Congrats to everyone who has heard about interviews/acceptances so far! I guess it's starting to pick up now, right? Anyone else's stomach in knots about the next two to six weeks? My anxiety is officially in overdrive... according to the results search, someone heard about an interview at my top choice on January 20th last year... That means I should hear soon, right? RIGHT??? Agh it's hard to know for sure because there are only six results for that program last year and they are pretty much all rejections why why why why whyyyyyyyyy. Also, what if the admissions deadline was different last year so that actually, they didn't send out that interview invitation 19 days post-application due date? So much uncertainty in my brain and silence in my inbox! Ack sorry about the crazy I have unleashed in this post. Can you tell my nerves are getting to me? I need a hug -

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
Allouette replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
That's an awesome answer, PhDreams! I hope you don't mind that I'm totally going to borrow that from now on Thanks so much! I'm rooting for you, too! People are starting to hear things on the Anthro board and the gosh darned results search indicate the next fourteen days may be the most important fourteen days... I don't think I've crossed my fingers harder for anything in my life, ever! REFRESH FASTER, INBOX. WHAT IF SOMEONE EMAILED ME IN THE PAST FOUR SECONDS??? -

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
Allouette replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
I did this at first, but I was tired of people going 'huh, that's... neat' in a really patronizing tone. That or, 'but aren't you applying to any good schools?' or going 'but where else' when I finished my Ivy-free list... So now I just say the Ivies all in a rush at the end and follow it with 'but I'm not really holding out for them obviously'. -

Most Annoying Applications: Fall 2013 Edition
Allouette replied to ridofme's topic in Waiting it Out
SECONDED. Also, CUNY was pretty annoying, because their system was so bare bones (no room to attach a CV, what is this, the middle ages?), and because they wanted you to send in a cheque (again, what is this, the middle ages?) and supplemental material by mail, and keeping track of it all was annoying as all get up. -
"En verité, le chemin importe peu; la volonté d'arriver suffit a tout" - Albert Camus (Truthfully, the path you take doesn't matter; the desire to get there is what counts) A reminder that regardless of what happens this application season, we'll get there in the end. I know it (P.S., If anyone knows a better way to phrase this in English, let me know? My translation does NOT do it justice)

I am kind of digging the idea of toy boat rejections. I feel like it would soften the blow a little, right? Although the hat is just mean. Way to be overkill, dream Harvard.

Your plan sounds wonderful, alf10087! Well, except for the cassava. But thats just because I can't stand cassava. If I don't get in, I'll probably do fieldwork for a year, hopefully with my intended study animal, and hopefully hammer out at least one more publication during that year.

This times a million... My parents have only just stopped actively DISCOURAGING me, and now just have this resigned acceptance of the fact that I'm pursuing a PhD. It's a special brand of cynicism that comes from decades of being in academia, and they make no bones about telling me they think that going into academia is a terrible idea. That being said, it is kind of nice to have parents who understand how stressful this process is, and who are familiar enough with editing/writing research statements and grant proposals that they could seriously help me with mine. -

Have a blast, radiomars! I visited Yale in early September, and found everyone to be so insanely nice... The grad students were fantastic. (And while you're there, see if you can get us the inside scoop about decisions, k? ) -
