Most of the MA students at Case Western are fully funded for both years of the program.

Happy Decision Day! I'm bumping in hopes that more people will post since today is THE day for most of us. -
Art History/Visual Studies/Material Culture Final Decisions 2013

This is second-hand information from someone only mildly related to the field, but I heard that Ashley West is extremely theoretical and not very interested in objects. I don't know if that is relevant for you in any way, so feel free to completely disregard.

"Art History" is a problematic term. Discuss.
Bearcat1 replied to ProspectStu8735's topic in Art History
In the two methodology classes I've taken, it's never come up. Because it's pointless. So...disagree. I hope, come Fall, that everyone's methods professors have the good sense to assign more useful exercises than that. *fingers crossed* -

Only male waiters? Or do waitresses/bar maids count? For male waiters, Hopper's Nighthawks is the first thing I thought of.

Maybe they will be? My app still says "under review" so it's not over yet...right? Maybe?

There was a PhD admit before the MAs, so I think it's done.

German Quickly has been highly recommended on here. I bought it and skimmed through, so I can't definitively say it's great, but it looks pretty good. I can tell you for certain that Jannach's is not good. And I can't help with Italian or Dutch, but I'd be interested in Italian suggestions as well.

What did you Google to find the percentage? And is that graduates total, or specific to the department who wait listed you? I tried a search but all I found was wait list acceptance figures for undergrads...

Winterthur Program in American Material Culture
Bearcat1 replied to ArtHistoryandMuseum's topic in Art History
I know you need an MA for the BGC PhD program, but I'd be happy to share any info I've picked up along the way about the program in general. Please feel free to PM me. Also, I visited UDel and the graduate students were all lovely, so maybe you could "cold email" one of them in the program if their info is on the website? -
Winterthur Program in American Material Culture
Bearcat1 replied to ArtHistoryandMuseum's topic in Art History
Did you apply to any of these programs this cycle? It might be worth a shot to contact the DGS or your POI and ask how to improve. I know some places have a policy against discussing things like that, but if they don't, they may be able to give you some insight, and it can't hurt for them to know you are serious about improving. I don't know anything about the Winterthur program, specifically, or any of the other ones you mention, or I'd be happy to share. (I applied for the PhD program at the BGC, but I don't know what they look for in an MA candidate.) -
Institution Program (Season) Decision &Date St1 Date Added Notes UNC Chapel Hill Art History, Masters (F13) Rejected via E-mail on 25 Feb 2013 A 25 Feb 2013 GTH North Carolina. Based on the comments in the Forum, you accepted some real losers. Good luck with that. To this poster: Wow. Certainly all of the people on these forums know what it feels like to be rejected. It's really hard not to take it personally, no matter how many people tell you that it comes down to fit, blah, blah, blah. Turning in an application with your entire academic life on it makes one vulnerable and no matter how badly we want something, it doesn't always go our way. But not only do you come across as an immature, sore loser with your comments, but you sound ridiculous. Absolutely nothing I've seen of the posters who have been admitted to the UNC MA program even remotely leads anyone to believe they are losers. It's too bad for you that you weren't accepted, but based on your attitude, I think it's pretty lucky for anyone who would have been in your cohort. It's been noted previously, but I will reiterate: this forum is for people going through a really stressful process to find other people to lean on, learn from, and commiserate with. Grad school is really difficult and it can be made a lot easier if you are able to build friendships with the people around you, which is something you might want to consider if you do get accepted anywhere.

Acceptance Freakout Thread
Bearcat1 replied to asleepawake's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I know I'm a bit late on this, but I've been waitlisted as well and one of my LOR writers told me to express my interest right away. She said wait lists are sometimes ranked and sometimes not, but that they are almost always "squishy." So let them know you love them and that they are your number one choice!!! And GOOD LUCK!!! -
There are two Rutgers admits on the results board, both from Feb. 12.
-
It could be good news. It looks like rejections went out just before admits, but the admits are out now. Anything yet?
-
Won't they send you an itinerary before you go? Then at least you'll know what's scheduled. And since it's not an interview, the topics will probably be more along the lines of a sales pitch to get you to come there. And not too drunk....until the faculty leave.
-
I thought I'd start a new thread since some of the other ones have taken a nasty turn and I don't want to be involved with them. I anticipate that this week will be the start of big news for most of us, so I wanted a place to post it, ask questions, etc. Good luck to everyone, and fingers crossed for a big week with lots of (positive!) news.

Another thing to consider is contemporary Asian art. I don't have any suggestions for faculty to look into, but manga is a huge influence in contemporary Asian art, so my assumption is that it might be taken more seriously if you went that route (as opposed to American art). I have no idea how the funding works, but Sotheby's has MA programs in contemporary and I believe one of them is in Singapore. It might be really expensive, but maybe worth checking out in terms of curriculum. If you were to focus on contemporary Asian art for a PhD, there would be nothing stopping you once you have it from conducting research on American comics. I have a file of "weird" projects I'd like to work on one day that would never fly as a dissertation topic.

I think I've seen this posted on GC elsewhere, but never watched. A friend just sent it to me, so I'm sharing it, 'cause you guys are my peeps, and we need a pep talk about now.

That's how I feel on my good days. I'll have to find some Toddlers and Tiaras temper tantrum video that better describes my bad days. Of which their seem to be more and more lately...

The Frans Hals exhibit at the Met two summers ago was so great. I'm also quite smitten with the Wunderkammer at the Walters. And, although very small, the ongoing Life of Art: Context, Collecting, and Display at the Getty is really well done and, dare I say, innovative. That's my early modern two cents.

Agreed. POI, too? (The main one...)
