  1. I agree that the timing may have just been fortuitous. Maybe the prof just happened to set aside that afternoon to look at applications. I would do your best on the interview and meanwhile gather information about the school/program from other sources.
  2. Go to University B because they are offering $1000. That will get you to the U.S. Ask if Uni A will let you come a different day and use their $500 to buy a round trip ticket from Uni B's city to theirs.
  3. It depends on the type of fit, I think. If it is a really good school but working with that person will make you want to quit grad school, you should reconsider it. I personally considered fit to be more important, but I will be going into an applied discipline, not academia.
  4. Prospies are here! <3

      Taeyers

Ours were last week. It was a little too exciting! I got no work done for a day and a half. Now I'm going through a repeat of the waiting period from last year, except this year I'm hoping my favorite recruits will get offers.

  5. Oh you can stay a second night - I'm just saying don't take the 6am flight! You can take the 3pm and just communicate to your person that you are independent and don't need them to babysit you.
  6. Oh don't apologize! I was just curious. And congrats!
  7. Why'd you decline? Just curious... And usually if you decline they don't fill your spot with someone else. At least in my program we invite everyone we're interested in all at once. It just means that the people who attended would have slightly better odds of being accepted.
  8. Definitely do the same day! I would murder someone who made me get up at 3am to take them to the airport! That being said, some stay the night after... but the just one night preferable.
  9. I just gave advice to someone else on this topic, and yours is even more clear-cut! I think jeans (no holes or anything) with a nice sweater and some decent shoes is perfectly acceptable. You definitely don't want to be too formal. Once you're in grad school there's a good chance your profs will drink beer and watch football with you, so they're used to scruffy grad students.
  10. It depends. Some programs will let you make the switch, others won't. Why did you not apply to PhD directly? I've noticed that credits don't always transfer well, especially from one institution to another. If you'll be paying for EdS out of pocket you might as well wait another year and apply for a PhD with funding.
  11. I had to ask sometimes. If a school won't pay for you then they should be willing to put you in contact with a student. Ask whomever sent you the interview invitation.
  12. You should go! My top choice last year quickly changed after a visit to their program, and my last choice became my first! Go and figure things out for yourself!
  13. I think that a lot of it translates, because half of it is about how you present yourself. You need to have poise, speak articulately and know what you want to get across (and then actually get it across). Several of my grad school interviews also had the more typical questions you would find in a job interview: strengths and weaknesses, etc. So practice, practice, practice. Practice with your mom, with your friends. If you're still in undergrad visit your career center and practice there. It will help immensely Good luck!
  14. Everyone's watching the Superbowl and I'm just sitting here, snowed in, doing my taxes...

  15. Hm, I wonder if you are coming to our dinner! Is it tomorrow? Casual (or at least more casual than the interview) should be fine. I mean, no ripped pants or flip-flops or anything, but a sweater with some jeans should be fine. Just dress weather-appropriate!
  16. Tip to interviewers: if you are being hosted by a grad student, please RESPOND to them when they contact you. It's just good manners.

  17. I would just go unless you already have a great job lined up. Yes, you may need more experience later, but why don't you just cross that bridge when (or if) you come to it? Plus the connections you make in grad school could help your job prospects. You can also get experience during your degree even if it's just volunteering.

    Wait List???

Possibly a wait-list, but most likely they will first draw from the "official" wait-list (people who interviewed and did not make the cut) then interview more people if they need to.
  19. Prof wrote 1/3 of our readings (articles + books) assigned this semester...

  20. Started classes this week after 5 weeks off and now a family member is dying. The universe's timing sucks. :(

Very sorry to hear.. Hope you are able to spend some time with that person and achieve what you'd like this semester as well. Sending good thoughts.

i'm so sorry...sending you prayers, positive vibes, and lots of love!<3

  21. Yup, I wore the same thing (minus the heels) last year. Felt a bit awkward next to everyone in the suits, but I was fine.
  22. Saw about 7 posts on the same topic today ("OMG school wants a decision in x amount of days, what do I do?!??!") doesn't anyone use the search function?

I thought it would be interesting for others to know that this cycle a lot of schools are ignoring the CGS resolution and not "playing nice," which is creating some stressful situations for us. For me, grad cafe is as good a place as any to vent :)

    2. GeoDUDE!

      GeoDUDE!

if they are ignoring CGS, they probably arent a good program.

  23. I should also add that if you want to work as a school psych in a school you can do so with a PhD and you might even be paid more. But you may also be seen as overqualified (or too expensive).
  24. It really depends on your career goals! If you want to work in research (school district, university professor) a PhD is the way to go! Or if you want to have your own practice or work in a hospital. Otherwise an EdS pretty much qualifies you for any other job.
  25. Talk to your POI/supervisor and see what they say! Many schools have family or compassion leave.
