  1. If it helps anyone waiting for Western or Appalachian, I am going to turn down the offers just as soon as the online system lets me. I love their programs but I think I have a better fit at ECU and have already made the decision to go there. S, hopefully in a matter of days the wait list will be populated and hopefully you guys will get calls!
  2. From what I understood in the letter and from previous questions I asked of Teresa Boyett, once the people email in that they want to be on the wait-list, the ad-comm gets those names and ranks the wait list, from which offers are subsequently sent out for any spots remaining in the program until all spots are full. This sounds like a ranking to me, and I think I remember them explaining that they assign point values to every part of the application to determine who gets in (etc). As far as rejections, I would guess that if a candidate doesn't fit the grad schools minimums, there is probably a rejection letter out there, but I don't recall at the visiting day if they said anything about candidates being rejected. I do remember them stating that all qualified candidates who don't get an offer during the first cycle are offered a chance on the wait list.
  3. USC was one of my top choices. I love the campus, the professors were great, and the research going on there is absolutely fantastic. The speech and hearing center is a little bit older, but well-established in the city. There are quite a few options for the internship opportunities, and with MUSC not too far away, there are options for you to work in a medical area for your future employment, if you desire. As far as the GA or funding- when I went to the visit day, they asked the current grad students, out of everyone who wanted a GA, who got one. I think the response was pretty close to 100%. The reason given is that USC offers a to of grad degrees that are part-time, and those students are not eligible for GAs, so SLP students can work as a GA in several departments on campus, not just CSD. As an out of state student, the GA basically brings your tuition to in-state rates. You will need to basically pay in-state out of pocket or through federal/private loans unless you are awarded one of the rare scholarships. I heard most of those are for 2nd year students. If I hadn't gotten wait-listed, I would have a really tough decision as well. ECU and USC were tied for me; the fit, research interest, and overall university feel is much better for me than many places I visited. I am planning to eventually apply to USC for the PhD program when I am ready for that, too. The debt issue was important for me, big-time, which is why I chose not to stay on the wait-list.
  4. Sometimes that anxiety won't go away until you start the process of enrolling, getting your email account set up, or even as far as your first day of interacting in your department on campus. I had a similar level of anxiety, feeling nervous about my grad program, etc, when did my masters in teaching. And I did mine at the same place as my undergrad! It all settles down once you get comfortable in your new life. You might also find that your stress goes away once you are far away from this time of deciding. Your brain is reminding you of the stress you went through to get to that decision, and instead of enjoying and reveling in the news that you know a little bit of what is coming, your brain is forcing you to think about the "what-ifs" and the unknowns of tomorrow. Focus on all of the good things, decline the offers you don't want, accept the offer you do want, and then try to focus your attention elsewhere. It might help the anxiety to dissipate. Good luck!!!
  5. Most places around the triangle that a typical grad would WANT to live do not do pre-leasing. The places that do pre-leasing are usually more geared for undergraduates moving off campus. In chapel hill, renting close to campus, you will want to start looking now until June, and then pretty much start calling to inquire how far out you can sign a lease. It all depends on when their current tenants are moving out. Most rental units in Durham want immediate leasing, as well as Raleigh. If you are looking for the fall, most tenants don't have to give more than 30 to 60 days notice to vacate at the end of their lease, so you may not find a lot of openings until may or June. It never hurts to call and ask if you have found an apartment or rental home that you are highly interested in. If you go through a property mangement co, often times they will list the available by date on their web listing. Good luck you guys!
  6. Yeah, app doesn't do that. They have a quota of in-field and out-of-field students (I think 22 and 12, respectively). Since they admit in the spring as well, they have limited class sizes for the Fall admits. When I read the statement you quoted from a previous poster about the school realizing that a student would probably turn them down, I personally was offended that someone would think so poorly of a school that they don't think they can "get" a candidate of high stats (etc). Especially since people reading the forums probably did apply there, whether they comment regularly or not. The school ad-comm has no way of knowing that anyone has been accepted elsewhere.
  7. Okay folks, if you are going to ECU, either on campus or DE, put it up here! :-) I am going on campus. Since I am out of field with most of my pre-reqs, I have 2 classes to take this summer (Artic dev or dis, and aural rehab). I also need to complete and turn in my 25 observation hours by July 15th. Other than that, I am all set with a place to live and everything else! I am going to visit ECU in April 12th to get acquainted with everyone. Very excited! Anyone else going to ECU this fall?
  8. I did, as well as two follow up emails to fill out formal applications for a scholarship and tuition remission. It seemed as if all I needed to do a the paperwork and that I would be getting the offers. Pretty sweet package, just not for me.
  9. I have not been able to enter the decision. Used multiple computers and multiple types of Internet browsers. I did a tech ticket on it, and their response was to use Internet explorer 9 . (Duh, already tried that, and told them so in my ticket request). Can't understand why they can't actually read the ticket I sent in and they are telling me info I already know. Ugh!
