I know someone this happened to, and it was a mess, so definitely something to consider. Often, however, when professors move they can work out a deal to bring you with (I believe there's another current thread about this) so you may be able to keep working with them. Although that would mean a move.

I am dreading having to pack up and move, which has been really great for my bank account because I don't shop like I used to. Unless it's only available now and I'll never be able to find it again, I don't buy anything.

Check the results search for those schools. Northwestern historically notifies in February. Not sure about UChicago. It generally doesn't take until April unless you're waiting to hear if you've been bumped up from a waitlist.

Informal offer – What to reply when still waiting? (Social Psych)
Bearcat1 replied to kabelo's topic in Psychology Forum
You tell him you are interested. Period. That's not a commitment, and you ARE interested, so it's not a lie. And maybe throw in that you're flattered or excited or whatever. Everyone will know (or assume) that you have other offers, so I think what they're looking for it just a reassurance that you are still interested and they have a chance at getting you. Otherwise they don't want to waste a spot for you. So if there's any chance of you going there, you say yes, you're interested. And congrats! -
UT Austin was my only app that send the notification to referees after the fact. All the others were immediate. You could change them later, even after submission, but they were notified before I submitted the app. And I was so excited to come on this thread and bitch about Michigan, but it's already here. At least they let you comment on it when it was done! I let them know how annoying it was.

Congrats!!! Your first news is good news!!!

Can't we start a private chat on the regular board and just add all of us to it? I've never actually used that so I don't know if that's possible...I got on yesterday but non-art people were talking about non-art things and I was frightened.

I think in NYC graduate housing is your best bet because the rental market there is so different than anywhere else. In Chicago I'm certain you can find your own place for cheaper because I know people who go to school there. Have you looked on Craigslist? There are lots of listings for Chicago rentals and you can find out about neighborhoods on the city forum for Chicago here on Grad Cafe. (If you don't want to jinx yourself by looking now, it's something to keep in mind before you commit to school-owned housing.)

But you're across the pond (I've always wanted to say that!), so your circumstances are different and they will all know that. I wouldn't be nervous about that at all.
-
Because there might be interviews? I've already spoken to all of my POIs by phone, or I'd be totally freaking out. I'm great in person, but I suck on the phone...
-
I need to find a bunch of stuff to do with every second of my free time...I'd love to not think about this for two hours! That sounds like heaven. (And I don't know about NW. The impression I got was that it would be everyone, but I guess we won't know anything until things start happening. My spy isn't willing to dig for info, they only pass along what falls into their lap. You get what you pay for, I guess. )
-
No, this is the first time they are doing phone interviews, and it's not been announced or posted anywhere for applicants. I just have a spy on the inside so I have a little bit of info. (A ninja is like a spy, right?) Sorry for freaking anyone out!!!
-
The Northwestern interviews? I know someone in the program and it was announced at the faculty meeting, which was then reported to the students by the student rep who attends faculty meetings.
-
I tried to look up previous deadlines but no luck. I made a spreadsheet of my deadlines in June, and most of them were still for last year. Only one of them changed when the current dates were posted, and it just moved dates to the same Friday (first Friday of January), so it didn't change much. I wish they would post the deadlines for their decisions!!!
-
Maybe it's an unusual circumstance? There are no interviews listed for them in previous years, although I know Northwestern is doing phone interviews for the first time this year, so it's possible that it's new.

I'm going on two weeks for one, but one I sent through the application system's message center, and that was answered within the hour. Maybe try that?

Quick, Informal Phone Chat Sent Right After App Due Date?
Bearcat1 replied to jem6dd's topic in Interviews and Visits
I don't know anything about your field, but I'm pretty sure this is a good (great!) sign. My guess is that he wants to get some more information about you and your interests to take with him to the faculty meeting, meaning he wants to have all the ammo he needs to fight for your acceptance. And it sounds like the informal chat is just that. He wants a little more info on what he's read in your application, or maybe clarification, rather than formal interview questions like, "why this field?" "why this program?" Since you've been in contact with him previously, but he wants to chat again now that he's seen your app, I would take that as a sign that your application is strong and now that he's certain you're a viable candidate, there's more he'd like to know. Congrats! -
I've heard that graduate housing is often much more expensive than finding a place on your own, but if that's not the case, I think it's a great option when you're unfamiliar with the city.
-
I can't even figure out how to refresh it, and you're right, we'd be telling each other the same thing twice. I'm so desperate for information I'll try anything! I'm deleting it...
-
Exactly. Misery loves company, isn't that why we're all here?
-
Ugh. One of my LOR writers sent me an email about an article by one of my POIs with the POI's name in the subject line. NOT HELPFUL!!!
-
There's an iPhone app called Admissions Results... Edit: There aren't many people on it, but maybe if we all download it?

I don't know what the percentage would be, and I don't know if being on a visa makes any difference, but it won't be much. It will be less than 10%, but I would check online if you can find some advice on filling out your W-4 (it's a tax form they'll give you) because you can mess with those a bit to get more upfront, as opposed to when you file a tax return. I think you can safely figure that 90% of your stipend will go into your pocket.
-
You will be taxed only on your stipend, which is separate from a tuition waiver, so the cost of tuition won't matter. If your stipend wasn't enough to live on (but it sounds like it is) then you may have qualified for a break, if you needed loans to supplement.
