Hi, does anyone have any info on CSU Northridge as far as acceptance rate and average GRE score? They are not on Edfind and I can't seem to find anything on the department webpage! I am considering applying in the spring but I want to know how competitive it is/if I would be wasting my time. Thanks in advance :)

It's about as competitive as many other California schools! I remember seeing a document on their site with a lot of their admissions stats and such but now i can't seem to find it! :/

I had a chance to talk with some of the students in my school's grad program who applied last year and according to them Northridge is pretty good at looking at the "whole" applicant--i.e., having lower GRE scores/a low GPA won't get your application thrown away. That can be very helpful if you have strong LORs and work/volunteer experiences.

However, the program has some downsides that you should be aware of. First off, they're extremely picky about prereqs, so even if you have a bachelor's degree in ComDis they still may require you to take prereq classes because they feel you haven't done the work THEIR classes require. That can add an extra semester or two of time and money, and it's very common for students to graduate in 2 /12-3 years rather than 2!

Hi, I did my undergrad at CSUN, and was accepted to their residential grad program (I am going elsewhere though).  As the previous poster stated, they are very picky about which prerequisites they prefer you to have.  They say to shoot for at least a 300 total with GRE, and a 4 or above is preferable for the writing portion.  They do look at the whole student, but if they only see a few of their specific prerequisites then they aren't as inclined to admit students (or if you are admitted then you do have to take the undergrad classes they feel you're lacking).  It is just about as competitive as other CSU schools, but maybe just a bit less so.  They also have a distance ed program that might be even less competitive if you are interested in that.  Good luck!!  Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions about their program.

Thanks guys! I assumed it was competitive considering it's a CSU and in LA :/ However, I'm a CA resident (I'll be getting my bachelors from CSUS in the spring) and don't really want to pay out of state tuition or for a private CA school. My CSAD GPA is high (4.0) and overall GPA is about 3.89 but my GRE was lower than I expected 152/146/4.0 so I am looking to apply to 5 schools but other than CSUS, Fresno State, and SJSU I'm not sure where else to apply! I don't think I would be comfortable taking up to 3 years to graduate.. I will definitely take this all into consideration!

Unsure about CSU Northridge, but SF state gets fewer applications in general because of their earlier deadline. Out of the 3 CA schools that I applied to last year, I only got an interview with them last application season.  I'm currently enrolled out of state at a school that doesn't charge out of state tuition. Good luck!

CSUN online is one of the most competitive distance ed programs out there. There are so few distance ed programs and many of the ones that do exist require time on campus or don't accept CA residents. CSUN online also guarantees admission to 100% of their post-bacc students who finish the program with a 4.0 so there's just that many fewer slots for everyone else.
