notyourmama
Anthropolitan (fabulous username!), I received an email from the professor that wants to work with me. I'll get a formal acceptance letter in the mail, at some point. Okay. I'm gonna quit stressing about Florida. Letters next week. It's nice to actually have an idea of when to expect news. nurye27
I see someone got in at Berkeley. Congrats! Based on the fact that I haven't heard anything from them, I guess I didn't make it. Well, that makes 2 rejections so far and 9 more schools to go!
pleasegodletmein
i wouldn't give up all hope on berkeley- at least i'm not, yet. looks like the accepted person got a personal email from a prof, right? maybe they just haven't gotten around to emailing you yet. my girlfriend got her acceptance to one school first via automated email, then via a letter, and finally a professor emailed her saying her acceptance letter was on the way. so, i don't think things always go in the same order. notyourmama
I'm trying hard to stay in the 'it's not over until it's over' mindset. I got totally fraught about Florida (because I thought I had a really good chance there) after someone posted, and I'm going to try not to do that again. My poor partner...gets to experience the rollercoaster of me being SURE I'll hear from X school TODAY, and then the crash when I don't. And my first choice school had an application date of February 2nd, so I'm in for the long haul. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all meet in some physical place for coffee? So we could micro analyze possible outcomes without boring or freaking out all the people in our lives that don't understand?

So we could micro analyze possible outcomes without boring or freaking out all the people in our lives that don't understand? yes, that would be wonderful. i can't talk to anyone at work b/c they don't know i've applied. fortunately, my partner also applied to grad school this year so we're freaking out together. but it's twice as stressful b/c we need to get in in the same city. she's already in somewhere, and so far i've got one rejection and 11 unknowns. i used to be so laid back, and now... i think i've got ulcers. any word on univ of washington or ucsb? these schools started notifying this week last year. canwaitnomore
For those applying to Harvard Social Anthro... any news? Are we supposed to hear by the end of this month? By email, letter, fax, phone...? Please, talk to me... I am going crazy. :-)
nervouswreck
Sorry (if any one missed me, that is!) for not replying for a along time. ...was busy nursing my broken heart... Yes, one rejection is good enough to send u to the pits of eternal pain. Haven't heard from the rest yet. For the people who asked, got an informal email about the rejection from univ f florida. U guys should be hearing from them soon too. Yhey have sent out letters apparently. All the best to the rest who applied there! ^No idea when one gets to hear from Harvard, but - i know this won't make a diff, but here it goes anyway - relax and be patient(!). Yeah, i got a few friends who applied to graduate schools too for Fall '08. They all happen to be from different far-away states, so my phone bill comes up to quite a massive amount! They are the only ones who can truly empathise! nailbitingnmiserable
I don't know what to do. I'm going to India next week, and will be away from my cell till March 8th and my mailbox till March 11th. I'm hoping to at least have access to my email, but what should I do? Do I contact the programs before I go, and let them know my situation, or do I just sit hope they don't think I'm ignoring their phone calls (if they call at all that is)? Well, that makes 2 rejections so far and 9 more schools to go! Hiya, I'm new to the forum and I applied to UC Berkeley for the Phd in sociocultural anthropology as well. I haven't heard from them since I sent in all the supporting docs in Dec. Maybe one professor is particularly interested in that applicant's research topic, so he/she hears from them earlier than us? I'm thinking of giving them a call next week if I see more offers reported. Do they always send rejection emails in the end after admission emails? It would be so heartrending in that case! :x :x
keepcalm
Hey guys! I heard back from my first school today and I've been accepted at Wisconsin! This is really exciting since I was getting pretty nervous and acting pretty ridiculous about the whole grad school thing. Here's hoping for a positive response from Florida later in the week! pleasegodletmein
congratulations keepcalm! you are awesome! Do they always send rejection emails in the end after admission emails? my understanding is that they send letters out to the rejected people, and that happened last year at the end of feb. i'm not sure they actually email everyone who was admitted. they might mail some of those peeps too (hopefully that'll include me...) pleasegodletmein
you guys should check out the history people- they're freaking out on each other now. it seems like the anthro folk are a little nicer, and for that i'm really glad. also, we are not using words like "ostensibly," for the most part, on this forum. there's no need to be pedantic, for god's sake. anyway, it just makes me feel like if i actually get into academia, i'll have a friendlier group of collegues! so thanks. keepcalm
That's weird. I love this forum because I'm actually talking to people who know what I'm going through. It's really nice to be able to identify with other people, as I feel like my friends are having either completely different experiences or have no idea what I'm talking about. I hope we all get into great schools!
heythereman
Hey guys! I heard back from my first school today and I've been accepted at Wisconsin! This is really exciting since I was getting pretty nervous and acting pretty ridiculous about the whole grad school thing. Here's hoping for a positive response from Florida later in the week! Yay keepcalm!! I got into Wisconsin too-- go Badgers! How does it rate on your list? It's not my top choice, but I really like the faculty there and Madison seems like a fun place to be (or so my midwestern friends tell me). I haven't heard from Berkeley at all. I think they will notify soon, but that person who posted didn't seem like he/she got an official letter, just a note that prefigures the actual acceptance. BTW, the Berkeley online app system seems pretty sucky. My recommenders reported having trouble uploading their letters, and I had to get one of my profs to fax hers over. Fingers crossed for everyone here. I think the real crunch time is like this week on to early-mid March. In the meantime, I'm crashing out, relaxing, and watching episodes of The Wire endlessly. If anyone's seen that show, the depiction of abject poverty and crime really puts "grad school anxiety" into perspective. Funny that I'm so stressed these days that bleak TV shows about inner-city Baltimore seem like "escapism." 8) I'm glad this forum at least is relatively chill and that nobody's whipped out the GPA/GREs to compare sizes, if you know what I mean. Here's to hoping we'll all be doing what we love soon enough!

