  1. Actually when you think about it , UNC cost is more that-for me it was 85$ app+45$ sophas+43 $ ETS for GRE /toefl = 173 $!!!! And after several emails over 6 weeks, I get a 5-word email-literally , "you will hear by Tuesday"! Which was april 9th! And still nothing . This is really frustrating and only surpassed by UMD -which needs a whole other post to describe how screwed up their process is. What happened with UNC ? How come they are the no.1 public school in PH when they treat prospective students this way? I second you that you deserve a reply if not a refund as well

  6. So did anybody hear any decsions so far? I only heard from my top choice - one program Fulbright applied to and another as self-application ( only knew through the applyyourself website) I tried pushing for an earlier decision them but let's just say the response was not ideal. They do understand the long beaurocratic process they have, but they have no idea the kind of beaurocracy I have here in my country and my current job. Not to mention Visa procedure, apartment hunting , booking a flight at a reasonable price.. My dream program- to which I was accepted- starts in the Summer and with less than 10 weeks, I have no clue if I am going to make it or not so I am puzzled now whether to be ecstatic that I was accepted or continue my miserable existance in Limbo!
  7. 2 Hopkins acceptances in one week. Cannot stop pinching myself :)

  11. I agree with Cracking GRE , ETS and Barron's all are essential I am also an international student and my first language is Arabic too and I got 164 with little preparation My advice is NO cramming of Vocab - it just undoable to stuff your brain with 100s of new vocab words in context over a short period of time The new GRE is not as vocab oriented as it used to be, but still you cannot answer write and within time without strong vocab here is what I do and you can see if it works for you 1. I started with Cracking GRE hit parade and learnt the techniques it offers- especially POE for example 2. Then familiarized myself with exam like questions using the ETS OG and Magoosh 3. The different part was using my iPhone for preparation- I had so little time to prepare with masters exams , work , applications....etc so I downloaded many Apps for vocab and whenever I had a free moment, or before I go to sleep , or while stuck in traffic I would get it out and use the flash cards, some apps help you track your progress as well The best was quizlet- and I really liked the game like format matching words to their meanings But remember that memorizing words and meanings is hardly helpful since you need to practice them in context- GRE likes to use the weird meaning or the less known of well known words 4. Finally in the final 2 days I finished Barron's But the catch here is that I actually enjoyed the passages offered in the GRE format and I am a fast reader. I also loved the TOEFL reading section which I got a perfect score at. However, as you study you will find that most of the techniques used in GRE are different from those of TOEFL In my opinion Manhattan is too complicated and uses too weird vocab that is rarely seen in the exam as far as I know and I have a very negative opinion about Kaplan GRE is one of the only ways the adcoms can compare us to the American students, so the higher you get the better And despite most Unis claiming that they consider that our first language is not English when regarding the verbal score, the reality of the matter that the average GRE verbal score for accepted international students is higher than the accepted Americans so... I appologize fir the long post Best of luck
  12. I wish I could but since I am a good 14-hour flight away , I think I cannot any way I hope you enjoy it.
  13. I am also a potential fulbrighter for this year. After a lot of research I find that Fulbright is an excellent option for someone who cannot by any means secure funding otherwise. I come from a third world country and my yearly income cannot cover living expences for 2 months let alone pay 50+K in tuition and also I am interested in returing to my home country afterwards for personal and professional reasons If you can secure funding otherwise, then Fulbright's added benefit is not worth it IMO if it can prevent you from having a dream job after you finish, particularly that you say it only funds the first year I am pretty excited about the networking oppotunities that go along with being a fulbrighter and the added prestige cannot hurt either, but the bottom line is that returing for two years can make you lose touch with most of those contacts And getting a waiver, from what I hear, is getting to be impossible- the commission here says it never happened in the past 10 years- even if you get married to an American and have a child it is still very hard It is a tough decision but I think you have to weigh all the pros and cons Good luck
  14. I cannot honestly give advice since I have not had much experience yet, hence the desire to pursue a degree thhousands of miles away from home. Most programs integrate mental health in behavioral and health education degrees , I think only JH and WUSTL have degrees with strong focus in mental health as a speciality under public health and not an after thought Also LSHTM offers the global mental health program I think that mental health needs a much more interdesciplinary work and advocation since the problem are at many time highly multifactorial. (psychologist, psychaitrist, public health professional, administrators,,..) and its large issues are oven overlooked in favor of "real health problem" meaning physical ones despite how disabling and costly mental health problems can be Wish I could help more
  15. Finally heard thank god it was an acceptance. It is my first and I am super excited
  16. As if I am not in enough agony? JH finally reaches a decision and I cannot view it due to a glitch in the system and everybody already left the office. No sleep for me tonight :((

