2013 SLP Admissions Thread!
queenleblanc replied to midnight's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My undergrad GPA isn't as high as the admissions results from previous years, and below the range given for accepted students in the past. Plus, my previous grad degree at UNC doesn't do grades, they do HP, P, and LP (which are NOT ABC), and the SLP folks will understand that because that's how THEY grade... but doesn't translate into any kind of GPA that could make up for my 3.3 in undergrad. :-/ My undergrad program required more hours than most - music performance plus music education pre-req's, which they DO take into account, but I just want to be realistic about my chances so I don't get my hopes up for what ultimately is probably out of my reach. -

Yep, being wait-listed is not fun ... but at least you still have a chance!! I'm expecting to get a rejection letter in the mail soon from UNC Chapel Hill ... I think it must have been a reach for me anyway, despite having done my undergrad and 1st grad degree there. We're with you ... waiting as patiently as we can! Keep looking up!! :-) -
Got an email to fill out a supplemental application form... the FIRST bit of any news I have had thus far!

Mine for all of my applications still states "submitted" on application status. -
2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

WOOHOO!!! I heard something positive from Western Carolina -- I just entered it on the results page. SO glad to finally hear something. I have to submit a supplemental application (March 4th) and will hear admissions results on March 8th. (might take up to March 15th to be notified, but should happen during that time). -
If you haven't yet received official letters from school B and school C, and expect to get those at the end of February ... and you'll get notification at the beginning of March for school A, it seems to me that at this point you could just be patient and wait. You don't have an official offer from school B or C that you are obligated to accept (or whatever) just yet. That's just me ... maybe others have a different perspective for you. Congratulations on positive results from two of your schools - that's definitely great!!! :-)

I actually am feeling that same way too -- I'd be honored and happy to get accepted anywhere. The standards for SLP programs are very high, so anywhere I could even possibly dream of getting accepted would be a great honor. We are geographically limited, because we just can't move too far, plus I am out-of-field, so the fewest pre-reqs possible to get accepted has kind of placed some programs higher up on our mental list of preferences than others, but I am confident in the academics of all of the programs where I applied, and enjoyed my visits. GAH ... just hoping to hear something, anything, soon. I am reasonably sure I will get at least 2 rejections if not more... Hence the number of apps I filled out! -

I haven't heard from UNC yet - hadn't been able to get on this page before now. I also work in an area where my cell phone is out of range of any cell towers, so they'd likely leave a voicemail, which I don't have yet. Even though I did my undergrad (out of field) and first master's degree at UNC Chapel Hill ... the SLP program is probably a reach for my stats ... realistically not holding my breath but it would be cool to be accepted there for a third degree program! Best of luck to KatieLiz and any others who are getting your acceptances!! Congratulations!!!!! -
Choosing an area of Focus
queenleblanc replied to queenleblanc's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I will pipe in, since I asked originally. I am hoping to do research and focus on TBI, and more specifically the effects of dementia. I am out of field and still feel very lost- I have only taken the basic pre reqs this far, so my hope is to hone in on this during my masters program, and lead that into a PhD. I hope to also learn more about vocal therapy, and my experience as a music teacher will come in handy. So, I kind of have an idea... but still need to learn a lot more before I hit the point of establishing my thesis topic (which I hope to do!). -

No notification from UNC for me either -- not on application status online either, still says "submitted." I'm thinking that the early notifications are something special, maybe a scholarship or assistantship. I agree with the analysis on last year's results having one person post results about a week before everyone else. Holding on to hope.... for now!!!! -
Okay ... more discussion! Several MA/MS programs give you an option to choose electives or even designate an area of focus - some even have additional certifications as options (bilingual, etc.). If you are considering this option, or have already chosen an area of focus.... what are you choosing, and why?