My recommenders reported having trouble uploading their letters, and I had to get one of my profs to fax hers over. Fingers crossed for everyone here. I think the real crunch time is like this week on to early-mid March. You can say that again. The online system is not very user-friendly , especially you've to copy and paste something from a txt doc rather than uploading a word or pdf doc. The online recommendation system was under maintenance some time in November, so I had to sent in all paper recommendations. I never succeeded in reaching the department contact person by phone. :x Oh well, as I know they'll notify applicants first via email then by letter, so hopefully we can all hear from them shortly! nervouswreck
Hey! Congrats to all who got in! Hope the rest of us hear soon too. Nailbiter, am from India. Rest assured that there is a cyber cafe after every 200 meters of any city you go to, so checking mail will not be a problem at all. u can get a sim card here and divert your calls to the new number or you can also ask someone home to answer your calls and instruct them how to reach you. So don't worry! And GOD!! Some school mail me! FAST!

I'm kind of in the same boat, it's not my top choice but it's still pretty amazing. I'm conflicted because the professor they have there with my research interest would be fantastic to work with but is older and anthro PhDs take a long time. I have also heard that Madison is really fun and that makes it more attractive but I'll have to wait till I hear back from other schools before I can even come close to making a decision. heythereman
Got an email today saying I'm in at Cornell, with funding. Whee! It was an email from the director of graduate studies, with official offer to follow. They also offered a chance to visit the campus in March... but that's the same weekend I've planned to go to Florida with friends! Yikes. I'm intrigued by the rejection notice from Berkeley posted in the Results section today. Anyone else heard anything from them? I wonder if they're informing rejected applicants before accepted ones? pleasegodletmein
congratulations on cornell! you're awesome! don't know what's up with berkeley myself- it seems weird of them to notify people who aren't in first- maybe that person emailed them to check status? blakkbug
Hey notyourmama--I'm applying to Tulane for the fall as well. I'm at LSU finishing up my MA right now, and I've heard through the grapevine that they'll begin reviewing applications on Friday. Hopefully that means letters will be coming soon! I'm so sick of waiting...

blakkbug
Hey blakkbug, what's the combined Geog & Anthro dept at LSU like? Did you have a good experience doing your master's there? Rising Sun--I've really enjoyed it, actually. I wasn't so sure at first, but it's so unique, and I have to say that I loved not being combined with Sociology. Not that Sociology isn't great, just not really my cup o tea... I'm actually kind of sad now that I'm going to be done in a couple of months. I feel like I just got here! Another reason why Tulane is so appealing, I supposed (well, and Mardi Gras holiday!)
blakkbug
Congrats to everyone who is getting acceptance letters already! My list of schools is: University of Arizona Johns Hopkins SUNY Stony Brook Tulane WUSTL I thought I applied to UT Austin, too, but can't find any confirmation emails. Whoops! Oh well... Anyone doing functional anatomy stuff? I started off in forensic anthro, but couldn't handle the scene and my interests totally changed during my first year of grad school!