  17. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=644314 I think this link pretty much sums up the comparison between most of public health degrees And you will have more luck posing further inquiries on sdn rather than tgc Good luck I think all the programs you were accepted to are amazing opportunities , however I am biased when it comes to Hopkins and it appears that the general consensus is that the difference between degrees in Hopkins is less demarkated than other places

  19. avoid Kaplan like the plague . Manhattan for Math is way better. More Variety in difficulty and Challenge. Also the ETS OG is indispensible in terms of question types not strategy Try to Practice with time. IMHO the biggest Challenge in GRE math is time management .
  20. I agree with almost all of those points except for doing it twice .For me once was more than enough If you prepare with the mentality that this is your only Chance you Will be diligent and more productive At the Same time when taking the exam try to act as if it is another practice test . ( easier said them done I Know ) and if you feel that you can do better and Can Spare the money, time & Effort then go for it. Moreover, This test cannot be crammed for .
  21. Another one of the catches with the fulbright system is that I cannot contact any department they applied to, and I have to wait for thr IIE to have all the decisions back and decide where I would go before notifying me However, am allowed to apply to 2 programs on my own -in my case the MHS at JH and HBHE at UNC- so those I can contact like I mentioned earlier, and I also continously check the online app for the other school if I know they might post results there , but eventually it is there call ( UNC are incredibly frustrating , I emailed like 4 times in the past month with different inquiries to no avail and I tried calling once but the representative was out of the office, and they had their admitted students day on the 23rd I think so I am beginning to lose hope. I think I will need therapy after all of this is over. The only thing keeping my sanity intact currently is this forum and the SDN or contributing to my OCD
  22. Congrats on your acceptances . and Thanks for the reassurance .I know it is too soon for my neurosis to Show that much : ) But actually I have been at this process for So long . (started working on fulbright application Feb 2012 !!! ) And I finished the MPH app at JH Dec . 26th-but Was completed February 11th (due to delayed transcript evaluation) It just seems everybody have received some kind of News by Now and I still don't know which Continent I will be living in in a few Months !!
  23. I was wondering if any one has any info regarding the MHS in Mental health at Bloomberg. I noticed somebody posted an acceptance early this month. I contacted the department yesterday and the contact was very friendly and responded immediately that she will look into my status and let me know "today" -- which obviously didnot happen- and that decisions are usually made in 2 weeks after reaching the department- I submitted the app Feb 22nd and was completed in a few days I am really worried that this is a bad sign. JH is my dream school and I applied to both the FT MPH and MHS in mental health and so far I have no feedback whatsoever from them or the other four schools I applied to - mostly through Fulbright but that is a whole other story. Does that mean I am rejected ? They extended the deadline three months which propably means they don't have that much applicants or at least qualified ones! If any one has an experience with the program or applied to I would appreciate any insight. BTW my stats are uGPA: 4.0 (ECE evaluation) MBBch - intenational medical degree Grad GPA : 4.0 ( ECE ev) MPH ( only first 12 credit hours) GRE 164 (93)/161 (83)/ 5.0 (92) TOEFL: 117 Other relevant info: Teaching assistant, Lots of volunteer work - never full time- , researcher at a WHO -funded project, 2 month clerckship at GWU, CPHQ and part-time quality professional, very prestigious research grant in Italy - Child Neuropsych research, Fulbright grantee, RA at several projects but never published

  25. I even had less time to prepare and thankfully got over 160 in both-also international students and had it amidst exams. Just commit your self fully to it now. Powerprep to know where you stand. cracking gre was excellent in familiarizing yourself with exam questions typeTypes and srrategies especially in verbal (though strategies lacking a bit in Q so magoosh here is better) Then the official guide for exam like questions. Those are crucial . For tougher math questions , Manhattan is the best though harder than the test -didn't have time for it till a day or two prior. The thing is all of this is useless without time management. Exam questions are easy but it is also easy to get distracted by a hard question-usually not hard just needs a strategy you are not thinking of at the time- and lose track of time and voila you miss 4 or 5 questions you could have easily answered due to time- always remember you can mark questions and skip them to come back to later- though properly not- About being "not good in math" that is Harday a problem , GRE is about problem solving not applying rules of quantum physics or advanced calculus-English majors as well as engineers need to take it And finally make excellent use of draft paper , avoid writing over books during preparation coz on the exam day you are looking at a screen the whole time. Sorry for the long post, hope it helps and good luck
