yourlocalsuperhero Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 so when i called last friday, the guy said, if you are not offered an interview "by now," it is "most likely" that you are rejected. I called again after reading your post, and this person said they require interviews for certain people who need additional infos from? I am confused. Does this mean that I still have hope for Y? The guy from friday sounded really sure though. Is Yale changing their words just to calm us down? I wonder.. We can only speculate, which I am told is godly ... They have a duty to be transparent and honest with us, and I doubt that they "change their story" as you suggest. It is in the realm of the possible, but I would not do that in their situation. I find the narrative that we have pieced together to be most likely: 1), the committee is in the process of reviewing, 2) a few applicants have been contacted because one or more members of the committee believe that they can make a more informed rating of the candidate with additional information, and 3) the committee will meet to throw our apps down the stairs at the end of the month. Besides the trust that I have for people to do the right thing and the reasonableness of this explanation, I believe that Stanford may follow a similar, logical system. 1st, some on this board report recent interviews. Second, i just contacted STANFORD. She said that (presumably all) decisions will be communicated by e-mail and mail by the 15th. That's this week, pretty much. It seems to follow a similar process to Yale, only two weeks earlier; you may recall that the application deadlines were approximately two weeks apart. Good luck! yourlocalsuperhero 1
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 UGH now im anxious. lol well i was anxious before too i guess. this process sucks. I just emailed Ned at Berkeley and he wrote back that the decisions are being finalized and they will start sending replies this/next week. I was feeling guilty mailing him - since am sure he is being bombarded with emails these days - but he replied immediately, like always! Good luck to you all (:
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 AWS, we are all in the same boat as far as stress levels are concerned - good luck to you! "Waiiiiting is the haaardest part!" (: Berk was my first app and hence, the least well-edited (=worst) although that school is my top choice. Ironies
jigmenorbu Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Yo this wait is killing me. Anyone get any nibbles from Princeton or Cornell? Anybody applied to the NYU Steinhardt interdisciplinary program in Media, Culture and Communication?
aboxofcarrots Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Yo this wait is killing me. Anyone get any nibbles from Princeton or Cornell? Anybody applied to the NYU Steinhardt interdisciplinary program in Media, Culture and Communication? I'm applying to Cornell n the NU prog too ) btw people i emailed Yale, and got a similar response: That information is incorrect. The anthropology department has not made their decisions yet as to who is being accepted into the program. Thank you, Gordon
vanishingpoint Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 A yes from UC Irvine! Huzzah! yourlocalsuperhero 1
a fragrant plant Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 A yes from UC Irvine! Huzzah! Congratulations! I've also applied to Irvine so I'm really nervous now! Is the email notification from potential advisor or graduate director? Thanks! a fragrant plant and anthroboy2010 2
Gigsed Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Congratulations! I've also applied to Irvine so I'm really nervous now! Is the email notification from potential advisor or graduate director? Thanks! I can't speak for the others but mine was from Leo Chavez, the DGS.
vanishingpoint Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) I can't speak for the others but mine was from Leo Chavez, the DGS. Mine as well. Gigsed, are you planning on attending the visit weekend? Edited February 10, 2010 by vanishingpoint
Gigsed Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Mine as well. Gigsed, are you planning on attending the visit weekend? I dunno mate I am thinking I will have to have a long hard think on it. On the one hand it's a bloody long way to travel from Ireland and despite their very generous offer to pay $400 or so it's going to set me back at least £350 rtn to get from London to LA and more than a couple hundred US to get to London. On the other I don't like the idea of attending a school without sussing it out and meeting the faculty. So to after that long winded exposition I suppose the answer is I really don't know. I figure I've at least till we receive formal notification to make up my mind. But never mind my whinging and wailing what about yourself?

Hi, are you an internationa? were you given funding from UCI? UCI was one of my top-choices..but i ended up not applying any of the UCs because of the economic crisis.. just curious.. CONGRATULATIONS!
coyabean Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 FYI re: Duke. In response to my "hey! i got a competitive offer so whatchu gonna do" email I got a "you are not on our short list so bite it" response. So there is a finalist list of the 149 applicants. No word on notification however. Good luck.
Gigsed Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Hi, are you an internationa? were you given funding from UCI? UCI was one of my top-choices..but i ended up not applying any of the UCs because of the economic crisis.. just curious.. CONGRATULATIONS! Hey thanks. In answer to your questions:- 1/ Yes, I am an international applicant. 2/They said info about funding was to follow. So I don't know how much or for how long. 3/Yes, that concerned me as well so I emailed Director Chavez before I applied to the program and he said yes they were in severe financial turmoil but that they had some limited spaces for internationals so mulled it over and applied anyway.
jigmenorbu Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Let's get the details on this Cornell acceptance please!
jigmenorbu Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 As in, what subject, I don't know, what prof.s.
