2013 SLP Admissions Thread!
queenleblanc replied to midnight's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
In good news today, UNC Greensboro reports that 100% of their candidates in SLP have taken and PASSED the praxis, on the first attempt! YAY! This gives me lots of optimism if I end up there. Like I said before... would love to get in anywhere I applied, so I am very much excited about what all of the programs are doing!! -

You're right, of course we know you're right ... it's just easier to sympathize on here than on facebook. :-) I was thinking just earlier today how in about 2-3 weeks, I will start to have some answers and have a more clear idea of what lies ahead. Not a guarantee, or even a final decision, but at least the twilight zone will be a thing of the past. Plus my work is totally stressing me out (but try not to put much about that online for my own sanity and so that I can leave work at work / not think about it at home). :-) Thanks for the kick in the tail, I needed it. -

Having a down-kind of day. It's raining, my students couldn't get recess so I let the K-1's have "inside recess" during music class (structured music movement games/songs to sing and dance, etc.). I keep telling myself that everywhere I applied didn't start notifying until Feb 28th last year, but then UNC has already started calling people ... but it could also be a combination of "no news" plus my audiology quiz I have to take tonight (online). Chilling out on the grad cafe / constantly refreshing email for a little while to de-stress. Had to miss a fun field trip this afternoon because of my audiology class having everything due on Tuesdays. In positive news, my cat was overjoyed to see me walk in the door! -
prospective grad student for speech therapy

Come on over to the SLP forum -- Speech-Language Pathology i am out-of-field and have had to do a lot of research online about getting into SLP. You are already a step ahead by being in CSD courses in undergrad (I wish I had thought to branch out more during undergrad 7 yrs ago...). As far as strengthening your resume, get some experience volunteering or even working as a reception in the field around populations that you'll encounter as an SLP. Definitely look for opportunities around your desired population as well. Build up your observation hours, and the shadowing opportunity sounds great! CSD programs look at GPA's relative to the difficulty of the classes, etc. As long as you are above a 3.0, you qualify -- just keep in mind that admissions for SLP is VERY competitive, so apply to schools with all kinds of ranges of test scores for previous cohorts (you can see this on ASHA's EdFind site, although most of us are convinced the numbers are probably two or more years old). You can find a lot more on the SLP threads, so come on over!!! :-) -
Applying in 2014 without background

A couple of us are taking pre-reqs before we get in- one thing to consider is taking the last two or three classes during the summer per to admission, and indicating that on your CV / SOP. We have had some discussions on the 2013 admissions thread about the classes, so let us know if you can't get them in. I am doing pre-reqs through Longwood University and will be taking the last necessary ones with Utah State this summer since Longwood doesn't offer everything I need. As long as you send all of your transcripts, it really doesn't matter how many places you take classes. We obviously could not afford the classes out of pocket, and its a non-degree program so I am not eligible for federal loans. We got a private student loan with Sallie Mae to pay for the pre-req coursework. As far as schools that admit partial pre-reqs, Appalachian State does, as does USC. There are several others. They either add the one or two classes you need into your time there, or you start early (summer session) or finish one semester after the in-field students. Each program does this a different way. At UNC CH, they don't even look at applications unless all pre-reqs will be completed by entry, and I noticed a few other programs like that when I was searching last summer. -

HA, in student central, I was a master. If I was going to register for 6 classes, I would open 6 student central windows, enter the call number for each class in one window and hit submit, go to the next (without waiting for the first one to complete or confirm), etc. I also prioritized - for the more general / liberal arts classes where getting the time you want would be a challenge, I entered those first. I actually got ALL of the sections /times I wanted EVERY time I registered except spring of freshman year, doing it this way, and I was done in less than 2 minutes while I heard people screaming up and down the hall about "it kicked me out"! and all kinds of problems they had. ;-) Ah, undergrad days. I miss them!! -

I think it is the same, but maybe someone who checked both CC and AY can tell us if one status changed before the other one did? -

Holy cow, I didn't know carolina switched from "studentcentral.unc.edu" to this new connect carolina ... things change when you've been away for 6 years... Connect Carolina is SO much better than the old student central site. Wow! Yeah, my decision is still "not yet available." Patiently (or impatiently, but quietly) waiting. :-) -

Me too, ... so confused. My app wasn't officially complete until 1/2 though -- one of my LOR's is basically computer illiterate, which took longer. Otherwise it was complete on 11/11 when I paid the fee (and 2 of my LOR's were already in). If they are going by date, maybe that's why I haven't heard either. Or maybe we are just wait-listed until they hear back from the first cycle of applicants, and then we will get notice of being officially accepted? ;-) Thinking optimistically!! -

