Hi guys, I'm new to this forum-- also an English Lit PhD applicant for fall 2010. Does anyone know about Temple admissions? I checked the rankings-- it's in the lower numbers but I know that often means nothing in terms of competitiveness/acceptance rates. I'd appreciate any info!

Thanks & good luck!

I'm applying there too, and they don't provide any info about their acceptance rate on their web site (I think it's pretty rare for schools to publish that info). I think it's safe to assume though that it's probably about 3-5%. That seems to be pretty standard across most programs regardless of rank.

I posted the Temple acceptance - it was a really bare-bones letter from the graduate school in the mail. Basically it just said 'Welcome! Talk to your department.' I haven't heard anything else yet.

Anyone get rejected from Temple U Lit PhD? It's my last [rejection] I'm waiting for . . . how should I look for it? Thanks.

Yeah. I haven't heard anything from this school either--- I'm just waiting on it and UF. Grr.

I got my letter about a week and a half ago. I'm in but sans funding :(

Eh. I don't even care anymore if I got in or not. (Okay, I care a LITTLE, but not TOO much.) Now I just want an answer!

Temple accepts way more people than they can fund. They try to do the Berkeley thing, but they are no Berkeley.

As for their reputation, I don't really know. I know they've lost some people in recent years. When I looked at their website last year (in deciding whether or not to apply), I thought their course offerings looked rather thin.

I'm curious what you mean by this. Most programs (even top tier ones) generally accepts more people than they actually want in their cohort--sometimes twice, or three times as many. Granted, there are exceptions (especially in financially lean times when programs can't afford to have too many students accept...NYU and UPenn comes to mind for this year), but this seems to be the general rule.

I'm wondering too if more schools this year are accepting students without being able to fund them. Just from reading around on this website it seems like an awfully lot more people are accepted without funding than last year.

I also wonder if your chances are good to get funding for the second year of the program, if you decide to go.

I mean, I'm curious what do people do if they don't get an assistantship? I mean can you still adjunct in the English department? What are other options (or are there none)?

I was accepted for Temple's PhD Lit program yesterday by e-mail. The e-mail said that I should have already received a hard copy letter, but I didn't. The e-mail also said that it would be about two more weeks before they would decide about funding.
