  1. (this was cross posted on SDN sorry!) A lot of these acceptances and such won't go out until Feb and I believe most admitted student days aren't until March/April so if you haven't heard anything at this point don't worry. Many schools don't start reviewing applications until after the new year which is annoying. Schools have ranges of time lines for various reasons so just because school X told someone in January that they were admitted doesn't mean that you have been rejected from school Y (or school X for that matter). At this point its easy to get anxious about the process but just trust that you put together a strong application, distract yourself and don't stare at your inbox all day. But if anyone has any questions about interviews/admitted student days feel free to ask--I'm in the first year of my PhD program so the memories are pretty fresh!
  2. Hey there, I don't think you should be discouraged. If you search this Public Health forum there are a few tales of people getting in with low GPAs with tips and suggestions, as well as the sub-3.0 thread in the GradCafe Forum is helpful. I graduated college with a 2.8 GPA and completed my MPH at Berkeley and will be starting a PhD program this fall so its definitely not impossible to get in and excel. Its most important to not take yourself out of the game and understand that it may take you more than one application cycle to get in and that if you want an MPH you should apply broadly--there are a lot of really good programs outside of the "top 10" and fit is really important. You have to highlight your strong points and make sure that your LoR are strong and written by people who know you well and can really speak to your abilities. Getting a generic "this person is great" letter from a well-known person won't be super helpful for you. You should also include some info about why your GPA is lower and that you are confident in your ability to succeed etc.

Anyone looking for roommate or have a lead on finding housing? Feel free to message me, I'll be an entering PhD student in the school of public health. I am planning to go to LA in August to find a place to move into either Sept 1 or Sept 15th.

look for a roommate(s) as well, I think I at least for the first year I'd want to be closer to campus am thinking Palms area maybe?
  5. I thought I would revive the UCLA thread. I'll be attending for a PhD in Community Health Sciences (in the School of Public Health) any other incoming Bruins?
  6. Thats a tough situation Sryahmay. Can you ask the DGS at the school you've been unofficially accepted at for when they think they might hear? It seems most likely that everything will go through just fine and they can't tell you definitively because this is kind of out of their hands...hopefully it will only take a couple days to get an official acceptance. Any other thoughts?
  7. It may be a stipulation of your funding to work with a professor for x number of hours, it really just depends but they would give you this information upon admission
  8. I got into my schools off the wait list today with funding!! I'm so excited I can't believe it. Fingers crossed everyone!!!
  9. I'd say B only because of the money but if School A is giving you enough money for tuition/living stipend then I'd say go there because it seems like a better fit for you
  10. Yea I'd agree. I think that they wait until the 15th and make decisions, some programs probably make decisions that day to try and fill their cohorts and for others there is probably some lag time for the admissions committee to get back together and select the next round etc. They may also have to wait a couple days for people accepting their offers via snail mail. I'm sure some people either forget to or don't bother to decline their offers, but I'm pretty sure if a school doesn't hear from an accepted applicant they either assume they don't want to come and/or contact them to follow up. Since the 15th is on a monday it could definitely be worth it to follow up with your school by Wednesday or Thursday and inquire if they think they will be using the wait list, time line and what that process is like. so close everyone!!
  11. ah got it thats tricky. I think it can really be what you make it. If you go into the program knowing you want to try for a PhD afterwards that would definitely put you a step ahead. It may not be the ideal but I think it could still lead towards a positive outcome.. I hope it works out for you
  12. sorry to hear that Ruby, looks like you've got some acceptances though! but rejection never feels good. Good luck everyone April 15th is just around the corner!
  13. There is no real way to know that. The person may have responded to the academic coordinator of the department and not to the POI directly for some reason. I got into a program but wasn't actually told who my advisor was immediately, but I did get a nice personal acceptance letter from the AC and have mostly been in touch with her mainly because I've needed to get logistical things sorted out, something similar could be happening here. But it sounds like the person isn't super invested if they haven't taken the time to email back--fingers crossed it works out for you!
  14. You could either send the prospectus and put a cover letter on it saying its a draft but I think the better option would be to send nothing--if its optional I doubt it would make or break your application Admissions directors are always trying to be nice so I'm not sure you can take it as more than that unfortunately. A lot of schools don't even look at their wait list until after the 15th so I agree with RubyBright, they probably also say that to deter people from contacting them multiple times before the 15th...good luck! Phoenix! you should contact the school and let them know you have a competing decision. They may be able to give you an update or at least let you know definitively that they will not give you an update until after the 15th so you can make a decision with the school you've been accepted to and not have to wait--or potential give up a spot to someone who is wait listed. I really wish that schools had a rolling process for wait listed applicants, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case... : (
  15. Do you have like an abstract or something that you feel good about? If so send that, if you don't have a piece of writing that you feel good about then don't send anything--since he said it was optional it would be worse to send shoddy writing or writing you aren't confident in then to not send anything at all.
