  1. Looks like my reviewers couldn't agree on intellectual merit: E/VG G/VG VG/VG Comments were pretty constructive overall. It look like I need to be more explicit about the significance of the questions I'm trying to get at.
  2. Went to bed and woke up again. Looks like I at least got an honorable mention! It's not an award but it's something. Seems I went to undergrad with two of the people who did get it for my category though which is a bit crazy.
  3. Another Minnesotan here. Grew up outside of Minneapolis. Went to undergrad in New York. Back to Minnesota for grad school. Fingers and toes crossed for everyone here!
  4. I'd say that this depends on your department, but in my experience tattoos and piercings are not that big of a deal. From what my current advisers tells me, one of my professors from undergrad has been walking around like this (plus visible tattoos) since his grad days at Harvard of all places. The TAs I know who have tattoos cover up while teaching, but this is more of a result of dressing well than anything else. Dress shirts are more professional than t-shirts no matter what you've got going on underneath. I'd play it by ear, but I don't think you have any need to be especially concerned.
  5. You're not alone in this situation at all. Don't feel cheated. I know several really amazing people that weren't offered funding at their first choice because the school simply didn't have any money. That said, it's hard to give solid advice without more information. May I ask what school you're referring to? (feel free to PM me if you feel more comfortable) I'm doing Paleolithic archaeology but have some familiarity with physical programs. Personally, I wouldn't worry about getting a job 5-8 years down the road as much as I would worry about carrying a substantial debt burden. If you already have enough money saved up for one year that's amazing. If your potential adviser and the program overall have a really good reputation, I'd probably go for it, especially if you are likely to get funding after your first year. Also, have you been in contact with your profs from undergrad? You could probably use their advice right about now.
  6. I have a friend who I believe has been offered admission. She has Canadian citizenship though. Maybe they're just getting around to international applicants?
  7. Hi phusion, In my opinion, it definitely wouldn't hurt. May I ask what kind of archaeology you're interested in? Methods can vary a lot depending on time period / region. It's my understanding that the quality field schools is extremely inconsistent. Some are absolutely amazing and will teach you the fundamentals, others just want your money. Personally, I'd lean towards field schools set up by accredited universities or research institutions. Your other option is to try and find a dig with a good reputation that is willing to accept students but is technically not a field school. You'll get less classroom-like instruction and no credits, but will learn tons. I've never officially been to field school but have had no one question my knowledge or abilities. Best of luck!
  8. Hi there, I'll be starting the Phd anthropology program (focus in archaeology) this falll. I wouldn't worry too much about the weather. Invest in some good outerwear and you'll be fine. It almost never get as cold as -20 and when it is that cold it tends to be very dry which makes things more manageable. Unfortunately as Str2T said public transportation isn't that great, especially compared to a city with a metro system like London. I'm probably going to try and live off the bus line close to campus and go without a car my first year. Granted, my parents still live in the burbs so if I need a vehicle I can borrow one easily. My favorite part of the city if probably Uptown. It's full of restaurants, bars, etc and has a great atmosphere. I'm probably going to try and find an apartment in the area since it also happens to be near the lakes which are great in the warmer months. Rent is going to be much lower then what you're paying in London. I'm guessing you can easily find a place for $700 or less a month depending on what you're looking for.
  9. I'm not sure if this is good or bad news, but I do know one person who was admitted and will be attending.
  10. Anybody else attending? Also, I did my undergrad in New York, but am a native Minneapolitan so if you've got any questions, ask away!
  11. Congrats Indianacat! I went to NYU for undergrad (although my focus was archaeology) so feel free to PM me if you've got any questions. Anyone else as well! Fingers crossed for everyone!
  12. From what I understand, archaeology at least has a short list. A friend of mine got a call last week from a potential adviser asking if accepted, if he would attend. My guess is people are going to start hearing back within the next week or two. Not sure about Bio or Cultural though.
  13. Well, it's pretty much official at this point, I'm going to Minnesota! It's been my first choice for a while and has the most resources of any place I was looking at so after talking to a few of my undergrad professors I decided it wasn't worth it to send in my other apps. I don't know anything about the cultural program yourlocalsuperhero, but in terms of archaeology they have several faculty that I'm interested working with interesting projects and great facilities. I probably won't be able to make the admitted student's weekend since I'm going to be studying abroad in Belgium, but I suppose there's a chance I'll see you around later vanishingpoint.
  14. Well, perhaps I spoke too soon. I just got an email from a professor at Minnesota, and I've also been accepted and nominated for a fellowship! As I said before, it's my top choice so I'm ecstatic! Fingers and toes crossed for everyone! Here's hoping for more good news!
  15. Congrats vanishingpoint! I must admit though, since Minnesota is my top choice you've officially made me sweat a little! Oh, and indianacat, I'd be up for talking about aurignacian points any day! Time to go finish the other two applications I've been neglecting...
