SSN in rental application?

Hey guys,

I put my SSN(not the copy of the card, just the number) in rental application, at that time I didn`t think about leaving it just blank(dumb me) and now I`m concerned if it can be used in a bad way.

I mean can they anyhow damage me using my SSN ?

You don't really have the option of leaving it blank - they need some way to check your credit to approve your application. If you left it blank, they'd just ask you for it and then write it down for you.

Yes, in order to actually have a rental application complete, you will need to provide the SSN. Most of the advice against providing the SSN should be interpreted as not providing one until you are for sure interested in applying for that particular apartment (i.e. you are also submitting the credit check fee etc. if there is one)
