailing the programs I have yet to hear back from? It probably won't make that much of an impact but maybe it's worth it?

Did you mean PAA? PAA is fairly competitive, especially if you are in paper session (not poster session). Last year, PAA paper session admission rate is only around 25%. You may be able to make it a case to let the admissions know, but I don't know if it is useful.

Nope. It's as small time as it gets, only open to students at the mid-level university I recently earned my BA from. I'm glad to get the experience, but I don't really see it impressing anyone.

Yeah, I applied too high up in the rankings methinks. I really thought I had a reasonably competitive application but I suppose not. I'm worried that my letter of recommendation writers didn't say the right things... I've been out of school for two years and had to go back and ask those professors. They were enthusiastic and I was pretty memorable but you just never know...

@hopefulSocPhD, yes! Feast to your heart's content! You ARE memorable, and you ARE competitive. Those places just picked other people. Honestly, one of my profs told me that he got rejected from places he thought he'd get accepted to for sure ... he ended up getting accepted to a biggie and got his PhD there. That biggie was Harvard. It's far from over, my friend. *hugs* you're totally allowed to be sad and to cry and to have a dozen cupcakes in one setting, too, though. I'm just here as a source of encouragement <3

The fact that someone with a 148/143 GRE is claiming a UW acceptance means either 1) it's trolling or 2) GRE cutoffs don't even exist really

I can tell 148/143 will never get into UW unless the applicant's parent is donating a library to the school. That should be a trolling post.

This is not being harsh, but I don't really believe an applicant shines elsewhere can score that low in GRE.

Edit:  A Math 143 is 18% percentile. A Verbal 148 is ~35% percentile. Both of the percentiles run far below the average. I know some sociology candidates score low on Math, which may be fine. However, low scores on both sections will never survive in any program with healthy reputation. The math is especially problematic, because UW is considered one of the most quantitative-leaned programs across the country.

I don't think this should sound sting or inconsiderable to anyone. So far no one in this thread run 18/35 on GRE, and claim to applying Soc PhD.  One should note out of fairness, a person with that kind of promise entering a highly-ranked program like UW is, in fact, truly devastating to many better-deserved applicants. 

Even some test takers are not good at standardized tests or multiple choice, the percentiles combined are still too significant as an evidence of ineligibility to be admitted to UW. Well, I think I may receive many downs for this answer, but this is just to be honest.
