Will you be attending? Why/why not? On another note, the grad director has sent me 3 emails asking about my decision. Anyone else gotten these?

If you likes Bayesian, OSU is definitely the place to go.

So in your opinion OSU is more well known for stats that UIUC? In the rankings OSU is at ~27, and UIUC is at ~33, so I suppose the rankings corroborate this view. I've looked at the placement of each program, but they seem to be fairly similar (hard to tell because UIUC has more placement data than OSU does). Whod've thought this would be such a tough decision!

I too got an offer from OSU. Based on how you're describing each school, it seems like Duke would be the best for you!

I guess to put that number in perspective, at UIUC I met with 6/10 faculty in one-on-one meetings for ~30 minutes each. Is OSU more highly regarded than UIUC? I thought that UIUC was thought of as more prestigious than OSU. It is certainly ranked higher as an overall institution.

Hey erb8884, I went to the graduate information day. I'll be honest - I was not so impressed, mostly because I felt like the faculty presence was severely lacking (only about 7 professors came out of ~22 in the department). Does anyone know how these two departments are viewed? I would imagine roughly similarly, but does any ideas?

Hey guys, What are you opinions on UIUC vs OSU for a Statistics PhD? I know that the answer may be a bit dependent on my own interests, however, I don't want to (at least initially) skew your opinions. Which would you attend and why?

Hey guys, It's nearly March and I've still yet to heave from University of Virginia or Northwestern. I've checked my app pages and it still says no decision for both of them. Has any one else heard anything?

I can't speak for the masters program, but I already know that most (if not all) of the PhD decisions have already gone out. In fact, the "info" day was just last week. However, I think it was for PhD students, and not masters students. What does your app center say?

How are these "tiers" determined? I find it hard to believe that many of these departments would be considered third or fourth tier. I think that anything in the top 10 would be tier 1, 10 to ~25 tier 2, ~25 to 35 tier 3, 35 to 50 tier 4.

Hey all, I just (2 minutes ago) received an admit from Illinois with funding. Very very excited! If you've applied you should check your e-mail or your app status.

I e-mailed the grad director. He said they had "made decisions in both directions" and that they had seen my file but did not have any word on my application. I am a little upset I did not get a first round decision, but at least I have not been rejected.

Did you app center update? Mine still says "No decision"

I've seen a few Rutgers admissions on the results search. I have yet to hear anything. My app center still says "no decision". Has anyone else heard anything?

That's what I'm hoping, but I'm still weary. A nomination is by no means a guarantee of receiving the fellowship. My thought are similar to yours though. Each department only has a certain number of new applicants they can nominate, and I figure if I do not receive a fellowship, I should likely receive a ta ship or something since I was a "top" enough applicant to be nominated for a fellowship.

I just received an e-mail telling me I was nominated for the fellowship competition. This is odd though, since my GPA is below the requirement. (3.56, req is 3.6). The scary thing about the e-mail is that it said if I am not selected for the fellowship competition then I will be put in the pool for "possible" TA funding. Looks like funding at OSU isn't so secure after all.

Can you say how delayed they were?

Hey guys, I was accepted to Ohio State's Statistics PhD program, and I am wondering about funding. So far, I have not heard anything. A check on the website has also not revealed anything about if all PhD students get funding. I am wondering, how common is it for students admitted to a PhD program to not get funding? I was thinking it would be very uncommon and unexpected, especially at such a well funded school like OSU. Thanks
