I agree. Whoever gets one has to come back and let us know, so even if we don't get one we can feel happy for those that do!

I don't know about Higgins, but a LOT of schools/departments don't offer funding for master's students at all. Ours is one of those. This year, with all the budget woes, we have 18 funding lines, and about a hundred grad students in various stages of completion. Competition is fierce.

And I have been looking at the summer tour guide positions around here and filling out apps, hoping to get something that will allow me to at least eat something besides ramen and mac & cheese. If I don't get this I'll do the loans thing, but that's not the best idea I've ever had. And blah, summer is killer for grad students if you don't have funding and there's no summer academic stuff your way. It's rare for there to be paying positions for summer in my field. And the master's means I can teach at a community college or as an adjunct (lousy pay, btw, I'm doing that in the fall) but with all the PhDs out there those jobs are increasingly going to folks whose education is longer than a master's.

They are operating still from the beta-fastlane version, which means the original site is offline. Could mean nothing, could mean they've spent since last night on hold pending alterations to the site, could mean it's ready for the final approval, could mean there's a real actual glitch in the system that they're tracking. I like meowser's take, that they are prepared for a release. But if that happens, they won't need to take the site down for more than a wink, since it's already the beta version. All they'd need to do is swap out the pages, I think.

We have posted about 1500 times since the original awards went out. I think a little of both are in order.

I know, I know. And back when I thought my app would be rejected in the first round I was comfortable in that knowledge. But then they got my hopes up with the limbo thing. You are right, HM is still prestigious, and it means that our ideas for research are sound, we can convey them intelligently, and that this can be the basis for future requests. But .... all the waiting has made me hope for more.

Oh, I feel silly now. It's LOLcat. It's means "okay thanks bye."

You know, I was thinking the same thing a while ago. Not knowing is eminently preferable at this point to getting an email saying it's HM. This way, I can pretend I'm actually still in the running, that my proposal was sound, my references excellent, my background sufficient, and my work would contribute to the greater discipline. If I hear HM, it means, kthxbai.

Yay, we have uttered the magic incantation, the numbers are in our favor, we have posted 200 pages worth of ... well, I was going to say intelligence, but maybe that's not always the case!

Thanks for this! It made me laugh. And my favorite Monty Python quote ... "What makes you think she's a witch?" "Well, she turned me into a newt!" "A newt?" " ... I got better."

Question for you - I am teaching four field intro in the fall, which of course includes bio/anth. What topics do you feel are absolutely essential for a freshman to learn in bio, since they may never go on to major in the field? I have three weeks to cover a brief look at the discipline, and certainly don't want to get heavy into something that may not serve them well.

Yes, but not getting a lot of additional fellowships does not rule out getting any (semanticist here). I feel your pain on the hearing by Monday, though. We'll be thinking of you, and hoping that when we hear, you're one of the lucky ones!

Really! Bio/Physical Anth and Linguistic Anth folks in our department almost never hang around together, we really have no common frame of reference - and to some extent that includes the archaeologists (except for those heavily into agency, performance, and other theoretical underpinnings). If they were ever to eliminate our department, the Bio/Physical folks (in our case mostly primatologists) would go to Bio Science, the Archs to Classics or History, the Lingoes to that department, and the culturals to Sociology, Cultural Studies, or American Studies. That said, it's not that I never use stats. I am resurrecting the Varbrul set of analytical tools that Labov used in his earlier studies (Martha's Vineyard is the classic) to take a look at instances of particular performative utterances in temporary recurrent liminoid communities. Then there's always the analysis of the incidences of prepronomial affixes and of infixes in indigenous North American languages, in a comparison to Mohawk (Kanienkeha on Akwesasne).

Oh, you folks go right ahead with that one. Me, I'm in social sciences - stats, not so much. I am just now learning the ways in which SPSS can make my life easier analyzing whatever paltry stats my future dissertation work elicits. Hey how about a lesson in stats for dummies?

Rather disheartening, isn't it. Our one week was announced last what, Tuesday? It's up soon. Maybe all the June 1st guessers were correct. Itis, however, still resolving to the beta page, for whatever that's worth. We have only a couple more pages to go until we reach the magic 200. Anyone have a topic we can bat around?

We all have to promise to come back into this place, whether we get the HM or the award, and let everyone know. I feel like I know you folks now, and I'd be happy for everyone that gets the cash!

I concur! Higgins, you're one of the best of us. Hang in there, the wait is almost over.
