archaeanthro Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Hi all, As it looks now, I fear I've been rejected from all the PhD programs I've applied to. Does anyone know of any Anthropology Master's programs with applications still open? I'm determined to continue academia this next year.
DYOH87 Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 (edited) To my knowledge, many UK Master's programs accept applications through the summer. I did an MSc program at UCL to re-establish academic value after not performing up to my standards in undergrad and ascertain whether or not academic anthropology was the place for me long-term. I found the experience to be both academically/intellectually and culturally (coming from America) very much worth my while, in addition to it bolstering my PhD applications. jellyfish11 Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Uchicago's MAPSS program is still accepting - the final deadline is April 30. I've heard good things about it.
MedAnth077 Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 There is actually a somewhat slightly dated thread on MAPSS, as well: Just an interesting read, since a few alums contribute with their perspective on the program. FYI. jellyfish11 1
farflung Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Have you considered taking a year off and applying to PhD programs next year? I am in the late stages of a top-tier PhD program in Anthro, and that's what I did when I didn't get in anywhere my first year applying. Plenty of people go this route in fact-- perfect your application portfolio over the next year and try again next round. Get a job, hang tight. If you are sure that you want a PhD, it seems an MA program will merely divert you for 2 years (you'll have to repeat most of the coursework in any PhD program) and possibly put you into debt, since MA programs are less likely to be funded.
anthrostudentcyn Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 MAPSS, and the New School for Social Research (NSSR usually gives some merit scholarship).
Bschaefer Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I'm currently doing my masters at Georgia State with a focus in Andean bioarchaeology. We also have mesoamerican and southwest archaeology though you can do topics outside. I deadline is in April I believe and there are funding opportunities too. http://cas.gsu.edu/graduate-studies/admissions/graduate-admissions-college-requirements/

But this is an option too
CuddlyWingman Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 What you might also do, OP, is check if some of the schools you're interested in offer spring semester admission. Those admission deadlines may be further out, and let you take more time to decide what schools would be the best fit for you. You definitely do not want to rush off to school (and headlong into debt) because you "are determined to continue in academia", just to find that you are in the wrong program. Good luck in your search!