Interview for an MA with teaching certification
queenleblanc replied to H_V_'s topic in Interviews and Visits
I did a MAT (which gave me my initial license in music ed) a few years ago, and here were some questions I was asked: What inspires you to be a teacher? (the "why are you here" question) What experiences have you had that make you believe that this will be a successful educational program / degree for you? What age group / population do you want to teach (usually several placements available because it may be a K-12 license, but you will want to concentrate on one age group; if unsure, then tell them you are unsure, they will respect that). Why THIS university? (the "fit" question) I hope those can get you started. The interviewers will have scanned through your CV/resume, but you will want to use this opportunity to point out or remind them of details on there that make you unique, and things that you can bring to the university. Also consider what you can get out of the university - look at their philosophy statements, if you can find them, mission statement, etc... and draw on those. -

At the UNC info session, they mentioned that scholarships from the univ were very few, but available and VERY competitive (you compete against Chem, Biochem, physics... any other master's program at the university). They suggested at LEAST a GPA of 3.8 for even trying to get the scholarship, and in the past there were only one or maybe 2 winners from SLP in the whole university. So, I wouldn't be surprised if the results posting with the 3.99 GPA is the scholarship recipient. They had to have their app's in by December 11th to be eligible for that. I already called my voicemail from school on my (quick) lunch break - no messages yet! -

Heart. In. Throat. Can't WAIT to hear from someone...!!! it would be great to get that call from UNC!!!! -
If you aren't 100% sure if you would accept an offer of admission, I would at least go and find out as much as possible to make that decision. There may be funding incentives or something else you can't really see until you go, something intangible or something not on the school's website, I think it is worth it, especially with expenses paid.

Sad day today ... got a "big" envelope in the mailbox ... and it was junk mail about car insurance. So disappointed!!! It's going to be another month or so, but I am wishfully trying to will that magical letter to enter my mailbox...

I thought the whole point of an application deadline was so that the adcomm could start the process of going through the apps to figure out which folks will be accepted, etc. If they don't plan to meet until the middle of March.... then WHY did we have to turn in apps by February 1st? Waiting a month and a half to even meet is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. The whole notion of "if your app isn't complete by the deadline, it isn't considered" must not really be true if they have to have the month and a half buffer to put together the apps for the adcomm. :-( So disappointed that the adcomm isn't even going to meet until then, or even later. :-/

My app at South Carolina (different program) says "Decision pending." I already heard from the grad coordinator that they are preparing apps for the adcomm. If yours says "Recommended," then either your app has been sent to the adcomm, or it's been recommended for admission to the graduate school, who will then issue the final decision. Either way... don't try to assume too much. They will surely give you official information soon! :-)

Buying vs. Renting during Grad School
queenleblanc replied to emorygrad87's topic in Officially Grads
I bought a condo when I moved to my first teaching job, thinking I'd do small renovations and sell the condo in 5 or so years (about the time of a PhD program) ... and it is STILL on the market. Honestly, the money savings might look attractive, but consider the carrying costs when the time comes to sell it. Get some good advice from multiple real estate agents in the area where you are looking to buy and really look for homes that will have a good ROI when you want to sell, because let's face it... it's not a forever home. That's just my perspective; others may have had much better experiences with purchasing a condo for the duration of time of the doctoral program... check into the housing market history where you are looking and see what kinds of homes are hot on the resell, because that's the kind of home you will want to buy, if you buy. -

But in other good news, we recently traded our gas-guzzling SUV for a Toyota Prius and on the loan payoff on the other car, we got a refund check in the mail for overpayment... Suh-WEET! -

SO unnerving -- got a "large" envelope in the mailbox today ... and got my hopes up as I was skipping back down the driveway (literally... I know, it's weird). I got in the house and... wait for it ... it was JUNK MAIL about car insurance. :-( Talk about disappointing! I know I'm pretty much waiting until the end of February/end of March, but was secretly hoping it would be sooner... -

The explanation given was that they want candidates who KNOW that they want to go to SC, so when they get their acceptance letter, it's easy to respond. Oh, and $500 is also due with your response to the acceptance letter! From what I can tell, if we don't hear from them for the first cycle until mid-March, and I hear from the rest of my universities as they have done in the past, I should have heard something from almost everyone by the time I hear from SC. At least, that is my hope. The only catch would be if I get wait listed anywhere.