sohbetocean Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Let's hope it's a sign that the flood gates for Anthropology decisions have been opened....*crossing my finger* I just hope the gates aren't currently frozen shut as I'm wondering if snowmaggedon might cause delays for some of us....At least, I await notification in sunny conditions (75 degrees and rising). Of course, I'd be happy to change climates next winter in the pursuit of doctoral studies. Regarding posting decisions--if anyone receives news on funding, don't hold out!
far_to_go Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Hey folks! I applied to UCI and, while I have not received any info from the DGS or admissions office, have received several e-mails from the financial aid department encouraging me to log on and make sure that all my finaid documents are in order (they are- I sent in my FAFSA). Anyone else in the same boat? I'm guessing that I wasn't accepted because other ppl have heard from the DGS by now, but if I'm rejected then why is the finaid office bothering to e-mail me? I'm guessing there's just slow communication between departments... Also, anyone planning on going to the UVa visit weekend on Feb 19-20? I'll be there and it would be fun to meet you, my fellow sharers in the suffering of app agony...
denim_pocket Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Did everyone applying to U of Chicago get the e-mail from the Division of Social Sciences?
vanishingpoint Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Did everyone applying to U of Chicago get the e-mail from the Division of Social Sciences? denim_pocket: Yes, I did. The results board makes it sound like sociology and history applicants received the same message. Gigsed: Yes, I think I'll try to make the trip out to Irvine, although I won't be traveling from anywhere near the distance that you will. My reservations about the program mostly revolve around whether or not I could see myself living in Orange County, California, and so I figure that it makes sense to go out there and see for myself. Would Irvine be one of your first choices?
Gigsed Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Gigsed: Yes, I think I'll try to make the trip out to Irvine, although I won't be traveling from anywhere near the distance that you will. My reservations about the program mostly revolve around whether or not I could see myself living in Orange County, California, and so I figure that it makes sense to go out there and see for myself. Would Irvine be one of your first choices? Well my current ranking system, based purely on 'fit' mind, is like this:- Tier One (in no particular order ):- Irvine, UMich, Brown, Rutgers Tier Two (ditto):- Austin, NYU Tier Three (ditto):- Boston Uni, UIUC Tier Four:- Northwestern The short answer is yes Irvine is one of my top choices on the basis of fit but I haven't really considered academic reputation, placement rate or lifestyle yet (by the way did you receive a long email from Bill Maurer and a shorter one from Tom Boellstorff as well). On the last score I've heard some pretty negative things about Irvine's public transport which as someone who refuses to drive and likes to walk/take PT everywhere are quite concerning. Returning to your original question I will probably take up the department offer to go and see Irvine. However, I am going to hold off making a decision until next week when hopefully I've heard back from a few more schools. Then if I am lucky enough to receive another acceptance I can take one trip as opposed to having to fly over the Atlantic more than once in the space of weeks. Edited February 12, 2010 by Gigsed
littlepeach09 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 ok... I promised myself I wasn't going to do this but has anyone heard anything from Stanford yet? I read an earlier post that they are supposed to send out their decisions by the 15th, and have been checking my email constantly since. anyone?
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Gigsed, I moved to Irvine around 3-4 months ago. The PT thing is SO TRUE. I, too, am a completely walking/biking kinda person so it has been hard to adjust to always having to drive ( a lot of which is on highways- ugh). The area has a lot of great biking trails but biking is more of a leisure thing here than getting around since distances are pretty long. Having said that, the campus area is nice and I have seen a lot of students biking around there. Student housing, at least from the outside, looks pretty good and there are quite a few grocery and eating options within the campus. I have been to the UCI library a few times and its pretty okay. As for reputation, UCI Anthro is really one of the up and coming departments in the US. My professors at UPenn all said this same thing when I was moving out here and wanted to know about the department. The weather is absolutely lovely here all year round - as you MUST have heard already. This also means relatively low living costs as far as heating and electricity bills are concerned but of course, this is one of the most expensive areas to live in otherwise (high sales tax, not many cheap eating options although enough to survive, transportation costs etc). That is my general impression of the city so far. Congrats on being accepted and good luck with the rest of the schools! (: Edited February 12, 2010 by Ibn Anthropology
Nina Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 i seriously can't take this anymore. I want to take a sleeping pill until march so that i wouldn't have to suffer through this waiting period. i hate it!!!

(: Dear Ibn Anthropology Thanks for the overview of Irvine; it is so much more positive than the accounts in the city guide section. I have to say I've only heard good things about the department itself. The weather factor is interesting. My entire family are basically in favour of me accepting simply on the basis that it gives them the excuse to visit and enjoy the warm weather. The expenses thing is good to know but I suspect that it will take me a while to regard anything in America as expensive on my past visits to North America everything has always appeared relatively inexpensive compared to the UK in particular and Europe in general. Good luck with you apps (your applying to Rutgers as well right?)
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 ha i totally understand what you mean. i feel like i see people posting for all the schools i applied to but for NONE of the anthro programs! torture i seriously can't take this anymore. I want to take a sleeping pill until march so that i wouldn't have to suffer through this waiting period. i hate it!!!