We can do this, y'all! Keep your chin up. If there isn't a rejection, it's the "no news is good news." From what I've been told, because many candidates apply to so many programs, these schools often DO pull from the wait-list. It's just a matter of time before you hear from these great schools. Don't forget why you applied in the first place. I'm thankful that these admissions committees ARE taking their time, in many respects, because that shows that each candidate is probably getting careful consideration. Stay positive! And if you need some positive energy, check out the "PSA smile" thread on waiting it out. ETA: apparently I wrote "threat" instead of "thread." Oops!! I'm sure if I keep looking at my posts, I will find 100 more typos. I like to think that my computer simply can't keep up with my typing speed. :-) -
Being wait listed does not mean you aren't qualified, and an eventual acceptance off the wait list simply indicates that you ARE what they want. Try to think of it that way. If that doesn't work, certainly go where you feel you are appreciated, because starting off such an important academic career in a negative mindset is probably not the way most people want to start things off. Honestly, I couldn't imagine why the other candidates would give two hoots that you may have been wait listed. Many times they have to make that list simply because a limit in the number of spots.

thoughts on not having a cell phone in grad school?
queenleblanc replied to iowaguy's topic in Officially Grads
We use net10 for basic cell phone service, only $25 a month for the 750 anytime minutes, can use for text, pix, call, etc. it us uses Verizon towers for the most part. My husband and I did the switch from smart phones to these, and we save over $100 a month on net 10. Something to consider if you don't necessarily need all of the smart phone capabilities. -

Here is the USu info page on proctors. You might try a current professor, or your old high school teachers, perhaps. I didn't click on the restrictions in proctors, but I hope this helps! https://rcde.usu.edu/testing/index.cfm/public/proctors -

For a Skype interview, I would think a nice business-y top, nice jewelry, in your own personal style, would suffice. It's likely depending on your camera size that its basically shoulders or mid-torso up. -
Anyone else wondering if they are secretly monitoring to see how much we log into our application status, and deliberately delaying notification? Haha, a bit paranoid now, I know I have logged on pretty much every day for two weeks now...

Glad they we able to answer that question! It feels good to move forward on the incessant amount of paperwork for school!

Congrats in the BU interview, toothbrush! ;-) My hope is that allow the people who got accepted where I applied also have multiple acceptances and will open up a spot for me. Haven't heard really any news, positive or negative, so far. This week and next week... and possibly the next.. are going to be super huge for many of us! Good luck at the interview! -
Check independent vs dependent status- I think if your parents are still claiming you (available until age 26, I think), you are technically dependent. I would call and ask. For my first masters degree, I was claimed by my parents,so my mother did the FAFSA for me, as their tax information was relevant. Obviously now, returning to school after having worked six years, I am considered independent.

I have been to Western once, and Asheville once, but not really to look at housing options or much past the quad area of the campus. My husband is from Lincolnton (not too far away from Asheville), and he suggested living there, I just don't like the idea of an hour long commute to class.... But if there really isn't anything even in Sylva, and probably not much in Waynesville, we are considering maybe Canton, the west side of Asheville, etc. that could cut the commute to maybe 35 minutes. Hopefully we will get a better feel for the area when we visit on the 16th. Hoping to go up on the day before or maybe stay the day after to do some looking.

It sounds like a lot of the feedback you will need / get will be virtual (over email, etc) -- I'm not sure why a pregnancy would impact your advisor's ability to respond to you, except for perhaps the weeks right when she has the baby. She isn't falling off the face of the planet... but maybe that's just my perspective. My sister-in-law had a baby in August, and a friend just had her baby in mid-February -- they are quicker back to their computer than anything else, so I could see this actually as a benefit to you. It would be prudent to at least have the conversation to find out if she plans to return to her position after whatever amount of appropriate time and continue to advise you with a possible December finishing date. Other than that, if you end up keeping your advisor and finishing on schedule, just try to email her whatever you need to get you through a few weeks during that time in mid-summer.

Boo on that cost! It might even be cheaper to try an out-of-state community college at that price, wow! Thanks for the answer on CLEP! I have never heard of that, but I'm sure it is useful for some people! -
I love the t-rex. Still laughing that one out... definitely a good way to keep my mind off of things that will eventually work themselves out!!! :-)

Yay for Western and Appalachian State, Tay1991! These next couple of weeks are going to be tough but we can do it!! :-) I'm hoping all of us have multiple acceptances! -
Does anyone have ideas on where to look for off-campus housing at Western Carolina? I don't yet know if I've been accepted, but I am getting positive responses thus far and need to start thinking of this being a real possibility. I have visited a few schools on my list but just didn't have enough time to visit WCU before the snow started coming in. I'm planning to visit on March 16th, and would like to have some places on a list to drop by, etc. I've done some searching on the internet and mostly found student housing (partially or fully furnished, small apartments, etc.). We have our own (REALLY NICE) washer/dryer and we'd like a place with a dishwasher, a patio/small yard, maybe even a rented single-family small home (2 br, 2 ba). My husband is thinking of looking in Waynesville, so if he gets a job in Asheville we are between both of them... Any input/suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
