Looking for housing in London, Ontario

The wait is over and I have officially accepted my offer to begin a Master of Media in Journalism and Communication at the University of Western Ontario this Fall 2016! As I am just finishing up my undergrad at UBC and planning to spend the summer working in Vancouver before making the move, I'm now facing the task of trying to find housing in London, Ontario for September. If any other grad students at Western are also seeking housing or looking for a female roommate, let me know and we can team up  preferably looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom place close to campus with other grad students or young professionals.

I'm moving to London, ON as well, but I'll he living with my boyfriend in a one bedroom so I'm not much help. However, I know that the apartments near campus are primarily filled wijt undergrads, and Western is a big party school so personally I'm learning towards downtown and not near the university. We get free bus passes with tuition, so I'm just looking for a place downtown along a bus route. A lot of grad students I spoke to live downtown, but maybe you can find some to move closer to campus if that's what you want.

Good to know, thanks eternallyephemeral! My only concern was that I've been told some areas of downtown can be quite sketchy. But I guess as long as I can find a spot in a decent area, that's probably the best bet. Congrats on your acceptance!

I heard that as well, and people said anything east of Adelaide street was sketchy, and on the other side it wasn't as sketchy. Some people have recommended Richmond street, but that's where the partying is so it's probably louder. I'm looking at a bunch on Ridout street and Talbot st, if that helps.

I am also moving to London in September, starting my (second) Msc in clinical psych.. I've been looking for a 1BR apartment close to campus, ideally Masonville or Old North since I heard those are the least sketchy areas.. however, I have realized these are the priciest.. I have only been to London once, so @eternallyephemeral do you know if it possible to walk to campus from downtown? Or is too far?

Hi @clinpsyc! That's exciting that you'll be making the move as well  From what I understand, you'd be looking at about a 45 minute - 1 hour walk from downtown London to campus. Don't know if you'd be willing to do that every day or would be more likely to take transit instead.

I would look at the area around Wharncliffe/Oxford and the apartments along Platts lane. It is an easy walk to campus (20-30 minutes) and has easy access to the #2 bus.

Thanks so much! Do you have a stipend covering your tuition? Because the downtown area is farther than you would want to walk every day, it's probably better to take the bus. One bus goes across dundas and then up Wharncliffe/Western road to the university, and our tuition includes a metropass every month.

Those areas you mentioned seem good, and you're right they aren't sketchy, but I've been told that anywhere West of Adelaide Street is not sketchy. And downtown is a lot closer to everything, except of course the university. And there are quite reasonable one bedroom places (around 750 with utilities is easy to find).
