UnlikelyGrad Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Well, I knew I wouldn't get one anyway. So it wasn't a huge surprise not to find my name on the list.
tiffany! Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I didn't get one either. :'( Oh well, congratulations to everyone who received an award or honorable mention. Back to bed.
Neurone Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 first time applier, got an HM. Is it worth including an HM on a CV? Meaning, is it a big enough accomplishment to be put on a CV? Yes definitely. Even put it on your application for NDSEG or NSF (maybe get your mentor to mention it in a letter of rec) for next year.
Neurone Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Just woke up at 3am (east coast) to see that I got an HM...not going to lie, I'm slightly disappointed since this was my one and only shot, but better than nothing for sure. NRSA here I come... Good luck with the NRSA!
PsychologyStudent Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 HM -- first time applicant. And genuinely thrilled. Congrats to all who won, were HMed, or even put in the effort and held aspirations to make an improvement to science at all. Applying is the biggest step. (If there are any successful psychology people out there willing to chat, please drop me a private message). Best!
frenchpress Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Rejected 2 more to go. One of which I'm sure I'l lose (that being the NDSEG).
IgCal Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 woohoooo! i woke up to a nice surprise today, i got the NSF Fellowship. i had a good feeling they were gonna post it tonight, since 1. last week they said "beginning of next week" 2. that "scheduled maintenance" looked suspicious
HKK Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Anyone able to access rating sheets yet? Can't get my ratings sheet yet. I got one. OMG I can't believe I got one. It's insane. I'm shaking. I woke my poor West Coast parents up by calling them when I saw the email. Even they understand how big this is... finally!
newage2012 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) Congrats to those who won, at least you do not have to worry about the economy and your funding for the next 3 years. For me, everything rejected so far. I mean if you get rejected from NSF, chances are you are not going to get anything else, right? Heck, not even a single person from our university have won the NSF, even though we claim ourselves to be a Carnegie I Research Institution. I guess it couldn't help coming from a minority institution..... Now our TA's and GA's will be going on strike pretty soon, perhaps any minute.......... Edited April 6, 2010 by newage2012
dumbmatter Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 HM for the third straight year! Fuck! At least I'm done with it. And nobody from my school won an award this year, only 3 HM. I guess that's what I get for choosing the lab I want over the school with the biggest name.
Livestrong1188 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Anyone able to access rating sheets yet? Yes, but not through the website.. i had to use the link they sent me in the e-mail to access them. My packet was reviewed by three different people.
Jared Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Anyone else not get the notification email? My name's on the HM list. Don't think I want to call attention to their mistake by asking them . I just want to be sure and get the rating sheets when they come available.
thecircumstance Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I just checked my rating sheets. VG/VG VG/E VG/VG I received an award. Last year I actually had better ratings and received an HM 2009 E/VG E/E E/VG I definitely thought my application improved, so maybe I just had more difficult reviewers. I heard they don't use the raw rating, but compare each of the ratings to the reviewers average rating.
finnegans_cake Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Got one! (Senior Undegrad - First time applicant, obviously) I thought that they might be able to give more out to current undergrads, but I haven't seen any more than usual on the list.
csphd Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 i have seen the three rating sheets. the first thing that i learn from them? the reviewers don't read the application very carefully all of them make inaccurate statements about my application. for example, one says i started research early as an undergraduate, but i actually started research during 2nd semester as a senior. another says i got an award paper in an IEEE workshop, but it was an acm conference. another says i am currently a TA at school X (undergraduate institution), but i am a currently a TA at school Y (graduate institution). i got an HM with these ratings: Intellectual Merit: Excellent, Excellent, Very Good. Broader Impacts: Good, Excellent, Very Good. they mention my weaknesses are the vague research plan and broader impacts. for the research plan, i knew it was vague (did it last minute, so had a couple days of writing the research plan), but i thought being 1st year, it wouldn't hurt as much. guess im wrong. none said anything about my undergrad GPA (~3.5 from a top 5 CS school) or my low verbal GRE (<500), so it appears they didn't affect my chances.

Who knows. Oddly enough, even though the total number of awards went up to 2000 or whatever, the total number of awards in my division sunk down from 9 to 5. Edited April 6, 2010 by Hekog
eyne Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 HM with VG/F E/VG VG/VG Anyone know how we check our percentile ranges?
volnam Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Wow, I got E/E, VG/E, E/E. Only one reviewer pointed out my crappy "Academic Record"; a 3.5 GPA and 1420 GRE score. I hope this helps people who were looking for information! If anyone else needs to ask anything, feel free to PM me.
OH YEAH Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) didn't get it Edited April 6, 2010 by OH YEAH
geodrake Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Congratulations to everyone who received an award or a HM! Hell, congratulations to everyone with 3 ratings sheets! (I didn't make it past the first round). You guys are great, and now the stress is done! BIG HUGS TO ALL!!!
Steven Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 No award, no HM with G/VG and VG/E, 1570 GRE, 4.0 GPA. But I feel better that the reviewer comments were very positive, the money would be nice but I was really down that I didn't make the HM cut. It will be much easier to improve the research proposal than the broader impacts, so I guess I'll be back next year for another round of nail biting...
