2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

Has anyone done some preliminary apartment / housing hunting? I am a total type-A personality and while I'm waiting (and while I am home sick from work today), I'm looking at possible housing options online near the remaining schools on my list... And hounding my realtor about selling our vacant townhouse that has been on (and off) the market since 2008 .... ugh, you girls/guys just coming out of undergrad, adult life can really STINK sometimes! My hubby went to meet a recruiter last night for a company that may have a job in several cities near the schools on my list ... we are trying to prep so that as soon as I get an offer and accept it, he can immediately find/take a job and we can move. I can commute to the school where I work from my parents' house, if he gets his job before the school year contract is over! I'm going to hate turning 29 at the end April. Hopefully I will know where I'm going before then. I know there are a few other "oldies" on here like me. The last age we ever turn, right, girls!!?!! -
Friends/Family "helping" you decide which school is "better."

"You should go there, I've always wanted to live in the mountains!" "It is REALLY hot down there, I don't know if we can help you move..." (gee, thanks mom and dad, it is only my TOP choice!) "Why didn't you apply to Duke? They have a great voice clinic and the VA hospital is right there!" (uh, they don't have a MS in SLP or CSD program...) "Wait, you actually are considering going THERE?" (referring to a school with a lesser-ranked general undergrad reputation, but respected grad program in SLP and federal funding / grants / over half of admitted students get assistantships) All this is hypothetical of course, we are making preliminary decisions (husband and I) because we are also job-hunting for him in cities that we feel are likely or cities that we would choose if I am accepted. Love this thread. I also love the sh*t people say thread in "waiting it out." People outside of this process just don't know, and no amount of explaining will help. -

I am home sick from work today,.... Went to the doc this morning and she gave me a prescription for a z pack, an inhaler, and told me to buy a cool mist vaporizer.... So close to $100 later, I am home resting. It doesn't help that two of my schools said they were going to start notifying acceptances today, so now I am stuck at home with nothing to do except obsessively check the website and my email. Ah-such is life. Jmarti, I think you and I feel the same way, except I am out of field. I feel so out of my league, and I have gotten into a top program and completed a previous masters program (diff field). It is deceptively competitive, because grad schools state 3.0 minimums, but then they get so many applicants above that, I wonder if they really do take into account the rigor of our coursework with double majors, what classes we took and where, etc. A lot of professors when I did my undergrad in 2002 do not grade now like they did then- then, if you got an A, that was rare, and we are talking about UNC chapel hill. I am scared that these schools looking at my transcripts now won't realize the difficulty of earning the grades at what is basically a "public ivy" or take into account my over 132 hours of rigorous credits, and realize that my flute performance professor required us to practice over 6 hours every day outside of class and rehearsals. I basically lived in the music building and still managed to do fairly well in non-music courses. It doesn't help that UNC grad degrees don't actually give you a GPA, so I have no GPA to report from my MAT, either. I hope that isn't hurting my chances! -
Might hear from 2 of my apps beginning tomorrow... the rest, t-minus 8 days!!

Congratulations on the acceptance! Perhaps you could clarify your question -- what kind of information do you want to know about Adelphi? I mean, at this point, we assume you have done some research on it, otherwise you probably wouldn't have applied. Do you have any specific questions that someone knowledgeable of the program could help answer? -

It depends on what classes you have already taken. Both USU and Longwood require a previous course, but they don't have to have been with their programs. I think it is anatomy and physiology for SLP. If you have that, I think you are okay to register wherever you can get the class. By the way, I checked with Univ of Alaska Anchorage, and their pre-req coursework is only offered fall-spring, but it is available online. Just in case anyone was wondering. :-) -

We can do this! I am sitting here, knowing my stats aren't as good as many on the results page, but we will all get there, somehow, some way! Praying for all of you, and myself too. -

Stuck between a rock and a hard place ... I seriously WANT to obsessively check my app status online, but I'm concerned about checking it at work. For one, I might be so bummed out that I want to cry (or might actually cry), or for another, I might be so elated that I don't do such a great job at work the rest of the day ... so from this point on, I'm going to make myself wait to check app statuses at home. EVEN harder!!! Up to now, it was all theoretically just checking it to see if there were any "referred" or "decision pending" updates... now that I'm on a single-digit countdown to actually receiving some news (if I'm lucky enough to be in the first wave of apps notified), ... it's so much harder to be patient!! Come on, 3:15!!! -

