  1. I've been working at a local Titanic Exhibition. Yeah, it really is THAT random.
  2. Hmm, okay. I did enroll for classes already though--- about 3 weeks ago, actually. I'll probably contact my loan providers soon and figure out when the deferral date is.
  3. Does anyone here know when our student loans will start being deferred because we'll be enrolled in school? I'm TECHNICALLY already enrolled after all!
  4. GAHH!!! You haven't watched it yet? LOST is also my reason for living. It's kind of sick.
  5. Yeah. yeah, I know. But it's a different kind of kissing ass: to respected professors, and not to irate customers who hate my exhibition and think I should die.
  6. ---I will NOT miss a long 40+ hour work week on my feet. While I know grad school will be a TON of work, it is the kind of work I enjoy--- a steady, comforting work, not a job that requires me to kiss peoples' asses on a regular basis. ---I will not miss the area I live in. I grew up here, and I'm really ready to leave and grow up a little bit. ---I will not miss having to answer the question: "So, what are you going to do with an English major? Teach?" Yes, I am, but at the college level and I will be a superstar professor, thank you very much! I will miss my family, a little bit. And free time! But, thankfully, LOST is ending before grad school, so that cuts out a lot of my TV time...
  7. Actually, I kind of thought the poster was representing "white people" as in the "Stuff White People Like" blog. It's not a racial thing at all, more of a cultural thing (you don't have to be white to be a "white person"!)
  8. I was wondering if anyone in this thread had tips for finding a realtor? I'm moving from Connecticut to Wisconsin and very, very clueless!
  9. Ooh, great topic! -I will be working for the next two months at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition (random, right?)--- which is really the perfect job for me! It's a temporary exhibition, so it ends on June 13th, so I won't have any messy two weeks notices to give or anything. I was also just promoted to a full time management position, so I should also be able to collect unemployment for a month or so before school starts. -I fully plan on being lazy. Read some crappy books, relax my mind... -And then I'm going to Disney World for a week! -...Followed by a trek from Connecticut to Milwaukee, WI to attend Marquette.
  10. So, my wonderfully supportive boyfriend is making the move from Connecticut to Milwaukee, Wisconsin so I can go to grad school. We graduated a year ago, and neither of us have been able to find spectacular jobs, so we're not leaving anything worthwhile behind. I am starting to wonder though: how soon should he start looking for a job? (His undergrad degree is in graphic design, so we're hoping he can find something in his field.) Any advice on how to do this? We're planning on starting a lease either July 15th or August 1st.
  11. I think UFL made all of their acceptance decisions already--- I emailed a couple weeks ago, and the secretary told me I had been rejected and the official letter would be coming "soon." Still haven't gotten it, but oh well!
  12. Ah yes. Good ol' Sharon is the one who called me Bridgette.
  13. hadunc, how did you find out--- email, letter, telepathy? I've already accepted another offer too (a MA, but it's fully funded!), but now I'm just curious.
  14. All right, so I haven't heard anything from Temple University yet. I don't think I've been accepted, and I'm actually fine with that. BUT, they've been pretty douchey to me over the application process. A few months ago, I got an email from them saying that one of my LoR writers hadn't submitted her letter yet. Perfectly normal, right? Well, they made two mistakes in this email. Firstly, they addressed me as "Bridgette" (as you might be able to guess from my clever username my name, indeed, is not Bridgette), and secondly, my professor HAD sent in her LoR. She had submitted it electronically, and when I logged onto my online application, I was able to see the date and time submitted. My recommender was also able to look at a PDF version of her letter through the system. She did re-send the letter for them, but was annoyed. And, well, seeing as it's a PhD program, they're supposed to let me know by April 15th if I'm in. It's April 4th, and I haven't heard a word! I've emailed two separate people asking when I will hear something, and I haven't received any sort of response. I know these people are busy, but for a $60 application fee, I could at least get a simple email that says "sometime soon," for god's sake! While I'm sure this means I haven't gotten in, I WOULD like to know. All right, end of that rant.
  15. got full funding!

  16. Hi there, Honestly, I think you should try everything you can to get funding at School A. Email the grad assistant office about any possible assistantships and the grad coordinator and ask about the TA waitlist and express your interest in the program. Email (or call!) everyone you can think of and try your hardest to get funding. BUT, if you don't get the funding--- I would go to School B. $60,000 is a LOT of money for a Master's degree and, as we know, we english majors aren't exactly ever going to be rolling in the dough! I was having similar worries (I really liked School A too!)-- but then my other choice, Marquette, offered me a TAship!
  17. Hey guys, was anyone here accepted to Marquette (with funding) and planning to turn it down? I'm high on the waitlist for full-funding, and the anticipation is killing me! Thanks.
  18. Sigh. I would have given my left foot to work with Carolyn Dever. Oh well. Maybe I'll apply again after I finish my MA.
  19. Eh. I don't even care anymore if I got in or not. (Okay, I care a LITTLE, but not TOO much.) Now I just want an answer!
  20. Hi Caitlin! Were you accepted to PhD or MA? (PhD, I assume?). I suppose I will see you there on Friday! ---Jackie
  21. Yeah. I haven't heard anything from this school either--- I'm just waiting on it and UF. Grr.
  22. Someone should REALLY decline an offer to Marquette University so I can get some funding. Please?!
  23. I got into the MA program at UNH about a month ago--- and I'm "waitlisted" for funding, whatever that means. Even if I don't get funding I might go (either there or URI, most likely) because I at least get cheaper tuition because I'm a NE resident. Anyone going to the admitted students day on April 2nd? I am!
  24. Well, so far I have been accepted to four master's programs and waitlisted at another. (I haven't updated my signature yet though, so just ignore it.) Anyway, I haven't received any funding at any of them... yet. BUT, at one school (Marquette), I am currently at the top of the waitlist for full-funding. The grad coordinator (who I have been in email contact with for a few weeks now) told me the other day that me receiving funding is still a "distinct possibility." So, basically, the purpose of this post is pretty much just to complain, whine, and freak out. Do you think my chances are good, oh Grad Cafe gods?
  25. I'm really hoping I don't need to come up with another Plan B this year, seeing as it's my second round of applications and I'm doing a limbo year at home. (Although, on a side note, my boyfriend's mom is really wealthy and we're living in a condo she owns and paying her little-to-nothing in rent, so I don't have to live with my parents! And we're getting a puppy, which is going to be a very welcome distraction.) But, anyway, my Plan B is probably to do some sort of Masters of Library Science program. Being a librarian pays decently enough, and I think I would be okay with that. Either that or get some sort of certification and become a teacher. I'm just working part time retail now, and I'm going completely crazy!
