Has anyone heard from them? If so, for what degree?

(sorry for the typo in the topic title)

Word is the decisions have been made by the committee and sent to the admissions office to process. Somebody on another forum called to update their publication list and was told decisions were final and the admissions office would be contacting everybody within the next couple weeks.

I applied there, too. I don't really know too much about the department, though. Would you be so kind as to just write a few words what you see as the strenghts of the SHDH at Harvard? Do you happen to know anyone's experience who actually did their PhD there? From my side, social epidemiology work that is being done in the department is the one thing I find the most appealing.

Thanks

According to other forums, the admissions office said decisions for SHDH will be sent out tomorrow (Friday 2/26). They won't give out decisions over the phone, but hey--it's less than a day now.

If social epi is your interest, I think the department speaks for itself. The Chair of the dept (Kawachi) edited the most used (and cited) social epi textbook. Berkman is a professor there. And there are other seminal professors in the field. However, the greatest appeal for me is that it's Harvard. Not the name itself, but if I want to take a health policy course, I can take it at Kennedy. If I want to take an advanced stats course, I can take it in the applied math department. Etc. Allowing cross-registration with some of the best professors in each field is a huge plus for me.

Decisions tomorrow?? Awesome! Do you know how they're notifying applicants? Email, phone, regular mail?

They'll send you two emails. One with a username and one with a password and they'll forward you to a website (Oasis) and you check it on the website. As far as funding, some people have said they've reached out to a few people, but most people won't know until March.

Good luck everybody.

Congrats on Hopkins! Hopkins would have been my number one choice. I really enjoyed the campus and meeting the professors there.

It's about halfway through the workday here and still no word from Harvard. I'm tempted to just call them and see if they really are sending out letters today.

Yes, congrats on Hopkins!

I'm dying here waiting for Harvard's email...

Hey guys,

I had applied to the Doctor of Science in the SHDH Department at Harvard, and I just (about an hour ago) received an email that I was accepted to the M.S. program. So I guess they are sending some responses. I'm a little disappointed but I'm glad that they accepted me to the M.S. rather than just rejecting me (I only have a B.A.).

I've been accepted to a Ph.D. program with very generous funding at University of Minnesota, but I'm really on the edge of my seat about Johns Hopkins (Health, Behavior and Society), which is far and away my first choice. I spoke to the academic coordinator on the phone about a week and a half ago, and she said that decisions would be out by the end of this week (i.e. yesterday), but I haven't heard anything. Has anyone else?

Also waiting to hear from UW and Columbia (sociomedical sciences).

Congrats on your Minnesota and Harvard acceptance -- even though Harvard is for another degree. Still nice to hear from them. I have yet to get an email from SHDH.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for Johns Hopkins for you and I'm still waiting to hear from Columbia Sociomedical too. In another forum, someone said they spoke to the admissions office and that the dept would start hopefully notifying applicants March 1st.

Hi all--I received an email of acceptance for the SD in SHDH this afternoon. I am also really eager to hear from Hopkins and the SMS program at Columbia. I got really impatient about 2 weeks ago and emailed the coordinators at both programs...they both said they should be sending out notifications in "a couple weeks." Not so helpful!

congratulations!

I still haven't heard anything but I got an email from the financial aid office confirming my eligibility for a scholarship -- not that I received the scholarship but just to double check that I even qualify for it. I don't know what that means in terms of getting into Harvard or not.
