kayyyyy_ Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I was talking to a friend yesterday and was SUPER curious about a general waitlist question and hoping someone could clear it up. What happens if you get waitlisted at your top choice school? You obviously accept the waitlist position. You then get accepted to another school and have to decide before the April 15th if you're going to the school you've been accepted to. So then what if you get pulled off the waitlist to your #1 choice after you've committed.. What do you do then? Would it be super unethical to decline to spot you accepted and accept the spot at your number 1 choice.
SpeechLaedy Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I've heard people receiving extensions from the schools they've been accepted to for that reason. I guess some schools use their discretion if you notify them of such a dilemma and may give you some sort of extension. Now if it gets close to the second extended deadline and the waitlist school still hasn't said anything... that might be tricky
Callen Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I have a feeling I'm going to be in this boat because I was waitlisted at University of Oregon, which is definitely one of (if not my top) my top choices.
Speechster Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 I think its common for people to commit and then rescind it to go to their top program. Auuudriana 1
kayyyyy_ Posted February 19, 2017 Author Posted February 19, 2017 What if you have to do a deposit or attend an open house? Should you go?

thespeechblog.com Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 The kind of situation happens frequently. Sometimes when you commit to a school you have to pay a deposit. If you then decide not to attend after all (because you now want to go to your #1 choice), you forfeit that deposit. Even if the school has no deposit, definitely just notify the school ASAP about your decision - there are a lot of other people waiting and making big life decisions based on that acceptance spot. I don't think it is a matter of ethics.
