SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
midnight replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
This ASHA page has some PDFs that detail school-based and healthcare-based SLP salaries: http://www.asha.org/careers/professions/slp.htm And I definitely understand anyone who's worried about incurring debt, especially an exorbitant amount. I'm just glad that job placement rates are able to temper some of my own worries because school's stressful enough as it is! -
SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

Yeah, and when it comes to loan debt for me, I think the point you made about SLP salary (and related high job placement) is really important. I would be far more stressed about the financial side of this process if the job outlook weren't so strong. -
I'll edit my post with your updated list. I really hope this list will be helpful. It's overwhelming for someone to figure all of this out on her own.

(I hope it's OK to post this here; if not, I will delete it.) I have a decent amount of books that I collected last year when I was studying (or was supposed to studying) for the GRE. If you're in the Richmond, VA, area, PM me and I will gladly give them to you for free. There are probably eight books from several prep companies, including an official Kaplan class.

katie-bird, I credited you and pasted this list in the SLP out-of-field thread. Thanks for compiling it!

I didn't pay for Magoosh, but I found all of their free materials (PDFs, videos on Youtube) to be incredibly helpful. The PDFs are just quick and easy conceptual breakdowns that I looked over for a couple of weeks before the test. (My score improved seven points between my first and second attempts, albeit it was abysmally low the first time.) Some people here have previously said that Magoosh has a rather convoluted method for its in-depth quant prep. Manhattan seems to be where it's at for the best quant review.

Yeah, I should have said that I don't know how helpful it is to take classes again, and that's an expensive option. I just wonder if some programs might see it as taking initiative, but it's hard to know what schools value and what they don't. I hope you get some acceptances and hear good news from the OU and Miami waitlists!

Colorado Boulder Applicants
midnight replied to CassieKay's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Congrats to you, SDBear! You have some fantastic choices. I'm going on April 5, but some schools are receptive to scheduling visits on other days. I hope you get a chance to do so. Oh, and CassieKay, miscarthur: Did you hear anything? -
You still have a lot of schools to hear from, so don't lose hope yet! Since your comm dis GPA is a little low, you may want to retake the GRE to balance your app a bit. Also, is it possible for you to retake any comm dis classes to boost your GPA? If SLP doesn't work out for you, have you considered pursuing special education? One of the schools in my state (Virginia Commonwealth University) will essentially pay for a master's degree in preschool special ed; many students focus on autism. Good luck!

It seems like many of the SLP waitlists are active, at least gauging from the results page info.
-
I hope you get some good financial news soon!
-
I'm sorry if Columbia isn't feasible, but you have some wonderful options. Is MGH your second choice?

That is phenomenal, rcacemek! You've definitely motivated me to take an intensive Spanish class I was considering for the summer. -

Great info, kcald! (I'm out of upvotes.) -
I don't think it's too late to change your mind at all, especially if you're considering something more specialized like pediatric dysphagia.

Awesome list, katieliz! More recommendations: A Mind of My Own: Memoir of Recovery from Aphasia by Harrianne Mills The Man Who Lost His Language: A Case of Aphasia by Sheila Hale Where Is the Mango Princess? A Journey Back from Brain Injury by Cathy Crimmins The Way I See It by Temple Grandin (She has written many books on living with autism.)

Should I introduce myself to you as Midnight if I'm able to attend open house? I need to keep my anonymity.

Someone else expressed interest in schools that offer three-year or leveling tracks, so it might be nice to have a list here for easy reference (I'm not sure if there's a simple way to search for these programs on ASHA EdFind?). Here are some schools that accept out-of-field students and offer integrated leveling years (i.e., these schools do not make students reapply after completing pre-requisite coursework): Arizona: University of Arizona Colorado: University of Colorado, Boulder Illinois: Northwestern University SIU, Carbondale Indiana: IU, Bloomington Iowa: University of Iowa Kentucky: University of Kentucky University of Louisville Missouri: University of Central Missouri New York: New York Medical College New York University Teachers College, Columbia University North Carolina: Appalachian State University Western Carolina University Tennessee: Vanderbilt University Virginia: James Madison University (note: JMU accepts very, very few out-of-field students each year) Radford University University of Virginia Here are some schools with post-bacc options (i.e., students do have to reapply after completing pre-requisite courses): Washington: University of Washington, Seattle Washington, D.C.: George Washington University Wisconsin: University of Wisconsin, Madison Schools that require minimal prerequisites prior to matriculation: Massachusetts: Boston University Emerson College MGH If you know of other programs (including online leveling programs), please feel free to add them here!

That is strange--and now that I think about it, if accepted in-field applicants had been notified, I'm sure there would have been a little more activity on the results board.
-
Both my parents AND my husband think that. Thank god for GC where everyone understands how competitive grad school is.

I was my mother-in-law's caretaker last summer, and she has been suffering from Alzheimer's-related aphasia for about five years. Being with her and seeing her struggle with language made me want to help people with similar issues. However, I have a professional background in ESL and have worked with children for several years. I'd at least like to become involved with El Grupo in some way if possible. -

Of course this is all dependent on what clicks for me in practice, but in theory I want to study neurogenic disorders and possibly work with stroke victims and geriatric populations. However, now that I know I'm in at CU, I'm definitely interested in getting involved with El Grupo de Familias and bilingual language development as well.
