Jeewan Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Dear altruists, I am writing SOP for phd program in chemical engineering. I welcome any suggestions in the hookup statement. Any sample sentences are preferable. Thank you
Eigen Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I have no idea what you mean by a hookup statement. Can you clarify? Secondly, asking for sample sentences seems awfully close to plagiarism. Can you clarify your request?
hopefulPhD2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I'm afraid hookup means something else altogether my friend. I'll let you google examples of that word. ? I'm guessing you mean a hook, or an interesting starting sentence that "hooks" your reader, yes? I always struggle with my intro. As a writing teacher, I recommend writing a solid draft of your essay and then fine tuning your first few sentences to lead into your statement. Common "hooking" devices include using a quote, surprising fact, or a statistic.
fuzzylogician Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I would strongly advise against using a "hook" unless you are absolutely certain it works. And since you are soliciting advice online and asking for example sentences, I doubt that you have that certainty. In that case, it might be a much safer bet to start with something like your research interests - straight and to the point. (I generally almost never think hooks are a good idea; the quote/statistic/joke/fact don't teach me anything about you as a candidate, and that's what I'm reading the SOP for. Tell me about yourself, not about some random unrelated fact.)
hopefulPhD2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 @Jeewan I just found this thread http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/6541-sop-introductions/ It might be helpful to you
Jeewan Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 Thank you all for your suggestions. I was checking some sop ideas and everyone was talking about hooking up the reader. Yeah, its mainly the first paragraph which will urge the reader to go further.I think i can get something from the SOP introduction thread above .