  10. And my typing skills on the iPad = stink! It now says appalachian Stata on the results board. Oh well. Such has been my day at work today, haha!
  11. I used to have bad nightmares about this exact thing. No kidding. Obsessively looked up my app status and confirmed with each school just to confirm and calm my nightmares.
  12. Just got accepted to Appalachian! Feels good to have more than one offer. Since I have already decided to go elsewhere, I will be declining. Boone is a very neat area! Good luck to anyone that this helps!
  13. Nope, not going to wait for App State or Greensboro. ECU is a top choice for me! Now if only my computer would cooperate with my attempts to decline the WCU offer, I would feel good to have opened a spot for someone else.
  14. It's coming! You will hear something soon. March 15th is only a few more days away, and hopefully your news will just start rolling out!
  15. Accepting the offer to attend East Carolina. Gonna be a pirate!!

Grats! But don't forget you're a Tar Heel!

  16. Wow, Tay! Radford! Congratulations!!! :-) I have decided to accept the offer for the on-campus program at East Carolina University. The program is a perfect fit for me, and we're already pursuing jobs for my husband 110% (his family is looking, my family is looking, we are both looking, etc.). I am very excited about this opportunity. Once you know where you want to go, and you've done all the legwork on the financial end, it's a no-brainer! Or, at least it was for me! (This means I am giving up a position with a GA plus offers to apply for a scholarship and tuition remission at Western Carolina University as well as a spot in the Distance Ed program at East Carolina as well, so I hope someone is able to reap the benefits!)
  17. Tay, I am most likely going to decline the western offer, so don't be disappointed yet. Great place, and I was offered a scholarship plus tuition remission, but financially we need to be out at ECU where we already own a townhouse. I just finished running the numbers to see if it would work. So... Your good news might be coming! It seems that they haven't sent out all offers yet since the number of acceptances or any other news on the results page seems low. We haven't fully decided but this is the way we are leaning thus far.
  18. That last sentence sounds sad:-(. Just let them know that you got into a great school but the cost might be prohibitive. Hopefully they will understand! Plus, there is still a lot of time to hear from your other schools. Stay confident. If you could get into NYU, it seems reasonable to expect at least one or two other eventual acceptances. :-)
  19. YAY!!!! Congratulations! Hard work pays off!!!
  20. I did a 4+1 B.Music plus MAT during my first stint in college ... and that was great, because I paired my undergrad and grad classes together and came out with a Master's in 5 years. If I had the chance to do SLP as 4+1, I would definitely stay with my same institution. That being said ... since SLP doesn't do a 4+1 option, and it is basically 4, then 2, I say find a new place. Pros - new networking opportunities, new city, new academic perspectives, possible new areas of research / focus, you can always keep your UG profs in your circle of connections, potential new methods or program design (shifting your way of thinking can be a positive too) Cons - new place to learn, potential new methods or program design, new professors (you would eventually get used to it), some moving expenses I'm a "checklist" kind of chick, so I hope this helps you with your decision!
  21. Hey guys, I just wanted to remind those of you on wait-lists to consider some of the signatures of people on here who got accepted at a place you are wait-listed in addition to other schools: They eventually have to pick one (or none) to attend. Which means that being on a wait-list really isn't so bad! People give up offers of admission for all kinds of reasons, so don't lose hope if you are on a wait-list. Check out last year's (and years prior) of discussions on the SLP threads - many signatures show LOTS of people getting admitted from a wait-list and they were very happy about that. It's hard to remember that when you are the one desperately waiting on the wait-list. If finances weren't an issue, and we didn't have to consider that my husband will have to find a new job, I'd sit on the South Carolina wait-list FOR-EV-UH if I could. I'd stay on the wait-list until I eventually got in. Not gonna happen for us, because the finances are coming into play, so someone else may get moved up the wait-list because I'm no longer on it. Think positive!!!!
  22. Tay - I seriously think WCU is still rolling them out - it takes the IT people a while to enter the decisions into the computer system, from what I've been told. Keep the hope alive! You also have some great programs on your list, and App State hasn't begun to notify yet, so there are quite a few reasons to keep your hope alive that you'll know the place for you very soon. :-)
  23. i got a wait-list letter for the University of South Carolina as well. We are going to decide between the universities that have already accepted me (ECU or WCU), or still have a possibility of hearing (App State or UNC-G),. Good luck to all who choose to stay on the wait-list for USC!!!! It's a great school. Maybe I'll be applying for my PhD there in a few more years... :-)
  24. Thanks! I am really excited!!!
  25. Ack! Someone posted about receiving their decision from South Carolina today... Postal mail.... I am stuck at work until 3!!! Achhhhhh! Can't wait!
