  1. Yep, that is true. Just the aim is different. I have a Master's degree. So no need for me to go to phd if I really want to go to industry. Master degree is kinda enough
  2. From their website, they have some recent PhD graduates information. Their placement rate is not low. But most of their graduates go to industry instead of academic field. And from my current school's professor, I got to know their program is kind of strange those years. They do have lots of excellent professors, but their PhD just don't wanna go to academic field or so. I mean industry is not bad, but just not what I am looking for.
  3. Their program was pretty good, that is true. But their recent placement is really not pretty good. Still cannot believe that. It seems that there are so many applicants in this year.
  4. Some professors are pretty excellent, for example, Tony Cai. But I don't think their program is comparable with Chicago's stat.
  5. I see. I received that kind of email several weeks ago. I just have a bad feeling about their program.... I still clearly remember that the admission coordinator told me to not submit any other materials that they don't require, even CV.....
  6. Upenn is best for industry track. Univ of Chicago has very strong Statistics program. As far as I know, their program is pretty hard. But lots of students have good publication with advisor during their PhD study.
  7. Actually, for theoretical Stat, Upenn sucks. If you want to do Bayesian related work, you may consider Duke actually
  8. If you want to do the theoretical statistics or probability, Univ of Chicago is the best choice.
  9. It's weird. But their program does recruit only few new PhD in each year.
  10. Anyone got phone interview request from UC Davis, Statistics PhD program?
  11. Actually, I am not US resident or green card holder neither. But sometimes, I feel it is normal to have higher standards for international students. Otherwise, that could be viewed as unfairness for domestic students.
  12. It's really hard to say. I would like to say sometimes, letters are pretty important. If a distinguished professor wants to give you letter, then you will get much better chance. Sometimes, you do get good letters from excellent professors in your own country, but the admission committees may not know those professors well. Similar reasons for other materials. Also basically, I believe the educational system may be quite different. For example, in US, for undergraduate and/ or master students, it is really hard to write papers or collaborate with professors. Sometime, you may help professors to do some simulation studies, and they pay you money, and your name won't appear on the paper, but those experiences are beneficial for their applications, even though they don't have their own papers. I hope those make sense to you.
  13. I know that OSU statistics is not such kind of program. But in US, few stat programs indeed don't provide financial aid at first. But after you finish the qualify exam, then they will provide financial aid... That sucks
  14. No, I didn't apply this program. I just saw lots of invitations reported on the result page. I don't think their program is large enough to accept so many new PhD anyway.
  15. Yep, their chair is working on Spatial statistics.
  16. Basically, If I were you, I won't go for this recruitment day. This is just like a advertising, and the admission committees should know that due to the travel cost, lots of top candidates won't come. So, it is really no harm to just decline the invitation. Personally, I don't think the recruitment day should be earlier than the admission results come out.... I know that for some programs, they would like to invite you for a department visiting, and it's more like an interview. So, they usually pay your tickets and hotel, even shuttle services from airport to hotel, etc.
  17. Thanks man. Maybe I should email the coordinator, lol. Especially for the recruitment day, it will be a whole day.....
  18. Thanks, man! I need buy some non-white shirt. LOL
  19. It seems that they sent out many invitations in this year
  20. What to wear to on-campus interview? May I wear jeans with a polo shirt??? How about department recruitment day? Is there anything difference regarding the attire?

  22. it is highly possible that you can get into UChicago Master program.
  23. I know PSU is not a good choice. Their admission rate is extremely low... I think your background is not bad, the reason I say that is that CS+STAT background is a very very good combination. A lot of stat department are starting their machine learning team by hiring more professors who works on that. I know UWashington is currently constructing their "machine learning" team. I use quota is because sometimes, they hire professors who is not really working on classical machine learning, but related to that field. Also, standford is also a good choice actually. You should try it. CMU is a popular one, and a great one.
  24. Well, I think that depends on what program that you will apply for. For example, if you want to apply stat phd program, then you'd better explain the B- of real analysis and calculus. I think B+ is fine if you are in a top university.
  25. Hey everyone, I am currently a master student in a top ranked stat program. Basically, I have some research experiences, but I don't know whether they are useful or not. Actually, I even don't know whether should I apply biostat or stat phd program, since my research experience is also related to biostat I did simulation studies for two professors, both two are related to time series. (stat) I also have a paper preparing to submit soon which is related to longitudinal GLMs. (related to biostat, longitudinal ) So if just judge from my research experience, is it more suitable for me to apply biostat or stat? I don;t have any college level bio knowledge....., and I am an international student.
