To add my experience here...

I was rejected from UTexas PhD on Wednesday by the website and Syracuse PhD by post. I'm really sad because Syracuse was one of my bottom choices. I don't think this means good things for my other apps. I had several reach schools I don't expect to get into, and then Stony Brook IDPAS, for which the results pages has two entries, a week and a half ago. I am really upset because Stony was my top choice for several reasons. I am archaeology.

Being rejected from a bottom choice doesn't really say anything about your chances at other schools. A lot of it really is about fit.

Well, the weekend is past and I haven't heard anything from Florida. My mom called me several times this weekend for various things and each time I got all excited but alas, no news. Oh well there is always tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone for this week! Hopefully we'll all get some good news!

That's really a good point, and it is nice to hear from a stranger, but when I try to tell myself that it still hurts. Oh well. I wasn't counting on Texas because of their really low out of state acceptance. We'll see. It is sooo hard to wait for the rest!

I broke down and called Stony Brook today. She said they are reviewing this week and people should hear by next week. Someone posted on the board that they heard two weeks ago, and that worries me, but they heard two weeks after the deadline. That would be quick. I don't know. So NERVOUS!

Hmmn. There's no change on the website for UT, for me. I wonder what that means? Maybe they're doing multiple cuts?

This is the 'check status' page, right?

Possibly. Are you in or out of state? That also might make a difference. I saw the status check page. They changed the part where it was like we've recived your app to we don't want you. It's ok. I'll be fine.

Sometimes schools do a quick review of applicants to identify those that they would nominate for fellowships. Often the university deadlines for nominations are early to mid-February. So they have to decide very quickly on some offers of admission so they have candidates to nominate for these fellowships. After that's done, they meet to do a more complete review of all the applications. That may explain why some acceptances come out crazy early and others a bit later.

I was one of the people who posted on the 5th. I'm not sure why I got in so early (not complaining), I'm guessing my prospective advisor had a hand in it though, since I also got into SB's Ecology and Evolution department, also really early. I didn't know a thing about my IDPAS acceptance until I got the package in the mail.

Now I get to wring my hands about NYU (no interview invite...), Massachusetts-Amherst, Colorado-Boulder, Columbia, and Oxford. And try not to imagine creative ways to strangle one of my boyfriend's recommenders who didn't get letters into (dun dun dun) Stony Brook and Maryland.

By the way, good luck!

Wow youe so lucky. Stony Brook is my top choice, even though I applied to "harder" schools. I called and the woman seemed annoyed and I was like I was wondering when you're sending out decisions. She was like your name? I said my name and she was like their reviewing this week. A week. They should have it. I feel like why did she ask my name? Because I'm not in! I'll be so sad. It is OK. My undergrad adviser said academia is all about rejection and it will be fine. Thanks..I guess? I'm not worrying. What happens will happen.

Did you talk to the graduate secretary? She seemed really annoyed with me when I talked to her too. Annoyed and grumpy and not terribly helpful. It's actually kind of off-putting, which is a shame because it's a great program. What's your field in anth?

Well, I'm archaeology. I am a little different than the major evolution and physical foscus in the department. I applied because I am really interdisciplinary, and their program does fit. I don't know. We'll see. The woman was annoying. One of my advisers handed in their rec late because he got tied up doing reearch in Germany in the feild, and when I spoke to her months ago (nto telling her my name) she was like "can he fax someting or email something? even a pargraph about you."

I tried explaining that he had limited phone adn computer access because he was in a remote area there, and she was not getting it. nthropologists being in remote areas without daily computers? Who'd of thought? Finally she said the end of the week was fine. At least we wasn't in his normal field area - Papua New Guinea. He got it out by the end of that week.

I suppose they must get many calls like that though. I'm a receptionist, and I know I get annoyed answering the same bland questions over and over again.

To update my experience here: Emailed the program director of NYU Anth today, and he replied with " I do regret to inform you...." Well, as expected, there are 450 applicants this year and only 7 offers will be made. They haven't sent out any rejections yet, but they do have had a short list which nominates 15 people for 7 openings.

So basically, if we haven't heard we aren't in. I guess it isn't surprising. Rejection is rejection. We'll be OK.

so no NYU then... i think i was completely off my rocker when i decided which schools to apply to. i must have a very high opinion of myself. i hope it won't destroy me in the end. in the meantime, time drips by- barely. this is absolutely horrible. i tried to tell myself, this morning, that it was my decision to freak out and get anxious and that i wasn't going to anymore, but i have now decided that i have no choice. actually, it's the same battle every day. one rejection so far, one probable rejection, still waiting on 10 of the best schools in the world. shit.