Maybe it's just my perspective, but I am really bothered by posts on the results board that show that the person is accepted, but then ask (in the comments section), "does anyone know anything about this program?" Is seems like people just randomly applied, and only if accepted do they bother to try to find out anything about the program. Maybe that's why this application process for SLP is so competitive.... People are applying to schools that they really know nothing about!! I took the time to research every program, from pre-reqs, to in program classes, clinic experiences, externship or internship opportunities, research of the current faculty, any funding or grants they currently have, contacting grad directors, visiting, etc. I started with a list of around 20 places I researched, and cut it down from there. Obviously geographical location was big for me, but the research I did will help me decide if i get more than one offer, or any offers at all. Why spend the money to apply to a program if you really don't know anything about it??? Rant over. -

East Carolina will notify around the fifteenth of March, giving the first wave up to April 15th to respond to the offer. UNC greensboro is expected to notify between march 8th and April 15th, at which point I am guessing that the wait listed people will be offered spots that may have been refused by the first wave. I didn't apply to the others, but if I don't get in this year, I am adding Armstrong Atlantic, UGA, GSU, and ETSU to my list -

hey badgerina, on the FAFSA, check to see if you submitted it specifically to Marquette (you can check the status online). If you have submitted it to the school, it could be that the financial aid office doesn't process the FAFSA for aid / federal loans until you officially decide to attend. One university I contacted basically told me that they will receive the information early, because most people turn them in February/ March, but they don't process unnecessarily. You can always call the financial aid office to find out more, but unfortunately a lot of financial aid offices will not release aid information over the phone. Some have verification questions and then they'll release the info. If you have a way to login to a student portal with Marquette, there may be a link to look at your aid info (although it sounds like you have looked at that with CheckMarq). -
Freaking out about something I saw on my financial aid login for one place I applied ... then I realized the mistake ... and I'm good now. Still waiting, albeit impatiently, but waiting all the same.

Talk about a momentary freak-out session. I just got an email about UNC Greensboro financial aid which included my student number... after going through all of the steps it said to do, I finally found the screen that showed "requirements" to be satisfied, which included admission .... haha!! Wow, now I have student ID numbers for UNC-G, WCU, and USC... would be nice to get an acceptance of course! Wouldn't it be funny if my acceptance was noted in the financial aid system before I was notified? Yeah, that would be cool. Now I have more websites to obsessively login. It's semi-positive news to think about as I wait for official news, so I'm holding on to that!! :-) -

We got to watch the snow at my school... The kids are nuts, but of course the rest of my county didn't get snow so we are stuck at school while the county office keeps on blindly believing that the snow is not going to affect the roads out in the rural parts of the county... Ugh!!! Checking my email incessantly isn't helping my overall stress level. Internally I know that I won't hear until at minimum Friday, and prbably not until next week.... Trying to keep my mind busy with work and maybe a few minutes on Gradcafe is really a good stress reliever today. -
If I have the choice, I am leaning towards any kind of funding or assistantship. Rank or program prestige would only come into play if i have some kind of extra incentive to go such as funding or the research area I desire. Yes, I eventually want to get a PhD, but as long as the program I choose has great classes and perhaps a thesis option, and maybe a specific area of research, I am okay with a lesser known program.

Sad! Hopefully some of the other schools will come through. I checked through last year's SLP threads, and it seems like a LOT of people got accepted off wait-lists, so I'm hoping that if nothing else, we at least have a wait-list and a chance to come off it. -
Wouldn't it be nice if universities actually OVER-estimated their notification dates, so you are pleasantly surprised to receive an acceptance (or whatever) a week prior to the estimate? In my perfect little world, that would be great. Saying "notifications expected March 15th" could actually mean that you'll definitely know something by that date, and you might know sooner. Utopia, perhaps? UGH the waiting!!!! Only a little bit longer, if I'm not wait-listed.

I think I read something about medicare/medicaid billing during your CFY year, that your supervising SLP has to sign off. Don't know if I'm remembering this accurately. Maybe someone else here knows more about the CFY?
