Congrats to all the Northwestern acceptances!
-
Oh, absolutely. I just thought it was interesting that a chunk of WL's were posted since that's never happened before. And I'm glad they didn't send out the top applicant letter this year since that resulted in a lot of disappointment.
-
I'm such a Gradcafe SLP forum uber-nerd (obviously) that I was stoked to see your WL to SDSU.
-
So it looks like there was another Boulder WL posted, bringing the total to six. I don't think any previous Boulder results included that many WL's. I wonder if the school has changed their admissions process this year, not that I have any insight into it, haha. I checked my app and still no word. I should probably stop obsessing over this...until next week.
-
Oh, I have no doubt you made the right choice for your goals and situation. It's just nice to be wooed.
-
kcald, I would say that's a lot to juggle, but it looks like you've done it before, and I know you will ace those classes! And wow--what an offer from Western! I know you're going to ECU, but that's something to be proud of.

I do know that reputation matters on the international level, sometimes quite a bit more than it does in the States. I'm usually in favor of taking funding over not, but in your position and considering the great expense of either school with or without funding, my inclination is to pick the more established "name brand" program. The UNESCO/internship piece is interesting, though--can you find out what Penn GSE alumni are doing now on an international level? Perhaps if you post this in the Education subforum, you'll get more input.
-
Wow, you have a lot of varied and interesting experience under your belt. Considering your academic background, you're right that you probably don't need more classes. (Did you study Human Dev at CSU? I checked out their master's program last year and almost considered applying this year!) When do you think you'll hear from Wyoming?
-
If you don't receive an acceptance, is there any way you can take post-bacc classes to boost your GPA? Your GRE scores are fantastic, and so is your major GPA. It would be such a shame for your GPA to hold you back.
-
Nope. I'm waiting on pins and needles.

NYU and NYC/NJ area schools
midnight replied to clydeyo12's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm rooting for you! It's crazy how many schools you're still waiting to hear from. -
Don't give up hope yet. It seems neither rejections nor acceptances have been sent yet (if the results board is accurate).
-
I'm sorry, mystique.
-
Congrats anyway! I hope you hear from your other programs very soon so you can make a decision.

Colorado Boulder Applicants
midnight replied to CassieKay's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm going to go with Monday (though business hours don't seem to matter much as my notification email from UVA was sent at 9 p.m.!). -
I'm so glad you got into UWM--wasn't that ideal if Madison didn't work out? All of us have to take statistics if we haven't already. I need to find out if I can take it at a community college over the summer.

Colorado Boulder Applicants

I haven't heard anything either! I see only waitlists on the results board. -
It's definitely possible to improve that much, especially since you were really rusty your first try and didn't review much. I would recommend against a GRE prep class even if it were feasible; they're overpriced and only marginally helpful. Manhattan is supposedly great for Q practice, so you're mostly set. I see you've already used one Barron's book, but I really like and highly recommend another one called Barron's Six Practice Tests (the tests are very similar to the real GRE in content and difficulty--and it's cheap!). Oh, and Magoosh has some great free PDFs on their site.

UWashington, UC Berkeley, or Harvard Biostats?
midnight replied to sherby77's topic in Decisions, Decisions
As a person who likely has no business offering an opinion but will anyway, I say go with Berkeley and take the funding. Though I have to ask, will attending UW or Harvard allow you specific/unique/desirable opportunities or more money down the road? (Also, what are Berkeley, Harvard, and UW MS alumni doing now? Will you be able to work with people who complement your studies and research at each school? Do the schools have comparable resources? What is likely the best fit for you?) But given an incomplete picture, I say take the money and relish in your success. -
Would a post-bacc program be an option to show that you can thrive in a program? I found these two by googling: http://distance.appstate.edu/graduate-programs/52 http://www.scs.northwestern.edu/program-areas/post-baccalaureate/pregraduate-study/index.php Your GRE scores are phenomenal, and you sound eager to continue with sociology. I hope you're able to find schools that can overlook a low GPA.

SLP 2013 CALIFORNIA Admissions!!
midnight replied to jackiet15's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Never mind. I misread something. -
Well, that was $500 in application fees well spent... not.
midnight replied to groverj3's topic in Waiting it Out
grover, although the GRE is only one component of your app, I really think you should study and practice as much as humanly possible and retake. Given your field and some of your lower grades, you should really be aiming for 160+ (possibly higher) on the quant section. I wouldn't be surprised if it hindered you, at least somewhat. It seems like a lot of life sciences applicants have astoundingly high verbal and AW scores, too--which don't guarantee acceptances, of course, but they certainly don't hurt. Good luck! -
How many schools should you apply to?
midnight replied to toriec's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
toriec: If you do decide to apply to US schools, I recommend against California and Florida public schools. Their programs are extremely competitive and often have a lot of internal applicants (and apparently the budget is a huge problem in California, too), so even very qualified applicants are often flat-out rejected, not even waitlisted. There are similar issues with some of the NY (SUNY) schools, too. I mention this because some of the California State University schools aren't ranked so high and appear to be a safer bet, but in reality they're not. Since you currently live in BC, you might be interested in the University of Oregon, Portland State, and the University of Washington in Seattle (although PSU and UW are highly competitive). There are pitfalls to the process that many people don't know about until they experience them firsthand or read about them here, so I just thought I'd share. -
Just for clarification, I think SLP1990 is referring to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, not Northern Colorado at Greeley.

I'm out of upvotes, but CONGRATS, jeffmooo!
