  1. There is so much wrong with that person's view of the GRE that I don't even know where to begin. And mystique, are you turning down NYU?
  2. I know; I love the sentiment of the "all" result posting, but it's not actually helpful, especially since people do specific term searches using school names. And if I see the word "political" over there one more time, I'm going to...well, do nothing but scratch my head because I'm not quite sure what that really means in the context of SLP admissions.
  3. I'd go with #2: better funding, better fit, cheaper COL, good reputation.
  4. I think focusing on your fit and future with a program may be a better tack than underlining the fact that pre-med didn't work out for you. You can briefly discuss pre-med and how it led to your current focus, but I think that overall it's best to talk about all the great things you've learned and done in your current field, the research you've participated in and are interested in pursuing in the future, particular professors and specifics of the program that show you've done your homework, etc. I think that it's most important for an SOP to be cogent and well written, but it doesn't have to include an elaborate back story so much as it has to highlight your talents and assets.
  5. I'm going to mark all of the debate posts on the results board as spam. If people want to discuss the ins and outs of admissions decisions, there are literally dozens of appropriate places for them to do it, and the results board is not one of them.
  6. What are alumni from the Calgary program doing now?
  7. I'm so sorry that happened to you, Bionica! It's a grad school admissions nightmare. Don't kick yourself over not following up. The school really screwed up, and there's no way you could have predicted that.
  8. gnome (great name btw), all you can do is make your application as strong as possible and go for it. It sounds like you're doing everything you can to strengthen your app. I think you'll need an extremely competitive GRE score to balance your GPA (as far as the GRE can balance four years of work), but a memorable, compelling SOP and dazzling LORs can go a very long way, too. How many programs are you considering? Best of luck!
  9. University of Wyoming is another one (it's been around for 25 years!): http://www.uwyo.edu/comdis/distance-study/
  10. It is really interesting! Perhaps if you decide not to pursue bio further, the bio classes you've already taken can fulfill the bio needed for a neuro minor, but it all depends on your school's requirements, of course.
  11. ChildPsych, if you do drop your bio minor, would you be interested in a minor like neuroscience? The neuro minor at my alma mater integrated both psychology and biology coursework.
  12. Three years ago shouldn't be an issue at all, and professors tend to remember strong students. It helps if you can provide them with samples of your work from their classes. I requested LORs from professors that I had six years ago with no problem; they seemed more than happy to help me. I scanned a few papers and tests for them, reminded them of a departmental award that I received, and asked if they wanted to see my SOP and CV.
  13. I would be torn between Vandy and Chapel Hill, too. And I do think you have a very good shot at whatever program you're waiting for, so that could throw another wrench in the works. Good luck with your final decision; I don't think you can go wrong with any of your schools. I'm pretty set on Boulder. I'm flying out next week for their open house, and if all goes well, I'll be sending them my confirmation!
  14. Wow, that is cutting it close! Aside from the wild card you're waiting for, which school are you leaning toward?
  15. I'd definitely say NO to Duke and would choose either WUSTL or Madison based on the info you provided. Congrats on your great offers!
  16. Right, out of all of the non-reading comprehension questions, I only missed one, and I don't think it was due to a vocabulary issue. If Manhattan's difficult words aren't difficult for you, you're fine! Really. And you'll easily be able to use process of elimination and deductive reasoning if you run across something strange.
  17. OMG, ded. My sister-in-law is a proud alum of Conn Coll, though the other NESCAC schools would taunt the Camels by chanting "safety school" at hockey games.
  18. I'd definitely email them to check on that; it will help to include the course catalog description and possibly even the class syllabus.
  19. James Madison: http://www.csd.jmu.edu/dlve-slp/
  20. AWESOME! It sounds like a perfect program for you.
  21. B if you do the joint Ph.D.
  22. This may be an unpopular opinion here, but I personally think School Y makes more sense for you from an international perspective. Also, I assume that since School Y accepted you, they believe in your ability to pursue the work you're interested in and believe that they can facilitate your studies on some level as well. Fit is not taken lightly in graduate admissions. However, I think you will be more than fine whichever school you choose. They both sound like great opportunities.
  23. It might help if you can get the syllabus from that course just in case you need to show someone that the content was mostly stats. I really doubt it. I love Coursera, but their courses are not for credit, even if you receive a certificate of completion. I assume these pre-reqs need to be fulfilled through accredited institutions. ETA: I'm personally not comfortable taking non-credit courses to meet these requirements even if I haven't received any concrete information that they need to be for credit.
  24. I regret not starting this process three or four years ago. (I graduated in 2008.) Also I regret not taking more science and math courses as an undergrad as well as not minoring in Spanish. I took many literature and art history classes out of true love and enthusiasm, but it would've been wiser to pick more practical electives since I knew I might choose a different path.
