I wish there were more masters of the slapshot in the league, actually. That's a really exciting play. Of course, pulling a deke on the goalie on a short side tuck into the net is exciting, too.
-
Kane is still young in the league, and needs to be a little more seasoned I think.
-
They can't keep Kane penned up forever. That kid rocks.

never thought I'd enjoy hearing about a 404 error .... but I do.

LOL ... I am watching reruns of Dollhouse on Hulu while I wait to realize that nothing is happening tonight.

In a different conference, Go Hawks!

"The Great NSF GRFP Limbo Party 2009" is now alive on facebook.
-
No you won't! Look, there are a myriad of different fields, disciplines, schools, and situations. Some of us have it better than others, some fields are more highly funded, and sometimes it's the luck of the draw. Anyone who is still in limbo here has done an excellent job with their application, has research that the NSF is considering funding, and what we already have doesn't mean anything in the determination. We all know that. It's not like any of us sat down one day and thought "gee, I think I'll major in something that will bring me a huge stipend." We are all, every one of us, doing something that lights our intellect on fire, something we think will make a contribution. We will all survive grad school, one way or another. Kudos to you if your funding is top shelf!
-
I like that idea - would anyone else join it if I made it?
-
Yeah, see, your school is in NYC, where it costs what you make just to rent an apartment for a year. :::chuckle::: I am at a big public university, one that has been hit hard by the current financial problems our state has (read they increased tuition because of the economy and the state took the whole thing for themselves). I am a social scientist, which means that huge grants and lots of research money don't usually come our way - they go to the hard sciences at our school, we have huge medical research and engineering departments. So we muddle along as best we can. TAs usually also adjunct at other schools, making that whopping $2100 that was mentioned previously, in addition to their stipend. It's a bear to take classes, teach classes, and TA for others and still stay sane. Health insurance? Not for dependents. Job security? Re-apply for funding every year, hope you get it, and hope that your adjunct spot is till there. The best moments are all those meetings and seminars the school offers, because they always serve food before and/or after, so you go, never mind that the topic is whatever it happens to be.

TA positions at our department pay a whopping $13,000, no summer funding. I feel your pain.

So I called and asked if they were finally announcing them tonight ( hey, might as well be bold). Long pause on the phone .... more pause .... and she said she doesnt' know for sure if it's tonight, that the site routinely goes down for maintenance, but that they were told it would be this week sometime.
-
This may be it, really. They did maintenance last Friday night, and then they had the site down all Sunday (it came up beta and has ever since). Everyone we've talked to says this week sometime, why not now? And like Higgins (I think it was Higgins) I almost am afraid to find out.

More than double my salary, if I get the award. Scary how well grad students live, isn't it?
-
Give US the stupid list and let us pick the winners. I can work a computer, and can post them online somewhere.
-
Interesting question, and one I hope I made clear to the woman on the phone that I am tired of seeing. A few days, at first, wasn't it? The it was two weeks, two weeks, two weeks, one week, one week. It's been 5 weeks, going on 6. If it's any indication, the folks who applied for straight NSF grants for research just found out they were approved or not at the end of last week. I think their deadline was the beginning of April. wasn't ours originally the middle of March? I forget, it's been so long.
-
Well, since we are still on groundhog day, has anyone checked out wolframalpha.com yet? It went live.
-
I just called. The woman at GRFP said that the list is together, the NSF is working on getting the required folks to sign off on it. She said it would be by the end of the week, and I said that's what they told us last week ... and the week before that ... She said it would be sooner rather than later, with no guess as to date. Do we know anything more? Yes. Is it useful? No. Argh!!!!

Welcome to the boards, rojo. It's amazing that, when you talk to folks outside grad school, they seem to think that everyone is funded, everyone has a nice easy life and we all live in an ivory tower. We aren't, we don't, and all of us are proof of that. Forge ahead, everyone, this will work out somehow. Luck to all of us, whether we hear today, tomorrow or whenever!
-
Now I would pay to see this epic battle.
-
Yeah, go to nsfgrfp, click the link to check the status, it resolves to beta and there is no change on the site.

Higgins, this is beyond belief. I see now why you say you're going crazy, and for good reason! Let's just hope that you get good news when it comes!
