ellieotter Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Hey guys, I've been having an internal debate about whether or not to spend money on a GRE prep course. I've taken it once before and did average on verbal, great on writing, but absolutely AWFUL on the quant section. I've used Magoosh & ETS prep books to attempt to study but I just feel I learn with an "in-person" environment where I can ask questions for problems I don't understand. My question is, has anyone taken a GRE prep course like this? Did it help? Or would you recommend a live-online prep class? I've done a little digging and see Kaplan offers some 8 week in person classes (pretty pricey, but worth it if it really helps) and I am considering doing one in hopes of boosting all of my scores. I really think that if the GRE is as important as many say it is for clinical/counseling psych apps, it will be the only thing that keeps me from getting interviews so I am desperate to fix this issue. Thanks!
Daitong Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Hi, I think it's useful to take an in-person course, the teacher's experience will help you identify where you need to put in more effort. This will save you so much time than just you alone keep reading the book. I am doing a free Meetup session to discuss GRE quant exam this Sunday. Feel free to come by, get more advice and further help. Here is my craigslist post: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/lss/5722106731.html Feel free to reach out! good luck, Daitong
ForensicPsych93 Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Everyone is different and what may work for others may not work for you. Im studying for the GRE as well and its very difficult watching the magoosh videos but I'm in college and i just can't afford the 1000 bucks for a kaplan in-person course. But I'm almost positive they offer a free trial class, I'd say attend that and see how well you learn. I rather spend on a tutor than a class just because if I'm paying that much, I would want individual attention, if this makes any sense. Currently, what I do is I downloaded Magoosh's schedule and printed it. I follow the schedule to the T, and knock out 10 videos a day. I miss some days so I try to watch 15 videos, etc. I feel like their are a lot of free resources. Im using course prep too, they have like hundreds of practice test that I also take everyday and get the hang of the exam. Also, theirs Khan Academy, mnemonics, Quizlet for verbal, etc. At your local library, they have many of the free GRE books that you can make copies from.
